Your Questions Needed - Join the Elite Tutorial Livestream - Everything You Need to Know About Exploration

Michael could you comment on your feelings about the Distant Worlds expedition, how it has been felt around the office, and how it has changed the game?

Are there any plans to add the missing moons in Sol?
Sag A* is missing many of its orbiting stars.
What plans are there to refine the galactic forge?(accretion disks, pulsar's,supernova, proto star's)

So just 1 base completely isolated 20,000Ly away from anything else? That actually makes less sense.
Makes perfect sense to me. I'd build an outpost 40-50k Ly away next to a nice earthlike if the mechanics existed to do such a thing.

Plans to make stars better?

And to clarify I mean:

I really want to know when the whole star will make light and not just the point in the center.

As for stars eating other stars and stars that should be flatter and such, that would be cooler but too hard probably, but maybe right?

Haven't had a chance to read all the questions, so will just ask.

When are we getting the Orrey Map for systems??? ;) ;) I know it doesn't really pertain to everything you need to know bout splorin,... but still...........please. :)

Response on the livestream was that it's still on the wishlist.

This post seems relevant from another post on another thread but the core comments remain but with a "we want it" aspect on the Orrey map.

Now, that's not to say the ideas generated are not great, not in the slightest. But I think it's worth remembering that the choices we make as developers, by and large, are on purpose.

It's normally not possible, nor desirable, to change things wholesale. Not to say that it will never happen, but I do see lots of posts containing comments like, "I don't understand why the developer's don't just change X to Y", where changing to Y, in reality, constitutes a vast amount of time and cost, and when X often does exactly the job it's meant to, which happens to be undesirable to some folk. Or, alternatively, where X has a problem that can be addressed in a much simpler manner than by switching to Y.

In addition, sometimes concepts seem a lot easier to implement than is actually the case, normally due to technical reasons (don't worry, this can hit design as easily as forum posters!). Unfortunately in these cases it's not always possible or reasonable to go into the details.

[key sentence here:] Another point I've probably made before, is that development on such a large and complex game as Elite: Dangerous is a slow process, regardless of how hard we work at it. This means that a lot of the time, when the forums have dev interactions (and this certainly applies to my own posts) the concepts discussed are often a fair way off, and potentially liable to schedule/decision changes (which is why you'll always see me writing my standard caveat of: no guarantee, no ETA).

Just remember that discussing more distant options does not mean that the team is focused on them. Normally it's quite the opposite: there are loads of things being worked on right now that someone like myself does not talk about; such things cannot usually benefit from discussion as they're too far along, which also makes discussing them more the job of other departments who can coordinate information far better than I can :).

So, following on from this, it hopefully becomes a little clearer that when I post with concepts for discussion, it is generally the right time, because feedback *can* be taken into account. Of course, this should not be confused with the idea that we'll just change things willy-nilly as folk request, so when you see something in game that you don't like, you can blame us, not the community - we make the calls and carry the can.

Hi Michael,

thanks for answering my question about the percentage of scanned systems first! Good to know we are still far away from 1% :) And yes, you got the pronunciation of my name right ;)

I liked the livestream in general and loved how Michael teased some stuff that might come, but I also thought it was great how he couldn't really tell the credit obsessed Ed how much cash individual scans yield. :D Have to admit I sympathise with Michael here and think other stuff is much more intriguing about exploration than getting rich ;)

Also nice how excited Ed was about the DW expedition - thanks for mentioning it multiple times!

Looking forward to the transcribed answers from Michael in this thread!

Some interesting points for those who haven't watched the video (spoilered in case you want to watch it)

- They hinted it's going to be dangerous to explore without weapons (dun..dun..DUNNNNN!) without mentioning any kind of reason or timeline.
- Outfitting screen is being re-done as part of the 2.1 update.
- There will likely be new things to do/map in future (such as perhaps mapping planetary surfaces) without having to travel way out to find 'virgin' systems to tag.
- There are some plans for gas giants.. but they're not saying what.
- POI distribution being changed, new (natural) POI types being added.
- More hazards when exploring.
- New materials being added (hinted at boosted jump ranges - I assume this is for permanent boosts as opposed to Jumponium).

To be clear, I do exploration because I don't want fight and I hate interdictions. If weapon is made mandatory in exploration, it sucks.
I'am happy with my asp. I d'ont want armed her.

Interdiction is boring I agree

I have a subtle feeling that it won't be interdictions. More along the lines of dragged out of hyperspace by an octagonal ship...

Whilst I agree with you about the exploration being quiet in the stream he said you'd at least have to have defensive capabilities. So I'd say A rated thrusters and shields (also helps for planet landings) and maybe a chaff launcher and you should be golden...
As long as it's a rare event and not more than once every hour or so I'll be ok with it.

As has been said I don't think we are talking about human interdiction!

Yes, the suggestion you will need to protect yourself in the deep worries me... It worries me as much as Michael's reference to "human Pirates" outside the bubble blowing other CMDRs up. How are these individual PIRATES? What aspect of what they are doing is PIRACY? Hmmm... So will the new threat to explorers come from NPC pirates now appearing out in the deep to mindlessly blow explorers up for the lolz too?

The talk of gas giants was interesting... Maybe huge electrical storms or the like to witness?

POIs being made more sensible. He actually referenced my question for this, so I get ten points! Thank God they're going to me made more sensible!

And the new materials I assume is Engineers being able improve your FSD and thus increase jump ranges maybe? I hope this is subtle and not stupid... I'm not a fan of the new materials and synthesis mechanic. Seems just too much like a mindless grind to achieve something.

Thanks to FDev for doing these streams, I love seeing and hearing your excitement and passion for the game, it's very infectious.

Thanks also for the teasers!

If i remember well David BRABEN in one of these Dev updates, Gas Giant should be scoopable.
Found this interesting at 5:00 ;)

Data Piracy was tabled a while ago. I can't wait to hear the howls of outrage from the people already asking for the big diapers of exploration drones, recoverable black boxes, and antennas to automagically transmit your data back.
