Because it’s Elite. And for a certain generation...that means something.
It's the last space sim there is. Modern one that is. From most space games I played to far, be that the X games, Freelancer or whatever I returned to First Encounters (which is Elite's last prequel from the 90s) even though it's graphically much worse than the others. It has the galaxy simulation and the freedom and the simulation elements the others doesn't, and it's set in a world that is not filled with aliens for every occasion (a profit alien, a war alien, a weird alien) and much more believable in my opinion.
And then ED came and did the same with better graphics. It already compromises with a lot of things the prequels had concerning the space sim features, but well, it's still the very best there is. It's also not built after that stupid gaming recipe most games are made after nowadays. No instant gratification, a brutally steep learning curve and no stupid handholding.
Playing for over 3 years and I am not getting tired of it.
1. There are only a few modern titles in this genre.
2. It looks good, sounds good and feels good. The audio/visual aspects are great. The wide array of supported controls are amazing.
3. It’s not pay-to-Play.
4. It’s not Eve: Ongrind
5. It has a large community of English-speaking players.
6. The average chronological age of players is vastly higher than most games.
7. The average maturity of players is considerably higher than most games.
8. We’re nobody special. We’re not The Chosen One, we have no princess to rescue, no one is counting on us to do any particular thing. We’re all just some pilot with some ship. It’s very relaxing to not matter.
9. Genesis Alpha One won’t hit Early Access Until at least Jan 2020.
10. Star Citizen is a Chris Roberts game.
