Gilo

I never played Elite or it sequels.
I am 40
We gamed as kids on ATARI 2600 and we had a Sinclair ZX81 mostly I foold around with BASIC.

But didn't go further with that. After that no PC no console.
Until my dad police force went from typewriter to PC. And he want to have a had start. So Our first 80386S 25HZ VGA.
Start Gaming agian and was into Air combat sims my first was F19
Somewhere down the road I discoverd this genre with Privateer.
But to me it to way back I only rimember I liked it.
Did Freelancer to. But the game who is most fresh to me in memory is X3 Terran conflict.

What I do know is that Elite is old and use dated GFX.
But a little gameplay review of ELite comparing it with X3TC would be nice to get a better IDea about it.
Or is Derek Smart's Universal Combat bit closer to Elite. Wich I didn't play either.

and i am 43

if you ask me as a complete fanatic, there is nothing that can compare to elite or in my case Frontier.

i guess the magic is not a supergrafic, there was better when frontier was released, was they better? imo no, you cant compare frontiers pure vector grfx with the quad "polys" of WC, i like the vector more especially on closeups, they might be less detailed but allways sharp compared to the first try's in WC 3D style, which didn't exists no more.
nowadays all use real 3D objects like elite allready did, even if they was very low detailed. the other system used also for the classic 3D ego shooter Doom (i might be wrong) i never liked because in a close view things turned to this quads get blurred. in amigas demo scene the "WC system" lived a little further, but i guess no one produces any 3D in this way no more.

pah, those days people came up a said this and that game had a supergrfx but most was sprite based and very bad animated, is a grafic good only because i can see it is James Bond? but when that guy moves like in a cheap japanese cartoon with two sprites for the movement i must say vector grfx are 1000 times better and animations are allways as fluid as it your machine allows.

but i guess i was on a loosing street, it was my choice back in the 80's to stay behind intellivisions poor grafix, was they poor? only (same reason) you can see Rocky Bilboas Face had a Black eye after the fight on coleco? but they was animated in a absolute stupid way, while the inty running man moves in 16! directions and the animated little blocks they used for him have 32 states for a complete movement 32! not 2.
but like allways the masses found the stills better than a fluid movement as long as they can see their heros face.
from this point on "movies" became more important in games rather then good animations or even less important a good gameplay, but im a complete outsider i know.

the gameplay is unique, i guess even if i don't know many other (i played a little XWA and of course WC in the very beginning, but after i played Frontier the first time it couldn't fascinate me no longer), i'm such addicted to Frontier. but foremost it's the open playfield you have, no limits, no given storyline or missions you have to do or to win else the galaxy is lost.
this concept has been picked up by many others but i guess none is as deep as frontier.
almost the whole game is procedural genarated, that means a extreme large galaxy, and many things beside of what you see will take influence the game.
e.g. if you buy a laser gun for your ship, you didn't simply buy one class, it might look that way but each class of laser guns has 8 classes in fact, so it depends on the tech level of the system (you can't see that either) and on your reputation what equipment you get. this gives the game this depth many find Frontier is unique for.

and of course (you can see it at my avatar) there is no Spaceship looking better then a Imperial Courier. only the intro and the Courier made me allready fell in love with it.

what a long list of machines :D !

btw, is there any other game that has a "wormhole" bug ? still i don't believe fully it's a bug, because how else can you travel the galaxy, to me it allways was like a "secret" function.

never mind

never mind
ask a man that lost his wife and children (not really lost, they're not dead just out of reach)

:D

what could happen more worse in my life?
i guess nothing!

beeing whacked up by 4 police officers sometimes, is a lot harder to stand.

(still i can't feel my left thumb well, because of the handcuffs and its two months ago now)

long long time ago, I was about 10 I read about Elite coming up for my Amstrad CP something and got it for easter.

Since I went on a tour with my family I read the manual from front to back and reverse in the backseat already glooming of fantasies about how it would be not only watching heroes (ST:TOS) in space but becoming one of them in this game.

The ride was long but the following nights and days (I played asleep often, when parents checked) were longer. Even my ten years older brother got engaged in Elite and we had quite a lot fun.

Imagine "only" vector-graphics...!
It's been the best.

I played all of them, but usually for reasons that were important as school, never complete.

If a new Elite would come up, it would be the only thing to play and make it epic and open as possible. Please!

All the best from Germany!

The Threads here and the ammount of ppl always looking at the Elite-Forums gives me a good feeling that we once will see a new Elite on our Screens.

Many ppl just say the same as I would, so I keep it short:
Elite (incl. its later releases) is still on the top of my top10 List I've ever played.

I've seen "Imperium Strikes Back" in the cinema with ~11, playing Lego moon-base after that constantly.

A bit later in time I worked 2 Weeks for a VC20, Lego was not the favourite anymore. 2 Years later I got my C64 and finally Elite which was my own giant leap ;-)

good old days
greetings to all Elite-freaks out there

25 years, I'm so old now!

I bought this on cassette for C64, played and played it, got sick of waiting for loads and saved my paper-run money for a 1541 drive and disk version of the game.

I was so obsessed (there's no other term for it) that I kept written logs for my travels, trades and kills on wide line-printer paper. I wish I knew where they ended up....

Elite (along with Bruce Lee, Uridium and Paradroid) made me want to be a games developer. Wonderful stuff.

2001 is on TV now and the Schönen Blauen Donau sent me on this trip down memory lane. :)

I remember first playing Elite on my schools' BBC Micro; I wasn't very impressed, not enough time to explore and too young.

I remember the day I got Amiga Frontier; reading the Gazetteer, opening the hardcopy map, then opening the galactic map and being stunned by just how much could be crammed on one DD floppy.

I remember when I first heard the wind at Sirocco Station.

I remember the first time I forgot to buy atmospheric shielding.

I remember the fist time I got jumped by an Imp Courier; I WANT THAT SHIP

I remember my first million trading slaves to Facece.

I remember Phobos messing with my Grand Landing Tour of the solar system

I remember first discovering a Far System.

I remember becoming Elite.

I remember being disappointed with FFE's broken missions.

I remember being disappointed by Freelancer.

I remember wondering about Elite IV.

I remember being disappointed by I-War.

I remember wondering about Elite IV.

I remember being disappointed by X.

I remember giving up on Elite IV.

I agree with (and experienced) everything you said in your post, except for the last point you made. Dont give up hope just yet, it's just a matter of faith ;)

First to play

Ian Bell was one of my closest friends growing up. We hung out discussing our geeky love of The Prisoner and Blakes's 7 and ( I kid you not) Dallas.

I recall Ian's early computer games like Freefall and the unsold but brilliant Sea Cull (Ian couldnt understand why publishers felt that game was a little uncommercial although in fairness the gameplay was spot on) and I was priviledged to see Elite in a very early development version and also got to play test itat various stages.

Ian was a cool guy with some very diverse tastes in music and literature. His family was also really nice (his mum gave me a lift into school for an exam when I crashed on my bike) and I was saddened to hear his father died earlier this year - he was a gentleman.

I met Ian last year and he struck me as quite a shy person. Certainly not like David Braben who seemed to be more outgoing. Both nice blokes though :)

I wore out 3 ZX Spectrum rubber keyboards playing Elite before i hit Elite, only version i managed it in back in the day.

It started me off on spacesim games, never looked back really. Being the first in the genre, it's funny how so many later games that became popular also have features that can point back to Elite, 3D radar, fuel useage, travelling from planet to planet trading and so on. Wonderful game.

I still love Elite---

I still love Elite, but lost my copy some years back when I divorced. I wish I could get a copy again and see if I could get it to play on my new PC with Windows 7. I did get it to play under Win XP.
My biggest memory was when I was fighting a Thargoid and managed to destroy it and it's babies. I ended up in somewhere in space far from everything. The good thing was I had unlimited everything and invulnerable. The bad thing was, when I saved I was back to normal when I played again. Even tho I started from that save point.
Has anyone else ever had that happen to them? The quirk of being invulnerable.

Supreme Commanders Bell & Braben!

I want worshipfully thank You for opening the Universe! For countless hours (maybe months) and light years that I've already spent in the cockpit of my own Cobra MkIII 'Icaros' since 2002. For thousands of battles, near-death conditions, thrill, adrenaline... escapes from witch-space...

Now I am Elite Plus Commander, Archangel with over 1.8 MegaCredits and 60081 Confirmed kills! I've a photographic proof of that message when I lose my 'Elite' status at 60081 hits. There is no 'Top Elite' status in Elite Plus, so I think it was some kind of 'memory overflow situation' in achieved hit point counter. Not yet in 9th galaxy, but 6 missions are accompleshed. Still flying. From here to eternity.

Repairing Nav comp error at Errius! :)

Sincerely yours,

Archangel Nothoria Infama (from Lave/Finland)

ps. Forgive my lousy english.

Today, i woke up and thought it´s time to remember the old days of Elite :) So i signed up for this forum and here we go:
I can hardly remember the year i started as "Commander Jameson". It must be somewhere around 1986/1987 on a Amstrad/Schneider CPC 464. Green Monitor Unit and the game on Tape which took ages for loading. I can remember getting the cloaking device from a Thargoid Ship in Hyperspace...and about not knowing how to activate it :) I loved playing Elite on the Commodore Amiga some years later because of it´s sound and graphic abilities. Think it was buggy there but the feeling was great. But - the only system i reached Elite Status was the CPC 464. I also remember being a little bit dissapointed cause nothing really special happened when i became Elite. No welcome fireworks when i returned to Lave :)
I also loved Frontier on the PC. Of course it wasn´t exactly what i´ve expected, but it kept me busy for a while. Wish there would be a sequel or remake...like so many others. Thinking of the beautiful ship designs...yes, i think it´s time to get Oolite on my Mac. To catch up with some memories :)

Elite 48k Speccy, 128k+, Amiga, CD32, Motorola A920

Soooo many fond memories of Elite, doing the Leesti to Diso run to build up credits, being daring entering Targoid space to cheekily scoop up Thargons without being blown to bits.

I still remember using a genlock on my brothers Spectrum 48k and 128+ and hearing the bleeping lasers. Absolutely blown away watching my brother's upgrade to the Amiga, listening to the Blue Danube and actually seeing other ships in the station as the auto pilot docked . Watching the Thargoid document mission was and still is a rush.

Only a couple of years ago, I was playing the original Elite on my Motorola A920 mobile phone using White Cloud Software's spectrum emulator. Was even better playing on that then the Speccy. Thargoids rock! Had and loved the CD32 Frontier game :D

Hi Fuzzy Tomcat
Welcome to the forum :)
Yea, it great to see the classic elite running on such things as mobile phones, would be nice if Frontier Developments would do a proper release of the game for the mobile market
Speaking of emulation, I got the CD32 version of frontier running on my old XBox via UAE. Must see about getting Elite on it too.

I was at college when Elite was released (showing my age now) and I managed to scrape together £14.95 to buy the BBC cassette version - a disk drive was out of the question.

Once I'd figured out how to dock I played the game to death, often missing college as a result. Well, Elite was much more interesting than A-level maths :D
Wow, that's amazing! Someone shared exactly the same experience as me! To the extent that they wrote exactly the same post! (#5 in the thread) What are the chances??
