With console staying on Horizon, does that mean PC will have both an Horizon and Odyssey build ?

As mentioned in the title, with Horizon staying for consoles, does that also mean the Odyssey-Horizon "merge" that was planned is not going to happen ? Will we keep both Horizon (same as console) and Odyssey on PC ?
Right now, Horizon is separate from Odyssey, and players from one can't play with players from the other one (AFAIK). They need to be on the same "build". So, what it means for players ? Will consoles players be forever unable to play with Odyssey players ? Or PC players as a whole if the merge still happens ?

Pure guesswork but I'd assume FDev won't want to keep on updating two galaxies so I suspect they'll still attempt to unify them in some way.

Kind of hope they do keep them separate, though.
Seems like it's a lot easier to gather raw mat's in Horizons.

Odyssey is a separate purchase, and will likely stay that way in foreseeable future. So I guess we'll still have option to launch Horizons.

I'm speaking of the build. Not of the features. They said Odyssey would be merged with Horizon, but the people who didn't own the DLC wouldn't be able to use Odyssey features (atmo landing, spacelegs....). For the feature like the new lightning, UI and planet gen. It was simply so they didn't have to update 2 builds for patches and stuff.

Like Horizon and "vanilla" were merged. It was the same build, but vanilla didn't have the planetary landings for example.

I feel the same but I fear the builds will be merged.

I tried playing horizons content in Odyssey, but it's still just too buggy and I absolutely hate the map interface and patchwork planets.

If they don't fix that before the merger, I'll probably just give up.
...and things were so good after the combat rebalance too.
godammit...

But no doubt they'll find a way to mess that up too...

The "C" in Frontier Development is for "Competence". The "Q" stands for Quality.

I'm asking for a few reasons. First, Horizon is still best for a few things, notably raw mat gathering for engineering.
But also because if console stay on Horizon build, and is not merged to Odyssey (without the DLC features), that mean they can only play with PC horizon player. And if PC is merged, then they simply can't play with PC.

So, not only they'd lose access to future development, but they'll be cut off from the rest of the playerbase.

If they want a single code base they have to merge horizons with odyssey, simple as that. They are probably still trying to reach that point where enough players are convinced by the odyssey UI and planet terrain that it can be done. ASAP I would think.
That'd be my idea, but that'd mean Console will not be able to play with PC players at all. On top of not having any updates in the future.
Unless they get merged to.

The other is that EDH has different C+P rules to EDO. Will they keep the old graphics engine but merge the rest, since the new engine would kill low spec Horizon guys dead?

The graphics engine is part of the code base...
Yes, but the question is how much interdependence is there? If the new engine is fused to EDH its going to spank low end hardware and consoles really, really hard. Can they keep the old graphics but keep the rest unified? Time will tell but its this which is going to complicate things even more.
