Oh, absolutely.
They should contact support too. It is entirely possible they will activate the gifts on his account if they find that indeed he did scanned the datalinks from the SRV
However, the SRV on your ship might be linked to your ship. And the gifts are given to Horizons players too, so they're running in " compatibility mode"
So your friend might need indeed to play his own ship to get the gifts

It's no surprise that only the owner of the ship (SRV) gets to collect the goods from a scan by that ship (or SRV). That is not a bug; it's a feature. The problem would come if your friend cannot collect the goods when using his own ship, because he tried it first with yours. If he is permanently banned from getting the reward, THAT's a bug.
