Guide / Tutorial Yokai's guide to rank progression (reputation) and working around the seeming bugs

I've been doing my regular trade route for eons now. Its been good for me, making ok profit, becoming Allied with the Empire and its factions, and rising up the ranks up to Knight. But last night I noticed I was no longer seeing the blue up arrows for the Empire or its minor factions, despite me doing missions for them.

So, after reading this thread, I moved to another star system, checked the bulletin board there and BOOM! A screen full of Imperial Navy rank missons! Now I'm a Lord, and one promotion away from keeping the Clipper before the big data reset on October 6th for Xbox One. And there was me thinking I simply hadn't done enough missions for that promotion. The odd thing is, when I went back to the old route those promotion missions showed up there too. Almost as if me going to a new system activated the trigger for those promotion missions to appear, regardless of location.

I guess I now have have to find another trade route since it seems I've maxed out the good will/progression from the old one. I'm also guessing that taking on some of the long range missions (and earning extra money from them) has helped somewhat. I was only Knighted last week, so I'm surprised to have risen to Lord so quickly.

At the moment I am at Serf, Im just constantly doing missions in Empire space to attempt to gain rep in my rankings, its annoying! What are the best systems/missions to do?

Also, this whole system of leveling up is just so horribly broken and vague, i'm coming to the conclusion because of reading up so much information, not to believe any of the information the game tells me. I'm gonna just do missions in a few systems and see what happens. I can't believe how stupid it is to get the Imperial ships. (And then I need to do it all over again for Federation, kill me now)

what i got from this is that you just have to waste hours on hours pn hours on hours on hours and pray as much as you can to whatever the an RGN god is.
i have gotten allied with 5-6-7-8-9 maybe 10 federal minor factions in the past 2 weeks, and have done over 200 missions and claimed bounties for minor factions that are with the federation. i am a petty officer i got this many many many months ago without trying. after they 'fixed' the super high payout missions i have not seen 1 federal promotion mission.

if this is truly how this game works then i will be done with elite dangerous, and probably just grief kids, so they quit sooner than me.

to creat a game that takes over 200 hours of game play to not get ranked up at a very low rank is a life consuming game and not enjoyable.

Q A the admin sent me here, and I'm hoping this playing more hours per day, and grinding more missions each day is a solution.

Has anyone had any luck with ranking up lately? I am midshipmen, something I got relatively easily, however I have done tons of missions at many different stations and nothing is changing.

Every minor faction I come across that is Federation, I am already Allied with, and no amount of mission turn-ins will give me a rank up mission. I have also turned in several million worth of bounties (10 - 15), and got my trade rank up to merchant strictly trading with the Federation with no change.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Having acces to 1.5 beta I'd say hold everything off until the update has come through. It seems they changed things ! Again !

Ok so now that we actually have the % gain measurable, has anybody figured out what the most time-efficient way to increase it is?

Well, if you want Imperial rank, go to Tamar - a system with 3 (maybe 4, been a while) minor empire factions. Donate a #### load of money to their charity causes. Flip between solo and open to refresh the bulletin screen, and voila - increased rank.

(If anyone else wants to chip in with Fed stations with 3 or 4 minor factions as I am ignorant of these, that'd be great)

:)

For Federation, head to 17 Draconis, I was doing the rep missions before Horizons, and ranked up to Rank 9 in about 4 days of 2-3 hour stints. Plenty of missions to haul out of there after doing the Donation missions, about on par with Robigo runs, 20-30 million depending on your hold and about 10-11 deliveries back into the known galaxy.

**UPDATE** Still getting the Donation missions AFTER Horizons, hit Rank 10 in about an hour the other night. However the delivery missions are really strange, now the cargoes are huge for a so-so payout, and you can't take more than 3 or 4 missions and will be lucky to hit 12-15 million for a full cargo run back into the known galaxy. Brought my Anaconda out there to take some of the bigger payloads, but you can't hardly take any of the missions, because they require delivery to outpost where an Anaconda can't land. :( Python is probably the best choice for a balance between payload and ability to land at outposts. Sadly I only have my trusty do-it-all Asp, and then went straight for the Anaconda, now it will be a long grind at these low rate missions to have the cash for a new Python.

Unless you have 'mission specific cargo' you can always sell the cargo you get from your missions and stack more missions. You just have to buy it on the other end of your trip. Adds a little back-and-forth, but saves the long journeys.

That's not a bad idea, I will try that tonight and see if I can not make too much of a mess of it.. ;)

quick question; does bounty hunting and conflict zones contribute to increasing your rank?
I have done a lot of bounty hunting and mercenary work, but saw no progression
yet a friend insists he managed to rank up twice in the federation, in one day, by doing NOTHING but endless bounty hunting all day
not missions even, just hazardous extraction site runs

This is all a lot to take in.

I'm new. Been playing about a week but mostly just doing extraction sites and building up money, learning game and ship mechanics and having a good time. But I want to get more serious and I want to start building Empire ranks.

I'm currently at Adams Orbital in BETA-1 TUCANAE. Combat rank is Competent. Rank with the Empire is "NONE", reputation is "Friendly". Every once in a while I'll get a "Hunt this guy" mission on the b-board. Half of them are bugged and the guy never spawns in USSs at all so those see to lead to disaster. But I haven't gotten a single Naval mission yet.

When should I start seeing these?

Naval Ascension missions won't appear until you hit 100% of the current rank progress bar. You can work on taking BB missions and they tell you how much progression (High, Medium, or Low) you will get for doing the mission. You need to take missions in Federal or Empire stations specific to those factions though. That's why we choose 17 Draconis for Federation, and Tamar or Fehu for Empire (I have better luck at Tamar...), as they seem to have the highest amount of rank progression missions or donation missions for those factions.

Naval Ascension missions usually take the path of "Find/Kill this guy" or "Search/Find" something from a wreckage, or sometimes "Smuggle this for us" or "Go find contraband for us and bring it back to this station", with the last 2types being the easiest. You won't always find KILL targets at USS, sometimes you will just see them flying in the specified sector in Supercruise, and you can Interdict them and kill them. Keep in mind, if you take missions that you fail, or can't complete, you will LOSE faction for Discarding the mission or not completing it. It's highly important that when you hit 100%, and it's time to get the Ascension mission, that you look through the available missions and take one that you know that you can complete the easiest, and ONLY take ONE mission, not all of the ones that appear on the Board that say "Naval Ascension Opportunity". You can only complete one for each rank-up.
