This thread reminds me of what newbies post when they experience EVE Online PVP.
Judging by the lack of communication tools and the game's features, ED appears to be a solo game. You're playing a full PVP game unless you choose the Solo option, and you'll get all kinds of PVP'ers preying on you. No sense analyzing motives.
The problems with open PVP are that you don't get attacked at the best moment when YOU feel like PVP'ing, and that eventually every trader, explorer, and non-combatant goes solo, leaving the pirates to pirate each other (no profit in it - no one is carrying cargo). And typically they're not looking for fair fights, they're looking for easy kills.
