Why play online?

AFAIK you can play iron man in a group or solo online. Traditional Iron Man games (like Nethack) are solo games.

hrhr.."Hack" was solo... "nethack" was MP ;)
and this is VERY traditional :)

Edit: i have to correct myself. nethack used to be singleplayer...but i still have a game maual here (maybe from a later version) that describes it's multiplayer mode. And i remember to have played it in a local network.

...on a personal note: Could people please stop screaming misogyny whenever some girl/women is trolled online... I've done head enough if it over the last couple of weeks.

Behavior like that is simply rude and childish trolling, and is mostly perpetrated by children/teens that simply don't care about the sensibilities of others... it's NOT misogyny.

When I call the stuff that I heard and read misogyny, you can trust me that is was just that. It should be clear that I don't want to quote it here, I'm not to keen on infractions. It was vile, extremely insulting and abusive. If you don't know what I heard and read you might want to refrain from judging my comment on the subject matter. Just saying. ;)

This is a joke, right? I have seen similar posts, people actually want to play a multiplayer game - with no other players? strange. I have heard the arguments but still cant comprehend it. multiplayer - without other players?

Elite: Dangerous is not a pure multiplayer game. Neither is GTA. Neither was the original Elite. In fact, it was a pure single player game, because it worked perfectly fine without other players. If it didn't I wouldn't be here right now.

Why should a new player play online?
Give me just ONE good reason.
T.K

I play online because it's exciting. The risk of being attacked makes your blood pump through your veins.

When you see a player attacking you, it's no longer dull AI vs semi-skilled opponent. It's highly skilled human vs highly skilled human, each thinking the other might beat them, each worriedly mashing the controls, each trying to get that last ounce of performance out of their ship to reach that so, so, sweet spot where the enemy shields pop and the hull disintegrates in a flash of light.

As i see it, play it solo to you have the best ship in hand filled
with the best weapon
. Grab yourself some moonth on the game and
get experience. Then you can go online.

That's a bit extreme don't you think? I don't think it makes sense to ignore multiplayer for that long if you actually intend to play the game multiplayer. I do, however, think that it makes sense to play the first few hours solo just to get the hang of flying and all the basics without worrying about high-risk PvP encounters.

I'm not naive, I want the best pvp players to gravitate to it. I want the soloplayonline lovers to get filtered out from it.

Thats right. And why i love it. The rewards is tenfold the frustration. The longer you live the more precious your life becomes. I for one cant wait for Ironman mode =)

My apologies, but with the atmosphere around here it's hard not to assume that every comment isn't a vehement protestation of PvP and that all people who practice or support it are Satan, sin incarnate and several historic figures that committed genocide whom if I named I would be moderated for being inflammatory/insulting even though my comment isn't directed at anyone - all rolled into one.

I see it as kind of like Dark soul's multiplayer. You can invaded randomly, there are vigilanties, people grief others and it's brutal. But it's fun! because it puts you on your toes, you never know what to expect and dying horribly is part of the game.

I hope FD takes some notes from dark souls, there are a lot of well thought out elements in there that would lend itself perfectly to this type of open world kinda-pvp kinda-not game. Particularly it's self policing strategies.

I find kinda amusing that some online players seem to feel personally insulted just because some others don't share their interest in multiplayer. No one forces you to play offline. Play multiplayer if you want to. But just the same let us play offline if we want to. ;)

Fun?

But yeah - it depends on my activities - when I'm just trading in a Lakon type VI, I do it solo online - less lag, connection issues and risk.

Why do people jump out of airplanes? why do the race cars? because it's fun and kick that adrenalin into high rpm's.

I only log into the open MP mode, because it's dangerous and I DON'T want to be safe :)

I've never seen someone say this :S. Though considering all the assumptions about what people are thinking that goes on in these forums I wonder if this is just another example.

I've seen loads of people take issue with others not loving pve/hating pvp though, so maybe this is just the reverse.

Why not indeed, the first game was Single Player only, and don't believe all that guff about SOLO being, "Coward mode" that is just bleating from the well-equipped bullies who want lots of Noobs forced into their server to pwn.

You can still get killed quickly in Solo or Groups by the 'bots, like yesterday when FOUR 'Bot Pirates destroyed my type9 in less than a minute so MMO players don't know how dangerous Elite can be outside of the public servers because they never go there.

Why do people run on a treadmil in isolation?

Why do people meditate in a room on their own?

Why do people learn all manner of subjects by themselves?

....Because they enjoy it! They don't need danger. Safe is great.

Fortunately Elite suits all types of people!

If you avoid the distress signals and anarchy systems I would say go 'open play' and plan to do some trading, you might meat decent folks and make some friends.

Now if you chose to take a sidewinder with a loaner laser to the combat areas to practice combat against humans, good luck with that, i would say go 'solo' instead and practice on NPCs while earning credits.

Right now the build is a little bit unbalanced for new players, as most likely you are going to be greeted by vipers who will one-shot kill you, and the re-spawn is not instant like in other multiplayer pvp games. Plan for a good 5-10 minutes just traveling back to the combat areas just to be killed in 5 seconds, which can get old pretty fast.

Think i'll play the game as originally designed in the 80's, Solo, while I appreciate the online function; 400 billion stars, we will rarely see each other anyway (once we leave the main starting sectors).

I will invite people in my group play I want to chat to or just use steam to chat to others.

Have the Devs or Mr Braben mentioned 'Raid like events'...something to grab full online players ?
