General / Off-Topic XBOX ONE Discussion

I really hope that Microsoft has a real bad time with their Xbone, and I hope they learn a lesson with it also, their business model of licencing software may work in the corporate world but when your dealing with the general public, Its a different ball game.

Agreed ...MS are taking a huge gamble....Like I stated before they had a Massive forum walkout when they announced no backward compatibility for games on the last xbox and it worried them enough to give in....

This time they just don't seem to care .....Its going to cost them badly this time.
Sony are going to slaughter them....Good for them I say if they are listening to their customers wishes though :)

Sony are getting a lot of mileage out of not being Microsoft. People actually cheered when they announced that their console would allow you to play games by simply sticking a disc in the console and that they will "let you" lend and sell games. What a weird and twisted world we live in when something we've been doing since consoles first came out is now considered a special unique privilege.

I'm hoping that people will look at E3 and think to themselves "Those demos for the Xbone look really tempting. I want the hardware that gets them looking that good."

As a hardcore gamer I watch every minute of the main pressers for E3, Pax, & any interim reveals, every year. One thing that stuck out quite glaringly this year was that during M$ presentation it was constant clapping and cheering at every little sentence spoken, whilst during the Sony presentation it was 99% silent until Jack Tretton announced their online/offline, used game, game lending, game selling policy.

Call me a cynic, but to me what started as viewing the cheerers at M$'s show sycophants, quickly became seeing them as paid to cheer. Whereas the Sony show felt much more honest, and like everyone was just waiting for the 'Things we're not Microsoft-ing' moment.

My only regrets so far are that I will miss Halo & Forza. Even though I am more of an RPG lover, Forza has a quality missing from Gran Turismo, and like to admit it or not Halo is a great franchise.

This an American phenomenon. It was the same every time Bush the 2nd gave a televised speech to a military audience. Didn't really matter whether what he said made sense or not, every utterance was greeted with orgasmic whooping, cheering.

I think this is why the Americans are so good at making sporting events entertaining, they are not shy about showing their enthusiasm, and it is infectious.

But the Sony Presser took place in the same location.

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft used whips and large "Cheer or Die" banners at the E3 which they were careful to keep off-camera. They've already been caught paying for positive comments on websites.

It's obvious that the news from Sony about its less draconian DRM was genuinely favourable. I was glad myself that they didn't join MS down this restrictive path. I just feel a little sad that such a basic consumer right should feel like something we should feel thankful for getting.

It's like the old joke:-

Frank Sinatra saved my life last night. I was getting beaten up outside an Italian Restaurant when he came along and said "Okay boys, I think that might be enough"

it looks like that all the Demos for the Xbone at E3 were all running on high end PC's. were all of Sony's demos were actually running on PS4 dev kits.

This if true is sad.

If a presenter says at an Xbox one conference that "This is rendered in real time" then one would naturally assume that it is done on the Xbox one. And MS have been cheeky enough to try to fool everyone while strictly not actually lying.

Yeah, same here. Not a fan of FPS, but Halo has some fairly unique stuff to keep it fresh. That said I didn't really like Halo 4 that much, so I'm not probably not going to miss the rest either.

But it's fairly common practice - what surprised me most about that news wasn't that MS were using PCs, but that Sony weren't.

I wont renew my gold subscription but will keep my Eggbox as ive got a load of arcade titles on it. ill also be keeping both PS3's as they are decent media players.

I wonder if the PS+ games that are part of the Subscription carry over to the PS4 cloud service? would be nice if they did.

another daming article

Microsoft has responded to fresh privacy concerns over a patent from 2011 that suggests Kinect 2 may be used as a form of visual DRM, should the company decide to implement such a measure in Xbox One.

ExtremeTech discovered the filing back in November, which is labelled as covering "content distribution regulation by viewing user." Theoretically, if the Kinect establishes there are more people in the room than is permitted according to the licence that users agree to when renting of purchasing content, the movie won't play.

"The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken," it reads.

According to unverified "industry sources" spoken to by MCV within the last month, this is a real thing Microsoft is planning to implement on Xbox One using Kinect 2.

Today, however, the company has responded to speculation with the following statement: "Microsoft regularly applies for and receives patents as part of its business practice; not all patents applied for or received will be incorporated into a Microsoft product."

That appears to be all the information the company is sharing for now. While there's no guarantee it's true, if it is then it's latest instance of a potentially concerning encroachment into privacy. Seeing as we already know that the Kinect 2's microphone will always be on and the new console won't function without the device, such a measure isn't out of the question.

Microsoft has, however, already told Polygon that privacy is of the utmost importance when it comes to Xbox One and Kinect. "The new Kinect is listening for a specific cue, like 'Xbox on'. We know our customers want and expect strong privacy protections to be built into our products, devices and services, and for companies to be responsible stewards of their data. Microsoft has more than 10 years of experience making privacy a top priority. Kinect for Xbox 360 was designed and built with strong privacy protections in place and the new Kinect will continue this commitment."

We've reached out to Microsoft to see if we can get any further information, though it's unlikely we'll get much. As soon as we hear, we'll be sure to update the story.

Given the apparent scope of NSA oversight of non-dom communications, why would anyone want an always-on-when-the-console-is-on Kinect sensor attached to their gaming console?

The second-user game policy and internet daily connectivity requirement are enough by themselves to put me off adding an XBOne to my console collection.

Plus the PS4 spec is not so dissimilar, some say more powerful. And the PS4 is getting an Oddworld game as stated above - ace!

I wonder if you could side-step that by turning the camera through 90 degrees to face a wall with a life-size cardboard cut-out, or a seated shop mannequin? :)

I don't see the point in the xbox one...

The whole reason consoles came in to existence was they were cheap, simple (i.e. no silly stuff like TV tuners), portable and could be used anywhere. The xbox is exactly the opposite of all those things. You might as well just buy a mid range gaming PC and have more freedom, without the over-priced accessories, xbox live fees, or the high price of console games (which you can no longer re-sell due to the always on internet DRM).

Buying the xbox is a risk really. If it doesn't sell (pre-orders are looking poor apparently, while ps4s are already set to be short of demand), it will get abandoned by developers like the Wii U was.

Maybe you could have an alcove, hidden from the watchful eyes of the Kinect Sensor, where you could write your journal.

Hold on a sec... We got PRISM. We got Kinect Sensor that must be kept switched on and connected to the internet. And we got Larry Hryb inviting Angry Joe to embrace the new future. I see where this is going. It's ironic that fitness games are so popular with Kinect consoles:-

You, Smith ! Number 6079. Comrade Winston Smith ! [WINSTON comes to shaking attention.'] You can do better than that. Your hands are barely reaching your knees.
