Will you pre-order the next DLC? I will... and that's why:

But FD doesn't need financial help. They're very well established and have successfully become a self publisher. They've made it to the bug leagues as far as their commercial endeavors.

And it appears that FD never did really need our help. There was a budget to develop ED and the KickStarter money that was portrayed as vital, was just a bit of icing on the top.

All the effort that was put in to the KickStarter was the result of a little bit of manipulation by Frontier, our loyalty was played on and not, in my experience, returned.

Kickstarters are a bit of a scam if you ask me. A company that's existed for 20 years shouldn't be scrounging for handouts to launch a product. It's just a way of getting gullible people to inject cash into the business without the shareholders losing any control. The people who win are those that own stock - several million pounds getting loaded on to the company balance sheet with no obligation to pay any of it back? Yes please. I'd do it for a small, new-start looking to build something innovative. Not an established video game business who can easily issue shares or bonds if they need to raise capital. They just took the p out of naive gamers.

First of all, I'm not talking to either game bashers or white knights, but instead to rational people that like more or less what they have and want more and/or better.

Maybe tomorrow, maybe after 3 months Frontier will announce the next paid DLC for Elite... If pre-order is available, would you do it or not? I will, and that's why:

Generally speaking, I rarely pre-order any game and, like CMDR Exigeous was saying in a stream, "pre-ordering software is stupid", I have to admit.

But in this particular case, I would make an exception and not because of my eternal love for the game, but for more tangible benefits.

At this point in time, I believe that although Frontier did their homework assessing the potential of a new paid DLC and creating a state of "favorable expectation" for the player base by choosing to make Beyond first, they still don't know for sure how (financially) successful the new DLC will be. And this will generate a potential problem, in terms of the actual content, directly proportional with the commitment of the resources.

TL,DR, Horizon was not 100% what they (and we) expected and they don't want to make the same mistake twice. So, by pre-ordering the new DLC in good quantities, we, the players, may be able to assure that the content for the future DLC won't be scaled down or rushed, or let in the hands of the (no offense) B team.

It will be a clear message, like "Go on, make it 100%, we'll buy it no matter what" or something beyond those lines. What do you think?

I will almost certainly pre-order, because a full year of free stuff.....especially Chapter 4.....has completely restored my faith in FDev's ability to deliver a magnificent game (not that I truly doubted it, though.....if that makes sense?) My decision to pre-order, though, has nothing to do with whether I think that will result in a better game.

Your throwing the n word into the mix is particularly depressing. In the Anglosphere, it used to mean something deeply offensive to citizens of the US for historical reasons and mean very dark skinned person everywhere else. The British offensive term was (colour)(illegitimate son). It's why a contraction of Pakistani is considered so offensive today- it's hardly an insult to suggest that someone's ancestry can be traced to the Himalayan foothills, but as verbal shorthand for (country)(illegitimate son) it was a very different matter.

Sadly, the intent and context of our language no longer matters, instead we constantly self censor, terrified of offending each other with the use of a Haram word or phrase, while vile and truly despicable remarks are uttered by persons adept at doubleplusgood duckspeak and goodthink.

I've used 'leper' many times, well aware of it's miserable connotations (that was the whole point). I'm Scottish, I've never even heard the n word used in casual conversation. I haven't used 'leper' in years, along with a dictionary's worth of similar words. What was once banter is now wrongthink.

I don't think our culture is enriched by our verbal cowardice. I think it emboldens and empowers otherwise weak people willing to play on ever more convoluted victim narratives. The future belongs to them; a bleak, repressive back to front and upside down future where excellence in any sphere will be a very real handicap to whatever poor fool fails to hide their natural flair or talent. [sad]

Well since you were the only one who took the time to answer, the least I can do is answer back.

First off, I think it was pretty obvious that my use of the n-word wasn't meant to be insulting in any way. It was just meant to illustrate my point. I am not part of the Anglosphere, as you put it, so the n-word wasn't even something I could learn in school, it was picked up from media. I understand that using it is bad, but if using it even as an example is offensive, then my apologies.

Coming back to the leper part, I will continue to think that it's distasteful to use it. But since we carry out conversations on this forum in English, and since language use inherits cultural norms, then I will just have to adhere to what the majority of English speakers consider normal.

So I guess the line is drawn below the n-word, but above leper.

Morray Starboat and Panther Clipper confirmed as exclusive pre-order ships :p

Jokes aside, even if i would not own a LEP, i would pre-order. I played this game for 4 years almost exclusively and it is still by far the best VR game available. If i can support this project, i will for sure.

I pre-ordered all of them in 2015. ...However, in hindsight, I probably would not repeat the process.

I'm in a similar boat, except that I would do it again.

The difference is that I did so in 2014 for £35, and so with Horizons I have already got good value from my LEP, and from this point on it is all jam.

And in the mean time I very happily show my continued support through buying far more paint jobs than anyone could ever reasonably require.

Happy new year commanders.

OP. Probably. I've had great value for money so far. £70 / 2000 hours = ~£0.035 per hour. Not many games have given me that kind of value.
Imagine you could have the most fun you had in your life for 30 minutes at 70 pounds or 2000 hours of ED for the same prize. What is more worth it? Hard to tell, isn't it?

Is that irony? Beyond was mostly game fixes, FDev could hardly charge twice for Engineers or some woefully underdeveloped main career being a bit more fleshed out or Guardian content, which felt delayed, C&P, which hardly added nice game mechanics.

Yes, the purchase was totally worth it, regardless that i payed a lot more, when LEP was offered with Horizons. I got 4 years of fun for the cash and i could easily spent that amount on food and drinks on a party weekend... Absolute no-brainer.

Why should it be irony? In my opinion Beyond has been the best year the game has seen so far. Not everyone on this forum hates it like you do.

Never. Theres no reason to preorder when theres no supply concerns. Digital product, infinite copies, no worries.
Paying before you can review what you actually get is shooting yourself in the foot and preorder bonuses dont make it any better, id argue they make it worse!

While i very much enjoy Elite and probably will buy shouldnt it be a major disappoingment, i will not, ever, support preorders.

True, but I guess it wasn't done just for cash and finance but also for marketing. I wouldn't have known a new elite is being worked on if it wasn't for the kickstarter. On the other hand, my first impression wasn't really great: If it needed a kickstarter - it might well crash and burn like startups do sometimes. That was my 1st takeaway.

Frontier got us to pay their marketing costs? It's not really getting any better.

The KickStarter created an engaged community, that Frontier seem to have been edging away from ever since. It's notable that neither Planet Coaster, nor Jurassic World were KickStarted.

Dunno, probably. Depends on what they offer and for how much. I know that it'll be better value sooner than later, but that doesn't mean I'll have the cash ready for it.

Agreed, if they offer exclusive content, for pre-ordering then yes
