Will single player be completely and utterly offline no internet needed

Same. I don't plan on ever going MP at all. SP is very important to people like us Rollo.

I'm gonna come over to your house and run around it yelling "pew pew pew" and "arrrrg I is a pirate and I be boarding your poop deck!!!" when you're playing... just so you feel like you're actually playing multiplayer... even when you're not.

Welcome :D We can't be getting too serious about it all. What's the point if you can't have fun.

Stygrron, is that not what pirates do? Was it my misspelling of the arrrrrgh?

Oh behave Steve! You take virtual reality to a whole new level! :D

Regarding the actual plans for the whole online Galaxy. Would it not mean that you can't really start from the beginning when you eventually (inevitably) get pew-pew-pewed or smashed into some asteroid or starbase? I mean sure you can start over, but not really from the beginning-beginning as everything must change?
Ross 154 might have fallen into anarchy because Steve decided to blow up all the toilets in the system, so now I would have to start from...hmm...Riedquat? Oh no, the horror! The possible varaiations is endless (which is cool btw) but you can't start from the very beginning ever again, which is kind of sad. No. Really!

Rollo - the whole universe is your toilet. I hardly think that my lavatory extermination campaign would actually have that much effect... unless there was a fair about of peripheral damage. I suspect if it got to that people may be a little more concerned over their planets, toilets would be fairly secondary.

I do actually agree with you. There is a question of gauging progress from a set point if both the starting point and the environment are shifting. What it does require though is a shift in thought about how you 'live' your path in the universe. To me it sounds a little more like real life. Once you get over that hurdle of having a fixed starting situation the possibilities become quite interesting. In my opinion anyway, I think it's a good thing that the universe is going to be a growing, changing living thing. The dynamics of having so many people potentially creating a living breathing environment gets me properly fizzing.

Funny, I thought there was a court ordered injunction stopping you doing that???

gets me properly fizzing.

And I know you've been banned from doing that!!

I've just posted on Kickstarter and I'll update the FAQ shortly.

The intended single player experience with the evolving galaxy requires connecting to the server. However it will be possible to play the game without this. You won't get all of the same features such as new missions and changing galaxy conditions, but you will be able to play the game. What the exact differences will be hasn't been determined yet.

We're not sure whether you'll be able to sync with the seerver after starting your own game, we'll look into that nearer the time.

Michael

FANTASTIC NEWS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From KS "Good morning everybody. I've had a chat with David and gained more clarity on the single player question. The intended experience with the evolving galaxt will need to sync with the server. However you will be able to have a stand alone save if you choose. Note that the offline save won't contain all of the server features (exactly how it will balance out is unknown at the moment) and it may not be possible to sync an offline save with the server state, although we'll look at how we can do this.

So yes, you can haveyour own save without having to connect to the galaxy server."

So looks like you have SP without ever needing to sync anything and you can stay offline indefinitely...

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care what it costs me I'm upping my pledge !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:):):):)

oh sorry I forgot

thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou

:):):)

Good to see you happy, mate! Would be a shame to loose you (and those others concerned about SP/MP) Hopefully a lot of the "on-the-fencers" will also see this post and be reassured enough to put their pledges in :D

And just to add my thanks also, it is not only Styggron that is not going to play in MP mode. Elite is what it is, a glorious journey of self-discovery in the simulated galaxy. I meet people everyday, sometimes it is nice to get away from all that, computer games can give you that space (like reading a book, but an interactive book!) ;)

That's great news, glad that we wont be tied to a server for SP :D

Well at least we can all practice our docking and landings in single player without the shame of 1,000 people watching us crash into the wall/floor.....

Just on the other side of it though; I hope you will not be able to exploit the game by constantly flicking between online and offline states to prevent yourself losing a valuable mission or trade run, etc.

I agree - having a 'live' environment is just as exciting an idea as having real people to interact with in the game.

I love the idea of actually trading 'competitively' with a properly dynamic market. I can't wait to see/hear more.

It will be like PvP for us oldies with less twitchy piloting skills.... economic war ftw.

I hope you'll all give the connected game a try as it is the way we want people to experiece it, but you have the option if it's not your thing.

Michael

Certainly will, I will probably have the SP as a long term career mode and the MP as a more social side of the game.

Time however will tell.

Glad news is starting to filter out.

Thank you for the clarification. :)

As you said, Michael, details remain to be hammered out (obviously) but at least we know the option for true SP exists now.

My main concern with all this syncing is that things will change while I cannot play, leaving me baffled at what happened, since for me time will not have passed in the game since I had no time to play it (this is, for me any way, the main thing about a true single-player experience -- the universe does not go on without me, as it is my universe, the way I enjoy gaming foremost).
