Wouldn't be worth it until the game has had significantly more updates & content added.

Consider the vitriol on these forums currently. that's mainly from people who kinda know what to expect. imagine a wider, non elite/frontier audiences reaction...

why should they be on steam?
i don't see any reason for them personally to use steam platform.

8 Million concurrent users and near 50 million active account accounts is why. A wider audience is more money for FD. More money for FD means more content for us.

yea that would be a flood of wierd suggestions and moaning at the epic proportions. But why care about the forums - more players more money to FD to improve the game.

If ED had no press and were a niche game I'd agree. You might argue the niche part but its got a LOT of press. Steam gives a bigger audience but also takes a cut.

The only Good side I can see is if they add their Skins/Cosmetics to the Steam Market, just like Valve does with CS:GO skins.

Lots of people who play other games and sell their drops would be spending the extra cash on cosmetic items.

But I don't really care to be honest. I'm doing the same as others here, added as a non-steam game.

Do you really think all those people are so closed-minded that they believe games only exist on Steam? I am sure that's not the case.

I'm completely baffled as to why someone would ask "why have it on Steam?"

Are they not aware that Steam has a huge influence on the PC gaming market?

Yes they are doing fine so far.

The main thing holding back content is time not cash, if you do a little bit of research you will find that FD only used Kickstarter cash to fund everything up to the launch date (16th December), only after the pre-order customers started playing did they start a gradual draw down on that big pot of cash from all the pre-orders so atm they are quite ok financially. I also think that most gamers in the world are aware of ED by now and if not then I doubt that steam would help.

I've said it before, I'll say it again now - Please no Steam, it's an awful platform I've never had anything but trouble with.

I dont think Elite will be on Steam but it would expose Elite to the very wide audience.

yes a wide audience of people who want a easy hand holding experience that this game will not provide, only adding further to the forum tears and requests for game mechanics that were never intended for this game. keep steam away please. tia

You can add ED as Non-Steam game. Bottom left corner "Add a Game.." --> "Add a Non-Steam Game" and then use Browse to find your EdLaunch.exe.

Now when you launch ED from Steam your friends see you playing it.

I don't see how steam in particular is going to inspire whining. It's got the whining without Steam. I don't see how increasing the popularity of the game would be bad.

I find it very odd it's not on Steam already ... should have been on there during BETA imho.

FD would get a good influx of cash, which will benefit everyone in all kinds of ways. More players, more "filled" universe, more content and updates, etc....

Well... I would have liked it if ED could have used steams distribution servers for downloading the client. I had to resort to using the python script to download it when I first installed ED. I really tried to let the launcher download. Started it, came back 5 hours later and it was only 20% complete. Used the python script and downloaded the whole thing in a few minutes. That is an issue that never happens to me on Steam. Or officially allow a torrent or something for downloading. I know a lot of people complain about Steam, but I think it is the only digital distribution system I haven't had problems with (other than at Steam launch back with Half Life.)

Plenty of companies have games that use steam and also are available without steam. I think adding to steam would be a net benefit to players. For Frontier's side of this, they would end up giving a portion of steam sales to Valve. It's clearly up to them to determine if the (huge!) increased exposure is worth the cut.
