Why play online?

Why should a new player play online?

Give me just ONE good reason.

As i see it, play it solo to you have the best ship in hand filled
with the best weapon. Grab yourself some moonth on the game and
get experience. Then you can go online.

If you plan on doing this, be sure that you get a whole lot of money on top of your "best ship with best weapons" ;)
You will lose a lot of those expensive ships when you get involved in PvP the first weeks.

It's more fun and feels less static than playing solo. Also, the more people who test the multiplayer aspects the better it is for the development of the game.

Or they'll lose an expensive ship to an npc sidewinder with a railgun.

There is this continuing misconception about play modes as it currently stands. No matter which play mode you select right now you are playing online. There is no offline mode currently and unlikely to be for some time (speculation on my part - still lots of online stuff to deploy and fix).

There is no real reason for a brand new player to enter open play straight away other than the desire to meet, greet and/or shoot other players. Everything you can do in open play you can also do in solo or private groups. The only difference is if you see other players and which players you get to meet, greet and/or shoot so the best thing for newbies is indeed to take a while in solo to get the feel of things then join open play.

because solo and all group are two completely different games, first flying coop and having fun, second player opponents are much tougher than npc, so i have similar question to you, give me one good reason to play solo?
i don't play solo games anymore - no fun in that at all, and i never liked to feel like a god and all solo games are god mode games.

we need challenges to evolve or we will get bored, but that depends on can you get over frustration or no. so for me solo mode is non existent :)

Ok, i am still struggling to land or navigate and alot of other things. So i am not even close to think about pvp. I am not interesting in pvp, just farm credit and build up my credits. For now at least. But after reading this forum and player who stalks other just to kill theme, i choice to play solo. I am not going to let that happen to me.

Online is where the emergent gameplay will be. Some people don't like dying and I get that, but the challenge of existing in an "alive" universe is compelling.

I died yesterday on my first day as a type 6 transporter came in quickly behind me and wrecked me (and itself) when it collided with the starport entrance, lesson learned - always check my scanner before docking, there will be other experiences I am sure.

On the subject of other players being abusive - comms are fairly limited in Elite Dangerous, I don't think it will be much of a problem.

I find it more fun & challenging with other players. It's not such a big difference at the moment with much of the game still to come though.

Play Solo if you want though. No one really needs to convince you, there will be plenty of people playing online with others. :)

Good point

Thought the same as you a while ago, then to test something out I played in open. Nothing bad has really happened to me but I expect it to at any moment, I and I don't expect it to be good.

The extra level of excitement makes it a completely different experience in such a great way. I like to read the scare stories on here just to help the fear.

That reminds me it is Elite Dangerous (but not too dangerous, not yet anyway).

Give it a go, if it's not for you try a combination of both, it's your game, it's about you. Hope to see you out there. I'll be the one shooting "greetings Commander" through quick comm's.

It would be fun if everyone would try to make the game immersive and more realistic. But some people just like to goof around, and I rather will not be the butt of their joke. I prefer single player all the way, in any game.

See here for the main reason:

I just find it wildly unpleasant.
Different folks, different strokes... nobody will be required to play online if she/he so chooses.

...on a personal note: Could people please stop screaming misogyny whenever some girl/women is trolled online... I've done head enough if it over the last couple of weeks.

Behavior like that is simply rude and childish trolling, and is mostly perpetrated by children/teens that simply don't care about the sensibilities of others... it's NOT misogyny.

At the moment I currently play Solo mode and occasionally multi-player. The trouble with Multi is that it doesn't last long before it crashes, so it kinda puts me of at the mo.

Also I don't feel experienced enough to go it multi-player as one PvP and I think I will be Dead!

I kinda like trading and exploring anyway rather than PvP. I hope to join a PvE group, or form one, when ED is released.

I am glad that you can play online solo as I hope FD will put in things now and again as single events, rather like they do in WOW, so I will still be able to experience them - this will also help the universe seem 'real'.

Cheers,

Simon

Solo is an absolute valid playstyle.
I'm more of a solo player too, but i stayed in MP most of the time since i already felt comfortable with the game from premium beta.
I changed my mind and now plan to play MP with very little exeptions (sometimes i just don't want to see anybody).

MP is not full of random killing psychos. They exist but i have yet to meet one (and i stayed at Freeport for two weeks).
