I have been very active in the past in both the terrarium & aquarium hobby (I now do it as a job) and I once had way more species and set ups.
At my height I had 30 active terraria and 16 active aquaria and I kept many species of gecko's, lizards, chameleons, mantids, stick insects, scorpions, beetles, whip spiders, etc...

Lygodactylus williamsi which I bred years ago

I'm officially jealous, as I can barely convince my fam to let me have a 2nd tank

He is a Norwegian Elkhound! Avietar, nobody in RL ever guesses right, they're not very common here in Australia.
I'm something of a walking dog breed encyclopedia 😅 Oh well, gotta see the humor in the weird breed guesses. My white Swiss shepherd got golden retriever, husky, wolf (for real), wolfdog, one drunk guy swore it was a sheep (that was the best, we went along with it and explained how we went through a lot of effort to leash train our sheep).

I'm sure with future borzoi, we'll get a lot of "What is that?", "is that a dog or a deer?", longhaired greyhound??, Afghan hound, calf, "what a weird dog", and of course "that's the ugliest dog I've ever seen". I'm already prepared to answer that last comment with "Your mom."

I've never heard of those. Very nice breed. I love the fur color

Nice. My dog looks like a bear and she knocks me down when she jumps up on me (I guess I'm asking for it because I tend to get her too excited and she starts to wrestle my hands🤣)

It is fun to have multiple tanks but it can also become very demanding after a while. :)
Oof. They came into your country illegally.
Actually no, kakarika's are the only new zealand bird I know of that is legal to keep in Europe.
While they are listed as CITES appendix I worldwide they fall under a special CITES regulation in the European Union (CITES appendix X).
Appendix X is for animals that normally fall under CITES appendices I or II but because they are kept and bred in large numbers in captivity in the EU they are considered to have a low risk of being imported illegally.
Let us not forget that these birds have been kept as pets since the 19th century.

It's illegal to export them from New Zealand privately, along with all our native species. Unless they're generational from a much, much earlier breeding group that somehow entered the private trade, they didn't leave this country by legal means.

He just said that they arnt from new zealand but from europe, because they allready where far spread as pets before any kinds of bans where implemented.
You dont need to illegally import something when there are certified breeders in your country, because they are an established pet species.

Haven't got any pets at all currently. While I have had quite a variety of animals in the past (a hamster, freshwater fish, African giant snails and a variety of native invertebrates), my favourites are still my lizards.

First, my favourite boy, Rex the green anole. Unlike any of the other anoles I kept, he was incredibly friendly and would happily sit on the back of my hand when I was on the laptop. He would also take food from the hand and liked being stroked and tickled on the neck. I'm not sure if I'll ever go back into keeping lizards, simply because I don't think any could ever hold a candle to the rapport I had with Rex.

The lady of the dream-team was Naga, a long-tailed grass lizard. She was a bit more standoffish, but didn't mind weaving between your fingers for brief periods. Although not particularly colourful, they are such characterful little lizards that I could not help but love them. At one point she also had a mate and they laid eggs (although they didn't hatch); anyone who thinks lizards are dumb unfeeling creatures did not see those two together - they would sleep curled around one another in their favourite plastic plant.

Finally there was my blue-tailed gliding lizard. I ended up naming him Houdini, as he once flew out of his terrarium over my shoulder, ran under my bedroom door and squeezed under the skirting board, all just a couple of days before I left on a trip to Costa Rica. Fortunately, while I was away my brother managed to recapture him. Unlike Rex and Naga, Houdini was absolutely unhandleable and would bite like a devil whenever I caught him up to clean out his terrarium. Still, I absolutely adored him.

ziggycardon - do you have a sponsored Zoo? - how on earth do you afford all the food and how much land do you have - it's awesome - you looking after so many beautiful animals - I'm so impressed at your compassion and kindness - thanks for the amazing photos - regards

No he didn't. He said there are captive breeding populations in Europe.
You are right in saying that it is illegal to export species from New Zealand.
You are wrong in saying these birds entered Europe illegally, these birds have been kept and bred in Europe before New Zealand implemented any export bans. Like I said, these birds have been bred in captivity in Europe for almost 200 years.
Going by your logic bearded dragons and blue tongue skinks are also illegal since they come from Australia which also bans the export of native reptile even though the foreign captive populations have been established long before said ban.

Thank you!
Well I work in the pet trade so I can easily get everything I need for these animals :)
Regarding space, I had 2 rooms dedicated to my animals but since I spent a lot of time doing animal husbandry at work I took some steps back with keeping animals at home (stopped with keeping insects and many aquaria) so I currently have one room dedicated to my terraria and the other is currently my fossil museum room. For the rest we have a pasture at our house for the farm animals. :)
