Wormhole

It would have worked a bit differently if it had been set in the Elite Dangerous universe, though.

Navigator: Captain, we've been thrown through a wormhole to the Oupaisly region, around 50,000 LY from Earth.
Captain: Status report?
Engineer: FSD and scoop are operational at 75%, significant damage to distributor, shields and drives, hull integrity at 44%.
Captain: Plot a course for home. With proper shifts we should be back in 3 days and able to get repairs.

See, I actually kind of like the idea of wormholes for that exact reason.

Make 'em a bit like they were in Farscape, whereby they're rare but predictable and you can use instruments to figure out where one might pop up next.

Set up an engineer who's a whizz at modifying ships for exploration.
Give him a mod' which allows an ADS to be improved in a way which allows it to help predict the appearance of a wormhole.
You then take your exploration ship and spend a couple of days hunting down a wormhole.
When you finally track one down, alone or in a group, you have to decide whether or not to throw yourself into it.
If you do, you pop out at a random location in the galaxy (perhaps the more powerful the wormhole, the further it'd take you?).
You then have a head-start in any exploring you want to do.

Not the most content-filled addition for explorers but it'd be something and I think it'd be kind of fun to take a "magical mystery tour" around the galaxy, hoping you'd built a ship capable of the return journey.

This seems to a duplicate of another thread about fast travel.

I'm deeply against any form of fast travel, but I am up for wormholes as exploration content.
If I added them, they'd be;
•Very Rare,
•1 way. No quick return.
•Organised in to categories, which indicate a rough distance it might go, for example, a Cat 1 would be around 10ly, a Cat 5 would be anything upto 10,000ly, and a Cat 9, would be completely random exit.
•More dangerous the higher category you go. Jumping a Cat 9 could leave you with severe hull damage, or even destroy your ship.
•a manual flight down the tunnel (damage not left to RNG, but skill!)
•worthwhile to scan the entry point.
•very very profitable if you scan your exit point.
•a Non persistent USS. But wings would be able to jump them together, and end up in the same place.
•a random exit within the target system, from millions of Ls from anything, to above the surface of a planet, to inside a stars exclusion zone.
•You would always exit in normal space, not supercruise, with a FSDi style spin/crash depending on how well you navigated the wormhole.

So not fast travel, but a risk Vs reward content for explorers and adventurers. :)

If you found one in the bubble, you could recreate your own star trek voyager story line. :p

Agree with this. As always, can't rep because gotta share the rep. Stop putting such good comments will you :p

Also for people saying it's not realistic or whatever, neither is faster than light travel or even witchspace and for that matter neither are Thargoids

I don't know how often this idea has been discussed, it's not exactly ED realism......but still, a deep space 9 style wormhole, either to the other side of the galaxy in the middle of nowhere, or to Thargoid territory wherever that is (in our galaxy of course). Or even a Star Trek Voyager style wormhole or device that is just a one way mechanism.
I think something like this would attract new players, bring old ones back, and keep current ones interested, also it would make for great story progression.
Please understand that this is just an idea, i'm a loyal ED player going nowhere whatever happens, just testing the mood for an idea like this.
o7, Kirk out.

The trouble with wormholes is, you don't know what's going to come out of them. Just ask the guy in my Avatar about the Dominion. :p

I'm actually against the idea of wormholes in ED, for the same reason I was against instant ship transfer - the scale of the galaxy would get artificially reduced.

Besides, I think ED are heading towards enabling long distance travel with dock-able Megaships which would move across the galaxy now and then, or at least I remember reading that on these forums a while ago.
