Windows 7 Compatibility

Does this and new code only on build 4.0 mean ED can finally move away from the Win (Xbox) 32 button limit on hotas? XInput API is so poor.

I do wish the "I've spent far too much on a new rig and want to feel justified for my needless expenditure" gang would leave off actively harassing/ridiculing those of us who are perfectly happy with older hardware and windows 7. No one asked to be insulted or ridiculed or did anything to deserve it/upset people with newer gear, so please leave us alone.

I know these forums can be less than charitable at times, but if you do get personally ridiculed you should probably take that up with the mods..

I didn't have a PC before ED came out, then around 2014 in time for Premium Beta, I decided to build a Windows 7 rig to play it. After updating the OS, replacing the GFX card, RAM, storage, and CPU, it's the same PC but faster. :D

Old hardware is not the same as an old OS with known security vulnerabilities.

No one asked to be insulted or ridiculed or did anything to deserve it...
I used to work for a small ISP. I had days at work where BotNets of user machines were used to DDOS various websites my company hosted. Another incident included rebooting servers that cost us thousands of pounds of lost revenue. In both cases, the actual attacks were directed through older, unpatched machines.
You might not want to hear it, but using an OS with known unpatched vulnerabilities enables people to do things from your machine that they wouldn't do from their own.

Known public exploits since Win7 went EOL

For Steam players they have until the end of the year to get off of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 now: https://www.techpowerup.com/306536/valve-discontinuing-steam-support-on-windows-7-8-8-1-as-of-2024
This is one of the biggest factors making me reconsider Steam. Considering Steam sells a TON of older games written for older operating systems (for example, original Homeworld series, Portal, etc), I feel their client should continue to work on at least Windows 7. I get that new games will require more modern versions of Windows, but if I were a Windows 7 holdout happily playing my Windows 7 games, and Steam says, "Sorry, you can no longer play those games, because of reasons." I'd be pretty ticked.

I say this as a Windows 10 holdout who has ZERO interest in upgrading to Windows 11. I don't like the idea that Steam can pull the plug on my collection of games someday because their launcher "needs" Windows 11. A simple launcher that currently works on older Windows shouldn't someday stop working. This planned obsolescence is a bane of the industry. Again, I totally get that new GAMES will want to take advantage of new tech like new DirectX, but if the Steam launcher "needs" this new tech, then it makes me wonder just what this launcher is doing besides launching games...

When that day comes, I will likely seek an alternative to Steam, even if that means (the topic that shall not be discussed, but Morbad knows what I'm talking about).
