Will the 2020 ED build move away from peer to peer?

See thread title. Highly speculative of course and I don't believe Fronteir would move away from it's networking structure, since there is no evidence for it what so ever. But if Frontier should ever move away from p2p, to what else but servers should they move?
Ah, I see. When I read "Whatever the guys from planetside 2 are doing, it works", I thought you were comparing p2p-A to p2p-B. You lost me when I read "servers" after that :)

But true indeed, client-server works better for highers numbers of players than p2p where traffic grows exponentially.

Question for Znort - are there any exmples of hybrid applications, where certain features are p2p and others are central server?

It probably will depend if Frontier want's the game to embrace more player vs player combat in upcoming editions, possibliy including fleet carriers.
It's just terrible that the game sometimes even struggles with 4 vs 4 match-ups. I suspect it's the p2p nature that even small instances tend to mess up if there is one "difficult" participant. But I have no networking expertice howsoever.

On average, how many players play simultaneously in the game currently ?

The current number would justify it an investment in a real Client / Server ?

I do not know the numbers but I ask myself the question.

yes, as vandaahl points out elite is actually a hybrid. i know of no game that is pure p2p (although i see no reason for those to not exist, if the type of game allows it), you need a server anyway for authorization etc., it depends on features. in elite missons, transactions etc are all run through servers, it's just the flying and shooting around and meeting other players that's handled by the peers (which is the problem imo). even there i suspect frontier servers are involved in part of the handshake or monitoring.

The problem is UDP, that is heavily used in p2p connections, that does not offer any guarantees in what order the information ends up on the other side, or if it ends up there at all. Therefore, long distance or multi hop network traffic tends to become less stable. TCP on the other hand, is a different monster, but doesn't route very good. Or at least thats what understood of it when I hear the OPS guys talk, I'm a code slave more or less :)

No, they're not gonna rewrite the netcode. There might be some optimizations to be made, but there's basciallly zero chance of its current implementation changing.

It seems I misunderstood too. :) I assumed the comparison was p2p vs server - but from what you write here you mean Planetside is also peer to peer (I've never played it, know nothing about it)?

The supposed roadmap leaks that have been happening (which has been accurate so far) does not mention atmospheric landings, unfortunately. But it does mention spacelegs and base building actually.
But anyway, I don't have too much hope for New Era considering Frontier's development speed on Elite so far.
Yes I know, but I hope that not everything leaked... I still believe this leak is somehow intentional

New Era will be an offline, story-based, single player game that maintains a 'blaze your own trail' open world. 🤗

Sorry you lost me at story-based, even if it was a story about hunting down people poaching pachyderms for rain water storage containers.

Depends where it is.

It's, erm, in storage at the moment.
Send a downpayment to my paypal addy to cover the cost of starting the administration work to get it delivered.

Also, while I'm at it, I have this friend who's a Nigerian prince....

Just to get things straight I pay for the bridge and you and the prince cover the delivery cost.
