Steam?

Will E4D evetually make it's way to steam once released?

The reason why I asked is because on numerous occasions friends of mine have bought the game they saw me playing a lot.

I suppose that is possible Deej, but goodness knows what distribution model David has in mind. Perhaps they will have their own download server to maximise the profits of each copy they sell after release? Every penny from every copy sold goes straight to themselves instead of "middle men" taking a cut. I guess we will have to wait until the kickstarter is by with before any details are known.

Personally (apart from their own servers), I would love to see a DRM free GOG release. That site is just getting better and better and it's full of space sim fans too thanks to the presence of the likes of the Freespace and Wing Commander games already on there.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when Play.com phone him (and they will phone him, no doubts about that) to ask if they could host it! :p I think his answer would not be suitable for these gentle forums :D

Frontier would be a bit daft not to go via Steam. I get all my games from there now as do millions of other people. The games I do not see on Steam (Rise of Flight etc) are struggling for new fans. I hate to say it but Steam is THE place to be at the moment and with the closure of practically all the high street game shops its the only place to get games other than directly from the makers or Ebay/Amazon.

If they really must go with Steam then at the very least have a non-Steam option.
This may surprise some of you fans of Steam, but some people really hate Steam to the point they simply won't buy a game on there, no matter which game it is.

Unfortunatly that is true (there are some valid complaints but thats a topic for another thread) - I'm the opposite I very rarely buy games these days if they aren't on steam.

I think Elite would do well on Steam tho - as someone mentioned above quite often friends will end up buying a game or expressing interest in a game that they see me playing that they've never been exposed to before and just getting on the front page of steam for a few days would give it massive exposure to people who probably have never heard of it.

They are definitely in the minority and are probably old whinges who are probably too old to be gamers any more. They remember the good old days of real boxes and manuals and are fighting against progress. I mean I regret that as well but I am not daft enough to fight against it just for the principle. The market place for games now, as before, is the 20-30 bracket and they most definitely all use Steam.

I don't like Steam having a monopoly myself but I use it for everything now - just the fact that you don't need a disk to play a game makes it worthwhile for me never mind auto patch updating, online backup, easy re-installation of all of your games, instant purchase and play, easy online play facilties, and Steam achievements.

I'd add myself to the list of Steam users - not only is it, like Nats said, great for reinstalling games but it's a hugely popular portal so having Elite: D on the front page of that would certainly translate into sales. That can only be a good thing IMO.

Old whinger am I?
Let me explain why I don't like Steam ...
It is 3rd party software that I am forced to have installed and running to play a game. If an extra program is running, that is taking up RAM and CPU which could be used to make the game run better.

Am I against change? against downloading games rather than buying them off the shelf? Not at all. I actually like Good Old Games.com very much. Buy my game, download it, install it, play it. No 3rd party software needed to be running to play my game. If I want to re-install my game, I just download it again from GoG.com.

So if I have a choice between GoG.com and Steam ... I'll choose GoG.com everytime. How people cannot see that having Steam running so you can play a game is not a good thing, really baffles me.

Lastly ... "I am not daft enough to fight against it just for the principle" "I don't like Steam having a monopoly myself but I use it for everything now" These are not good statements. Trust me on something, Elite: Dangerous does not need Steam, it's more the other way around.

Yeah old whinger is a bit harsh. As for RAM being used up - I have 16GB of it and an i7-2600K processor running at around 4.5GHz so a little app like Steam goes unnoticed on my pooter. With Steam I have a separate HDD for all my games so when I rebuild my PC, I just re-run the steam client from the games directory. Re-verify the game files and within about 10 mins I have my entire games collection back up and running with no large downloads required. It's a pretty nice way of doing things IMO and as far as DRM goes it's not doing any harm to your pooter. I don't think that Steam has quite earned the bad rap it gets from some fronts.

Whinger was not a bit harsh lol.

Anyway yes I know I know:) I am aware of all of what you say. But the benefits outweigh the negatives for me and most others.

I would be more than happy to buy Elite Dangerous from Frontier directly as long as it didnt come with any other DRM but that's it isn't it thats the big problem. If it isn't Steam what is it? Ubisoft's constant online to play system? Not a chance. SecuROM - no way.

You see until publishers come up with an alternative that gets over the piracy problem Steam is here to stay. Like it or not. Its the pirates that have caused this situation. Steam is the result, and that is far better than the alternatives believe me.

And its also encouraging some great little games to come out now as well that werent able to be published before so again that is a distinct benefit from Steam.

Like it or not its the only possibility for the moment for good gaming.

It doesn't matter to me if you have Deep Blue (yeah ... us old whingers know what Deep Blue is) and Steam uses no RAM or CPU,
It is the mere fact that you need a 3rd party software to play a game.

If I buy a game, fair enough, I have to download it, that is change & progress, and I'm not against that. But to install and play the game, I should be able to do that directly with the game and not need the permission of a middleman.

Another thing that would put me off a game is being forced to be online to play a single player game, such as Diablo III and GTA IV.

EDIT : If it's not steam then what DRM is it? Simple ... an emailed passkey. Blizzard did that when I bought Diablo II Lord Of Destruction from them (for back up purposes) and it works just fine

Not really - that is exactly the same system that most commercial software use for registration and it is the easiest to crack using a Keygen utility. This is how loads of people have full copies of MS Office, Photoshop, 3dsMax, Adobe Creative Suite etc on their computers at home.

Ohhhhh, I hate that with a passion! You want to play a SP game, but because the servers are having problems, you can't bloody well get in to play your game!

I have no objection to Steam. I already run it. I did object, back when Halflife 2 came out, but I wanted Halflife 2 so I accepted Steam.

Now, I think I'd prefer it. Otherwise every company will have their own software distribution app, most will suck terribly and have horrible DRM built in. As it is Steam isn't terrible, and while it does ave DRM built in, it's an acceptle level. You can re-install your games as often as you like on as many PC's as you like. it's not particularly invasive.

Yes, in an ideal world DRM wouldn't exist. But it does, so lets go with the best one available, and from what I can see, that is steam.

Ha ha! I hated Steam when Half Life 2 came out - but that's because I couldn't play it! I had no internet back then (yes, I know) and I couldn't get the convoluted offline CD mode to work.

Multiple delivery methods are possible.

- Steam (or some other game platform)
- P2P torrent with the seed file hosted by Frontier
- Direct DL from Frontier / hosting company

I have no preference - as long as offline mode works I am happy

Do what is best for ELITE but I don't want to be tied to steam I despise it.

I want to open the box (yes I know this is digital copy) install it that's it I don't want steam to get patches I don't want steam just to fire it up I don't want steam on my system, I don't want a steam account. I hate this DRM.

Now I have no objections to people having to be able to get it on Steam sure, not a problem so long as I don't have to be tied to Steam to get it.

There was an investigation recently as to why a game on US steam was something like $10 and for Australia (who has an exchange rate higher than the US dollar) was $50 so there were things like that.

I understand Steam is popular and Elite has to do what will best serve the audience but as Geraldine says I'm hoping for just something like a CD key and that's it. No online activation no constant internet required so I can play it in the middle of a forest with my laptop and if my laptop dies I don't have to write a 50 page report why I want to install it again. ...... I don't want to go into pros and cons for DRM.

Steam is enough for me to abort purchasing any title. I am completely in the minority so this point is pretty much moot. :)

Please I don't want a Steam war I know people love it and that's fine. Humble Bundle for example (sure different model) I can use steam or I can direct download and avoid Steam completely which I do.

I love the GOG model as Geraldine says.
