Why no 3rd person?

I understand the whole immersion factor playing from the cockpit, but why is there no 3rd person view option?

I doubt it's because of a design flaw, or the inability to provide a playable 3rd person perspective(seeing as there is an option to view your ship from that angle while in flight). I just don't understand why I can't play in 3rd person. Other than it would make fighting and landing a lot easier. We wouldn't want that, now would we...:p

The idea was to make Elite a dog fighting style game as the main focus for combat. This was the design intent for the game. It is a feature and not a bug so to speak. Using a 3rd person view could allow people unfair advantages. However the external camera was added for people who want to see their ships and take pics.

You answered your own question regards advantages, not to mention a general reworking of how the game currently works.
I'll not even mention the backlash you'll get from Elite veterans...it'd be messy.

So many hostile responses on this forum. I get it. You're extremely passionate about your game, but chill out.

Every flight sim I've ever played used 1st and 3rd person perspectives. Being able to view your entire ship does have it's advantages, but so does flying from the cockpit. I would prefer 3rd person if I had the choice, unless I was in VR.

Don't take it too much to heart, only one of them was being a putz.

Against whom? The other players with the same view option or the NPCs with complete situation awareness?

Because third person view in Elite would be stupid.
No it would not.
3rd person view is already there.
Thus your reply is VERY stupid. [yesnod]

I would very much like to be able to manoeuvre my ships in 3rd person.
A great advantage when taking pictures and such.
If this gives an advantage in combat as well, we can just have it as it is in camera mood - we pop right into cockpit, once hostilities commence.

A third person view would probably be really helpful to people struggling with the more agile AI. There have been many many times when a ship is doing the pitch battle thing to me and I can't see it to gauge where my throttle should be. I don't have an Occulus or Track IR and trying to fight while also using mouse look is untenable... an external view would help immensely in tracking.

I for one am very glad this game/sim does not have a viable 3rd person combat view. [up]

It's all about being the pilot of your spaceships. A 3rd person view is not needed and would ruin much of the appeal of playing for many of us, though it's nice they include the drone view for basking shots. ;)

This isn't other sims nor other games.

If there was an external camera.. you could always you know.. not use it. I just don't understand these kinds of arguments. It shouldn't be in the game cause it wouldn't appeal to some players. If it's optional they wouldn't have to use the thing and the people who do like it would be happy.

Because it easily has the potential of creating unfair advantages and a disparity between players. There is no lesser of two options if there is only one option.

Not including it is an easy win for the game for me. I very much prefer that, and it's one of the many reasons I choose to play this game instead of others out there.

But you're fine with VR and TrackIR which can easily create an unfair advantage and disparity between players?

We have it and its called debug cam. "anti sim" arguments fells flat on the face - every simulator have 3p view DCS, Falcon 4.0, Flanker 2.0, Xplane, Prepare, Orbiter, name one with out it :)
Also it would give you zero advantage - you have that ball in the middle of the screen, its called radar and and it can see everything 360.

Why it isn't present has already been stated. I'm just hopping in to leave my 2c on the for/against argument such as it is. Personally I would love to have a 3rd person camera, chase style like any number of flight games. Now.. I understand this is a pseudo-sim game. To be fair on that point though.. afaik most of the most serious simulation flight games have a chase camera. There is quite a few I haven't played though. It's entirely possible the ones that do is the exception.. I've stated before that I prefer to have the option of a chase cam. Do I think it would be neat to have in Elite? Yup. Would I use it? Often. In combat? *shrug* Perhaps. Is it needed or something I am unhappy about having? Naw. Apparently Fdev and/or the DDF peeps decided it would be against the nature of the game. I can accept that. If it gets added (it wont) my response will be "oh sweet" if it doesn't I'll continue playing as normal. :)
