Elite / Frontier Your Elite Memories

Finding this site took me back to emotions.....

Hi all Elite fans. Im new here, only because i stumbled on this site while searching to check David Braben has any plans for a new version fo ELITE. Finding this site took me back to emotions, probably only you in this forum, can only understand. I am soooooo out of this world that an ELITE IV is in development for PC XBOX PS3, and hopefully Nintendo WII.

My next few words have been wanting to explode  out of me since the 80's  when i first bought elite for bbc model B, another ELITE game for 6502 tube and my new MASTER 128 which i later bought ...... Well Im in eternal love with ELITE !!!

To Mr David Braben.... Thank you for making me and my brother (back then) the happiest BBC owners on earth. We used to fantasise for such a game, but we never thought it was possible on the bbc micro (combining two screen modes to obtain the impossible was genius).

We were already proud owners of the BBC (I still have my Master 128 & 6502Tube in working order) but we could only boast with the hardware compared to the others, surely the bbc games quality was miles behind other machines like commodore, Atari and amiga...... UNTIL YOU CREATED ELITE!!! We could at last show off our bbc to others, who all loved it, some of which (even amiga owners) used to come at my place to play it. (until they bought their amiga version ofcourse)...

Well, I can never express in words, my respect for David Braben (& Ian Bell) for  emotional moments which I thought will never come back...... until I found out that ELITE IV is coming out..... wow wow wow..... THANK YOU SO MUCH DAVID... really thanks a million.

phew.... at last, hopefully I managed to communicate with Mr David Braben, something I wanted to to since the 80's.... just to thank you!!! (David)

EAGERLY WAITING FOR ELITE IV

Elite - My First Encounters

Hi all, another new recruit here,

I remember my first encounter with Elite was early in 1992 when I was 12 and round one of my friend's houses. He had Elite Plus on his Archimedes computer and to say it blew me away was an understatement. I remember not being able to get it out of my head. It was the first time that I looked at my trusty Amiga and wished it was something else!

But when an Amiga magazine called 'The One' announced Frontier: Elite 2 in late 1992 then suddenly my Amiga was back in favour.

And so began the longest wait that I had yet experienced in my short life; a whole YEAR of agonising anticipation. That's a long time for a 12 year old. Rarely a day went by without me reading through the previews I'd amassed, trying desperately to wring out any extra detail of the game that I could.

Frontier was released in October 1993 a few of days before my birthday and I VIVIDLY remember falling to knees cheering when my dad returned home holding it. Those last days knowing it was in the house but having to wait for my birthday was excruciatingly exciting.

Not before nor since have I felt so strongly about a game. I know that the day that Elite IV is released that I will no doubt be experiencing similar emotions all over again.

It's been said countless times before in this forum and elsewhere, but I'd like to thank David Braben and Ian Bell for creating such an awe inspiring game in Elite, and to David for continuing to expand it in such ground breaking ways.

I was exceptionally late in coming to the Elite party.

I first saw it being offered on the cover of "Amstrad Action" for the CPC in the mid-90s, and I instantly knew that I wanted to get it. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be, as I didn't have the cash for the magazine that day. 2 days later, I went back in, and the magazine was gone, and I never found another copy.

I went through playing a few rip-off games, such as "Enterprise", always wanting more, but never getting it.

Eventually, I cobbled together a PC out of scrap that wasn't even good enough to run Windows 98 (due to a teensy Hard Drive, although it ran DOS well enough). Around this time, FE2 got released on the "PC Utilities" magazine's coverdisc, with FFE being released 2 months later in the same magazine. I grabbed both coverdiscs, and used a friend's PC to transfer everything to floppy discs to transfer to my PC. I initially found FFE's learning curve way too steep, so I spent a year or so playing FE2 before moving over.

Eventually, I had upgraded my FE2 ship to a Panther Clipper, which was rigged out enough to trade safely in the anarchy systems - usually without needing any repairs. Once I reached this point (I haven't checked the save file in some time, but I think I was ranked, "Deadly", I moved onto FFE.

I read about first, and managed to get a lot of money with medicine runs & the Wicca Ware race. I never did get the Thargoid ship legitimately, however. I did, however, use shipmod hacks to get to the furthest Thargoid system required to do the thargoid mycoid mission (bypassing the "Quest ship" missions), and got the thargoid ship that way. I've recently restarted a game with the intention of doing things legitimately this time.

Yep, that's right - I'm still replaying FE2 and FFE.

Most recently of all, however, I managed to get Quirky's port of Elite on the DS. A great use for the flashcard. It's taking me some time to get used to the "rotational" style controls...

I'm not sure.. But when I fire up the old BBC at my muothers house with the old Black and white TV ... (and hehehe a dual floppy drive) That will bring back some memories.. But as I was rather young when it came out ... I think what I remember best was when I found out to get a clean dock.. fly in to the sun first .. or when I got enough cash for the military lazer.

I think I might try revs as well soon.. lol
But I have to read up on how to run the damn games as I havent played elite since on my amiga 500

What a great thread! I first played Elite on my Acorn Electron aged about 8 (while my mum looked on, completely baffled, wanting to play Repton instead!)
The thrill of the first time you manage to dock.. or the tension when you enter a dangerous system, fighting pirates all the way to the space station.. superb. I'd hate to think how much time I spent on that game... What I didn't like though was when I finally saved up enough credits for a galactic hyperdrive, pressed the button to activate it.. and nothing happened! Oh sorry, theres only 1 galaxy on the Electron version, it doesn't work! Also, no special 'mission,' no thargoids, etc. I soon began to look at my friends c64 with envy!

Fast forward a few years and I got Frontier on the Amiga. After a few months of playing it I actually nagged my parents to get me an accelerator card/maths coprocessor for my 1200 (an expensive bit of kit at the time) I told them I needed it for 'rendering and graphics stuff' but I actually only wanted it so Frontier would run a bit smoother!

Does anyone else remember a sort of cheat/bug in Frontier? - it allowed you to travel between any 2 systems in just 2 jumps. Can't quite remember how I did it, but I figured out if you kept scrolling across the galaxy for ages and ages, the fuel requirement or distance to jump there would reset back to a low number, and you could jump to this incredibly distant system. You would then scroll all the way back to the regular systems and you could jump back..

So if you wanted to go all the way from one of the federation systems straight to the other side of the Imperial systems you would pick a point roughly equidistant between the 2, then scroll to the right for ages and ages until you found the sweet spot you could jump to, jump there, then jump to the planet you want to get to. It was great for delivering packages on time :)

I believe you're thinking of the old "wormhole" bug - One of the better-loved unintended features of the game. I'm sure you're one of those people that found out about the negative value for the gemstones on the earlier releases of Frontier : Elite 2...

What a great thread! I first played Elite on my Acorn Electron aged about 8 (while my mum looked on, completely baffled, wanting to play Repton instead!)

I had this same issue, except that I would find my mother playing Repton when I got home from school, I had to wait for her to go and make tea before I got chance to jump on the computer :)

My first encounter with Elite was at a friends house when I was about 13 or 14. His mum was teacher and relatively well off, so they had a BBC Micro and a copy of Elite to play with.

We spent hours hunched over the keys, trying to make the most money and get back home without being blown to smithereens by pirates or cops. We used to take turns at doing runs into the planet, usually with me doing the docking as I had no problems getting into stations.

I still remember with terrible clarity the time we were heading into Reesdice with a full load of dirt cheap Narcotics, about to make an absolute fortune on the deal. We had been dogged by the police all the way, not firing on us but following us in so we couldn't use the jump drive. We'd stuck with it for half an hour and were almost at the station when I pressed the button to see what the market price was. Pow! Off goes the escape pod and we lose everything because I'd hit the next key along. I never heard the end of it.

My first memory of this game.

My dad used to used to teach computing with Commodore 64's in the 80s so I was very lucky to have one in my house at a very early age. I remember him with the computer on the dinning table with a little portable black and white TV with his fresh copy of Elite. He played for hours eventually reaching the station at his first destination Diso where he died trying to land. Several more hours later he was still no closer to landing.

My bed time came as I was only about 5 or 6 at the time, leaving my dad on the computer trying to land.
I woke up early like all young children do and went to play on the computer and throught I would play that game my dad was playing. I pop in the floppy load"*",8,1 and wait for it to load.
I set off from Lave to Dico. After watching my dad struggle for hours I at least knew the major buttons, H to hyper space, J to jump.
I reached the station and spent probably 30 mins trying to find the door and allign up to it. I didn't know at the time that the station door always pointed to the planet, infact i was a few years after that I realised it. Actually I think it was only when I finally read the manual I found this out.

My first attempt I got lined up but died. :(

So tried again. I got to the station and spent about 15 mins finding the door and alligning when my dad came down and noticed what I was doing.
He started do some probing questions trying to work out if I had been up all night playing Elite. But no this was my second attempt.

It was not a nice landing, I remember that awful scratching sound when you are not lined up correctly and you are too close to the door so you cant see it, you dont have any reference what direction you need to go. YOu just have to hope for the best.
After a few seconds of awful sound and me randomly pressing directions I landed.

The shock on my dad's face realising his 5 year old son has just landed on his 2nd go and he spent nearly all night and couldn't do it.

Needless to say my dad never played it again, but I was hooked.

Like many, I found Elite in the school computer room. I was maybe about 11 or 12 and "bigger boys" were playing this new game on the BBCs that had disc drives that they'd hog. I got to watch generally and occasionally manage to book some time on those particular BBCs, but the older students had priority.

Then my dad, being a teacher, got a BBC Model B as the family computer, and of course I ended up hogging it as my own :D. We just had a cassette deck at the time so managed to get the cassette version and played it endlessly.

A while later we got a disc drive and I bought the updated disc version (launched then by Superior?), which had the BBC B disc and Master versions.

When I went to Uni I got an Archimedes (A5000), and got the Arc version which truly is the best version I'd ever played.

Still got the original novella on my shelves, and I can still today pick up a version of Elite and do the manual docking process almost blindfold :D

rollotomasi (great nickname!)
somewhere here or on ssc i posted the old pc version of frontier, including the wormhole bug (or the replacement file i'm not shure).
there is also a list of wormhole routes on frontierverse.
i have made one very expandet based on that i posted here once to, i guess i should implement it to my site, even if it's a rough list and hard to read to find all the target systems, once i hade made a html version of the table i used for the list but i have to install access or excel first to revive the table and the html form, it's not a perfect one, but you can select by target systems at least and it will show you the right jumppoint, i guess i asked once for help but get no answer, so far. it would be really nice to have a online table which also could be edited by users on a second form, in a safe way (if you use access form it's very dangerous you can loose important data, when you edit a old entry by accident)

further, even on frontierverse you'll find a mhole calculator, which helped me to find all the jump points in my table.

a little hint for the mhole calc. try to use allways the cross result of what the calculator exports, e.g.
1st x and 2nd y or 1st y and 2nd x, usually you will find the jump systems better this way, also you can say the more exact your entered data is the better the result, to get the integer values of the systems in FE2 you can use a game genie or similar program which allows you to control/view the adresses for location in the running program.
it will look then like this (abandoned list i found somewhere on my hd)
Code:

it differs somewhat from the general coordinate system used for mhole calculation, because i counted the inter sector coordinates from lower left corner like the game does, but the common way used is to assume center of sector is 0 and that's why i stopped it.

FE2 blacklist

FE2 blacklist
------------

it's far from beeing complete but at least a start

Code:
avoid missions in these systems or follow advice

name position	planet object reason

Ioarqu (C) 1.90 -2.80	Cambridge	Imperial base	very far (500 AU) no speceport

								aproach to reach base

Candaess (E) 2.54, -3.85 Coates mine	Imperial base	no mass reading of planet

ackandso 11, then zoom & rotate
								until you find ackandso 12

Intiol (E) 1.90, -4.00	Intiol E3c	Imperial	300 AU no mass reading of planet
						Interrogation	flying base nearly unreachable
Centre point to base when visible
use autopilot to get as close as
								possible (3x > 2x > 1x)
								then aproach manually

Liamiess (A,B1) 1.20, -5.75	Liamiess A,B1e	Imperial	150 AU far from central system
Listening	Planet has extreme heavy mass
						Station cannot reach without crash
								impossible to film station
								maybe bombing if you dare

Achenar 0.95, -4.15	Achenar 10c	Imperial	very far from central star
Weapons about 650 AU takes a lot
						Factory of time and fuel

Behoqu 2.10, -4.40	Behoqu 7	Imperial	heavy mass planet, could be
Listening	some kind of weapon ?
						Station nearly impossible to reach
aproach > 50000 km over station
								then turn ship around and
								get close as possible with
								engaged forward thrusters
								needs some experience

the so called "flying bases" can be busted yes, but needs a lot of experience and even more patience
aproach as i described it, then fire your missile when you reach the closest piont possible to the base, you will recognize the base is allways "jumping" 10-100 km away from you when you get to close, so do it very carefully.
aligne your ship to the base exactly, so that the missile don't has to make any turn to reach the target, sometimes she hits, most time not and will fly through the target several times until the time is running out and it self destructs, if she didn't hits the first time straight she will never, i guess it's because stations over zero mass planets have also a zero mass and the missile can only hit "real" targets, but sometimes it works out, when she's really straight hitting the target before it can flip away from you. therefore you will have to manage your speed manually so that you can get real slow real close, no mass means no relative speed to target! you really have to fly well.
reconnaisance missions are a bit easier on such targets and you can get your experience with them first.

hyperdrive theory

accidentially i stumbled over this,

Urgent Message

from diploma engineer Hans Kalup, member of Terrestric Fleet.
At this time present on Terra

To the historians on Mars

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen

I don't know how much other pseudo-scientists or historians think they know about Hyperspace Drive or the Warp effect.

The Warp Drive is based on the theory, that the Einsteinian space-time continuum can be distortet by high masses (like
superheavy neutrino-stars build up a gravity-lens), as well with the equivalent energy efford.
This leads to the idea, that you can with a suitable mass-projector, pull the target space nearby and you can reach it
at a moderatly low speed, without beeing envolved to relativistic time smear.

In Fact, the Warp-Drive is indeed a impossibility, because the energy consumption, even for a small ship, will be
exceedingly high. In order to clarify this; it would need the same energy one star like the sun produces in its
whole lifetime!

And now for Hyperspace-Jumps. Owing to my inexorable urge after new solutions, i encountered more coincidentally
the fact that outside of the 4-dimensional universe exists a n-dimensional universe. It can be stated little over this
n-dimensional universe, except which "in" it used physics does not prevail and all coordinates are the same, no matter
how far it was away for us from each other distance.

In order to imagine that figurativy; one assumes that the universe is an inverted sphere, following this picture
"outside" of this sphere each place is equivalent far from the other one. One steps now into this timeless space
the "real" universe moves on, this effect can one use to jump from one place in the "real" universe to the other
and it is only a matter of time where one with the reentry arrives.
The energy expenditure resulted now therefore on the duration into which the ship must be hold in Hyperspace.
How that works out exactly i will, for understandable reasons, guards to abandon.

The course must forwards withdraws from the "real" universe to be in every detail computed, because it is not
possible to navigate in Hyperspace and it happens that one reenters at a totally different place than meant (Miss-Jumps).

Therefore I work on a possibility, instead of jumping into the Hyperspace of developing it artificially around the ship
as it were as negative Hyperspace, which results in a substantially larger range and one can navigate further in used way,
there the "real" universe then is still attainable (visible). I will call this drive "Linear-Drive", but that is still
future music, because I am by far not yet finished with my work in addition.

Yours sincerely, Hans Kalup

XIII Wormhole Routes

In this table, sector coordinates are interpreted relative to the integer coordinates of a sector center(the intersection of the faintly colored lines). Therefore the sector [0, 0] has the corners [-0.5, 0.5], [0.5, 0.5], [0.5, -0.5] and [-0.5, -0.5]. Furthermore the coordinates [-0.7, 1.3] are located in sector [-1, 1]. I am sure that for many jumps better jump points can be found, but this little navigation library already helps me a lot. It gets continuously updated. (when?, who?)
