Why Tritium for Fleet Carrier Fuel?

Hi Folks :)

I'm Outside the Core / Bubble systems and mining Tritium for fuel. In some ways it's relaxing, in other ways it gets pretty boring to tell the truth.
I don't know if this subject has been discussed before, or if it has discussed in more depth.
What I would like to know is why Frontier Developers decided to create this hmmm 🤔...how do describe this....mini game?
Was it simply to be a credit sink for those players with millions or billions of credits?....or was it simply to create a more complicated and involved feature for the Carrier ownership.

It seems to me that if the Carrier fuel was the same as for the other ships in the game surely (if designed right), Hydrogen (collection) could have been just as (if not more) interesting and readily available to use in place of Tritium.
Most Stations?...have Hydrogen for sale, but have any players traded it?
It seems weird to me that my ship (not Carrier) runs on a fuel that I can buy through the restock / repair facility at stations (and of course 'scoop') but I can't store the same item, Hydrogen, (bought as a commodity) in my ships inventory to use as fuel later on, when my main tank runs out.

Using Hydrogen from my Cargo hold to use as fuel could be transferred to my main tank, using a 'converter module' for example. The same (or enlarged version) could be fitted also to a Carrier. 🤷‍♂️

The Main Question, and this could probably be explained only by the Developers is why was the switch made from Hydrogen to Tritium for Carrier fuel in the first place?
Another question presents itself in this context would be how many players would swap the present mechanic of Tritium mining for a Hydrogen mechanic as I've roughly described ...what do you all think?
Would it take some of the tedium away from fuel collection for Carriers?...(I'm also wondering what fuel is going to be used for ships like the long awaited Panther, Boa & other as yet unknown 'large' ships) btw.;)
On another note, thinking of Colonia here, would the change from Tritium to Hydrogen destroy any Tritium based gameplay that is / was 'fun'?

Jack. :)

Filling up 1000000 Hydrogen would've been better? Because a T9/Cutter can nearly fit 1000, can't see how a Carrier wouldn't be using 100x that or even more.

I don't mind the basic premise of having to mine for fuel, but having recently tried some Platinum laser mining in a plat hotsport in a metallic ring I'd be much happier mining trit (in icy ring trit hotspots) if it had the same level of productivity as that (ie I want to be able to fill my hold with trit from an icy ring trit hotspot at about the same rate as I can obtain Plat from a metallic ring plat hotspot).

Scooping Hydrogen seems like it would be an AFK activity with no challenge at all. I like that there is some challenge (finding trit hotspots) while travelling with a carrier but I'd rather it not take quite as long.

AFAIK no official reasoning was given back when FCs were introduced, just that there would be a new mining commodity added to the game. In-game handwavium explanation is that FC/Megaships use a different jump technology - still doesn't explain why it had to be a rare hydrogen isotope but NMS uses it in a similar way so maybe it's part of the great space game conspiracy 🤪🤷‍♀️

Tritium collection rate was a lot better at one point after the couple of updates post FC release. That was when hotspots still provided a flat bonus instead of tapering off. Personally that hit the sweet spot for me as it encouraged hunting for double or triple overlaps, in turn increasing incentive for exploration. Downside was that all those changes also affected LTDs and VOs and briefly created absurd Cr/h ratios. And instead of the easy solution (reducing prices) we somehow ended up with a neutered hotspot mechanic,

Hi Riverside :)

Okay, I haven't done that much mining, just laser orientated stuff, though I've gathered from information (mostly on this forum) that Tritium mining is based on mostly surface mining with the 'standard' mining laser.
As you seem to hint in your second sentence, it takes a fair amount of time to collect Tritium in any large amount, from my own experience I've only been able to collect roughly 50 tons / units of the stuff in at least a couple of hours. Two hours of repetitive actions in this scenario is to my way of thinking not much fun eventually. That's just my personal view btw. other players will probably think differently. 🤷‍♂️ :)
