X:Rebirth... revisited

http://store.steampowered.com/app/415800/

So apparantly the worst space game ever released is still being worked on, with free and paid for DLC. And apparantly the reviews are overwhelmingly positive! As with any X-game, apparantly they need 2-3 years to have their crappy release titles turn into decent games. Anyone else trying it again?

I never tried it...but have always been interested.

The reviews certainly kept me at a distance.

30 dollars for the game

50 to include expansions...

Eh...IDK, I think I can wait for a lower price.

I look forward to hearing some new opinions though!

X-Rebirth as of 4.0 and Hol dlc is a fantastic game ..
Unfortunately it had a bad release and there were a lot of but hurt people ...
I've given it another go and I'm having a blast ..this is from an old x -series fan ...
Highly recommend if you like space/empire building games ...

Think it is worthwhile playing the base game w/o expansions?

30 dollars is about on the edge of what I'm willing to spend on video games at this time...though the stupid in me is totally gonna shell out full price for Civilization VI.

X-Rebirth base game is $7.77 on G2A. HOL expansion is €9.99 on steam so should be about $10-15(guess). Not a bad deal as long as your into strategic sandbox type games and aren't averse to its rough edges!

Heh, I tried it when they had a free weekend on Steam.

Even at that price I felt ripped off. ;)

Hmm, maybe I'll look at it again. I purchased the initial release and was gobsmacked at how bad it was. People are rubbishing NMS for a bad release, but it has NOTHING on the trainwreck that was NMS on day 1, but maybe it's time for a second look.

Been playing it now for two days and its MUCH better. I pre-ordered it, and it was the worst launch I ever saw. But now it actually works, and a metric ton of features have been added. After about 8 hours (new gamne->freeplay, too many bad memories of the campaign) I now have done a number of missions and got a few medium-sized traders with armed escorts. While I fly all over the system, doing missions, hiring trade agents on each station and scouting for deals and missions, my mini-fleet is slowly starting to pay for itself. I'll write more later, but its really well recommended to try again if you already bought it. :)

Can't see myself going back to that nightmare of a game.

Are you still stuck in one ship? Does it still have that awful space lane mini game rubbish?

I picked some form of it up on sale, includes all the expansions etc. It's on my list to play as i liked the X games well enough (X2 modded being my favourite, and X3 modded was very pretty), but that release version was something else.....Still for like the £10 or whatever it cost it should be worth some of my time, at some point :)

I've looked at x-Rebirth on and off for a long time and never ever bought into it. Watching videos it does seem like something I'd enjoy. I know they had issues when it was released, but credit to the devs for sticking at it and trying to sort through those issues.
Is it a good buy for SP explorer/trader/miner types.. ?
:)

Well, its strictly SP so that part is covered. ;) I dont know about exploring, to be honest. The universe is MUCH smaller than ED, its more 'SC' like in scope. You cant land on planets, or scan them, or get any info on them. Space is firmly a backdrop in X:R, so if astronomy/exploration is your main thing I doubt you'll enjoy it. As for trading/mining: thats pretty much what this game is about. Its best to see the game as having two 'sides':

1) You and your ship. You cannot change ship, outfitting is very limited. Flight model is a bit SC-like, but with more weight, and the combat has the depth of NMS basically. You'll spend times doing missions, discovering new regions, getting your trade-data and scouting for deals. Its deeper than NMS, but not even close to ED.

2) Trading. Here is where the Cool Stuff happens. The entire economy is simulated to an absurd point. All stations produce and require all kinds of materials (so no longer the 1:1 stuff of earlier x-games), with demand/supply dynamically influencing the prices. Shoot a trader and the cargo is removed, raising the cost of it on the market and delaying any production that was dependend on its delivery. You can build trade fleets, hire NPC crew for it and assign hierarchy. Have a cruiser protect a huge freighter, and have a bunch of escort fighters under the command of the cruiser, that kind of stuff. Eventually you'll start building stations, and have the ability to set up completely independent production chains. Spend enough time on it and you'll be able to produce the most expensive stuff using many different stations producing the required components, all the way down to using the raw materials your mining fleet provided. All of this happens in real-time, with mining drones buzzing around, cargo ships shuttling between the station and freighter, police NPC scanning for contraband (and with a high rep you can buy licenses for various commodity types or even join the police). Tired of a competitor? Build a war fleet, dock on a massive capital-class battlecruiser and start messing other stations up. You give orders to your cmdrs, who will give orders all the way down the chain. Then you enjoy a massive space battle from the bridge, or hop into your ship and join the fun.

Its obviously the wrong choice for people looking for multi-player, or a great dogfighting game. People not into combat will find a great 'space tycoon' game with awesome graphics, great depth, first-person walking, Steam Workshop mod-support and a difficulty-slider for those who really dont like combat.

Its no competitor to either ED, NMS, I:B, SC or even X3. But its a great game in its own right, and well recommended. I do somewhat recommend torrenting it first to see if it works. Its working super smooth over here, but due to the massive and absurdly stupid issues at launch I can understand when not everyone wants to take a gamble on this one.

Difficult to give a right answer. I'd say the durable bashing the game suffered early on was well deserved: asides from the gameplay itself, it was a bugfest like no other. So were X2 and X3 at the beginning, but after some ironing and a steep learning curve, those games gameplay (the same, basically) were among the most addictive you could experience in the genre .Both were incredible games (and still are in fact).

Rebirth gameplay part was the nail on the coffin. The bugs got ironed out, lots of features were added, true to Egosoft long term development style, but the gameplay was never on par with the previous games. It's a long topic, but let's say that everything feels very limited compared to its predecessors.

So, if you haven't played any of the games before, you *might* enjoy it. I'd stick with ED, though. If you have played the previous games and enjoyed them, don't bother.

Currently the only real complaint about X:R is that it isn't X4. But whats the point of the comparison? You're basically saying "If you've never eaten a pizza, you may enjoy this waffle, but I suggest you stick to pancakes. If you did enjoy pizza, dont bother with the waffle."

It makes no sense: they are different things. You can enjoy all, none or some of them. If the name X:Rebirth bothers you, just pretend its called "Xnorly: glarbang". :D If someone likes Solo trading/mining in ED, they will find much deeper gameplay in those areas in X:R.

Meh, nah. Illegal argument.

Let's stay in the pizza analogy, it's a good one, but try this: "If you've never eaten a Capricciosa, you may enjoy this half baked dough disc with tomato sauce on it." :p

They are not that different, are they? Themes, gameplay and activities of the games are pretty much the same, concept wise. There's a reason why it's not called "Xnorly: glarbang" (and it should have) but X:Rebirth. And I didn't say OP should not play it, I said he/she should stick to ED if he/she have played previous iterations before, as Rebirth will bring nothing new on the table appart from updated graphics, while removing many of the features that made the series special.

Granted, it's been a long while since I last played it (more like forced myself to find some sort of enjoyment out of it), so I would not know if it has drastically changed. From what I've been reading on the forums, people are still not thrilled and still calling for X4. And most are playing heavily modded versions of the game.

I think I'm just bitter about it cos I can't fly my Vidar and I miss my megafactory sectors where I hit a framerate around 10.. If I was lucky. :)

I remember actually being a bit tearful watching Rogueys 'end of an era' vid back then. I'm a 40 year old man. lol
