Just got Sky Fibre Optic installed today. Download currently is 35 mbps, although they say the speed will ramp up over the next few days. Promised max is upto 48 mbps.

At the moment I'm connecting my desktop via an O2 pre-pay mobile broadband dongle... (and I'm not even in a 3G area - if I move the dongle 3 inches, I lose the 3G signal...)

The joy of living outside of a major city :(

The highest I've got is 89mbs in Bristol on my phone near the centre. Out where I live it's only 36mbs indoors (with 1 bar). :)

These are my own personal experiences:

Using Virgin at present and it is simply incredible, great customer service and its been a dream in comparison to other providers, yeah paying a little bit more but now on fibre and its freaking awesome.

Had a poor experience with BT in the past, and an even worse one with Talk Talk. Talk talk was cheap mind and if you are not dependent on a very reliable connection its worth considering but I do offer a warning.. Should things go wrong, you end up calling an Indian based call centre who do nothing but read from a script, they are utterly useless in resolving problems, often insulting, and when calling them for the 50th time and they start from the script again I can tell you, you are going to freak out.

Ah you, they direct you to India? In my country, they directs us to the Maghreb. I assure you, they are equally incompetents

Am in the process of changing to BT Infinity from Be.

The estimated speed in about 39 down and 6 up.

My business is in telecoms and we supply both lines and broadband - we don't deal with residential (don't need the hassle) but I could supply my own broadband.

But it makes more sense to keep the line with BT retail then there is one port of call if there are technical issues.

I know first-hand how "challenged" BT can be and a broadband service provider will always blame the line provider (and vice versa) if they are separate.

Finally got my fibre connection up today. Only 5 months delayed, but speed is ok.

It should eventually settle at 50/50 when my ISP has done final adjustments, but right now it's magic.

Edit: Best ping to London. (Other servers had better bandwidth, up to 215 Mb/s, ping varied from 31 to 45 ms.)

I think the UK is still 3 or 4 years off this kind of speed :( Assuming the big players sort out our infrastruture.

Apparently a "twisted pair" is still "fine"

Big players? You mean BT? ;)

And on a Cambridge-based cable connection....

Manx telecom's internet has dropped in quality since the rollout of VDSL over here, I'm more than sure they stripped our lines to give more bandwidth to the new ones, as I was on an average 16000 kb/s down previously.

Not great but should be adequate for play although large game file downloads are a total pain. I hope there is an option to get a games disk posted out...

Am green with envy (or maybe something contagious) , Like many others I am in a rural area with miles of overhead copper between me and a service/comms cabinet let alone the exchange.

Still wouldn't give up the view or the game that wanders through my garden:)

ps :have no idea why Maidenhead is always lowest ping on test,as are several test servers closer to me
