Post Your Support for Elite Odyssey to have VR Support.

Star Wars: Squadrons is the grand old price of free for another day or so via the Epic launcher and is a cracking space fighter VR experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story missions and the multiplayer battles have full bot support for antisocial types like myself 😁 Every time I play one of the cap-ship battles I think how it would be a superb way of integrating CQC into Elite’s main game.
I noticed that, people have until something like 15:59 GMT tomorrow to get it for free. I paid for it on release so already have it- I enjoyed it at the time but EDH still ticked all of my boxes. Not so since Oddity crapped all over my bed, but there we are.

I also bought it on release and didn’t feel shortchanged - once the first patch sorted out the frame rate in VR 😁

There is still a problem with screen-space reflections in VR during the static on-foot mission briefings and chat moments - reflections look just a bit too off and oily deck puddles look like they’re a couple of inches below the surface they should be on - and I doubt they’ll ever be fixed now.

Still, definitely a game I recommend for VR players - and turning around to see my bleeping R2 unit chum in the back seat of my X-Wing was totally worth the neck strain 😅

I didn't finish the single player campain and didn't bother with the multiplayer stuff. At first it was cool sitting in an X-Wing or Tie Fighter, but if anyone calls ED "planes" in space again, I would refer them to Squadrons :). The 6dof in Elite spoiled me for other space games :). The vibe and atmosphere was pretty cool though. It's just no replacement for ED's flight mechanics. But what is? ;)

Denial of the fact that nothing will happen I assume GroG79 means. And regarding Kubler-Ross concerning the 5 stages of grief, so denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. We should be through it true, and I personally accept it, but like anything in software, things can still be changed whilst there's active development- even if that might be 5 devs that also have to work on other projects apart from ED maintenance.

And so there's no harm asking the boss, er, did you do it?

I did ask yes.

...and it's not denial it's choosing to do something rather than nothing, why should I shut up and move on this isn't China or Iran. At the very least it shows interest.

Like many others I'm just here to express my support for proper VR support in the game. For me, what it boils down to is this:

I'm not going to buy Odyssey while the only VR support for on-foot gameplay is by looking at a giant screen projected into VR. This just isn't a good enough solution. Frontier needs to put proper VR support into the game. Unless that happens, I'll be spending my time and money with other VR games.

My view entirely. Apart from trying Oddity for an hour and seeing that grey letterbox in all its glory, I've not bothered with ED at all and won't be buying any more FD paintjobs or trinkets whilst VR is in the state it's in.

With the deepest respect, VR gamers are SIGNIFICANTLY DISadvantaged when it comes to shooter gameplay, when playing against non VR users.
The crosshair is where you are aiming. Raising sights is instant and accurate. You have the who FoV in front of you. You can turn on a coin.

The only advantage VR games may have is sitting behind something and blindly spraying over or around the edge hoping for a numpty to walk into their spray. And of course every FPS gamer in the world knows that's whats naids are for right-right?
This may be true, but in my case, I'm not looking at the shooter gameplay as much as the flying and exploration part of it that I lost.

FDevs I don't give a flying F what you do with Odyssey anymore. The DLC is still a stuttering mess around settlements in VR after 18 months of so called "optimization". In fact I have no confidence that you posses a know how to optimize Oddy engine to be VR compatible properly anyway. The only thing I ask for is not to FU Horizons' legacy mode too, so all of us poor lads who don't own 3080s and above can still enjoy playing ED in VR.

To be fair, everybody is sort of backing off on VR development. It's not just FDev.

Reason being, it just hasn't turned out to be the big sale that everybody thought it would be. The exorbitant price to buy everything it takes to get into it put it out of reach of most gamers. They're just not getting a return on the big investments they made into it to begin with. No big market, no more big investment.

Sure, I agree with that from a general point of view. But in FD's case, their core game engine can render in 3D, and I can't understand when it's been widely quoted from David Braben himself that their original contractor who put the VR support in didn't take more than a few days, that any additions like Oddity can't also be piped through what was original developed- why reinvent the wheel?

I’m currently playing Cyberpunk 2077 in VR curtesy of a lone modder’s work - who has also pumped out VR mods for several other games like GTA5, RDR2, Elden Ring, and HZD.

One of the rendering methods that can be selected is a non-stereoscopic mode, which still keeps complete surround-o-vision and 6 DoF movement but at a much more performance friendly level and without any stomach-lurching moments when forced movement occurs (for me, at least). Obviously you don’t get any depth perception but it still seems a bit 3D while playing due to my brain doing its compensation - the real world doesn’t stop being 3D if you close one eye, for example.

I think this would be a good fit for VREDO - the periscope view is extended beyond our peripheral vision, the HUD is shrunk to remain in our view, and headlook/aiming is linked to our headsets. But…it would need at least some dev time, and looking at the amount of outstanding VR issues that have been fixed since Odyssey released I think that time is in very short supply 😁

I've played Cyberpunk using the Luke Ross mod like yourself. It might well fall to a modder to put Oddity support back in. However, I doubt the FD specific Cobra engine warrants a modder's time, plus ED hardly has any proper API hooks to help support that, let alone the EULA side of things and other issues associated to ED being online and therefore technically having its code being altered in real time.

Off-topic I know, but personally I'm looking forward to the awesome modder Praydog's work, who's creating a framework mod much like Luke Ross, but the goal is it's supposed to work on ANY Unreal 4 game. That opens up the possibility of 100s of games to experience in stereoscopic (or not, if it makes you sick!).

Aye, I’m fortunate enough to have had my sea-legs carry over into VR - I still get a bit of a stomach-lurch on forced movements but it doesn’t spill over to nausea.

I think next year will be a fun time for VR - the console crowd will get PCVR-quality games thanks to PSVR2 launching in Feb (with a very nice selection of games), Quest 3 with its smaller & lighter pancake-lens headset, Praydog’s VR injector, Luke Ross’s AER v2, and my personal faves: iL-2 Cliffs of Dover devs releasing the VR update (fully-clickable Spitfire cockpit here I come!) and Dr Beef releasing the Quest 2-native versions of Jedi Outcast & Jedi Academy.

If Odyssey gets its most glaring VR issues fixed I may even start regularly playing it again 😁

So much this. It's just a tiring experience now not worth the frustration. I don't care about walking around as much and I can live with subpar performance (compared to Horizons) but the broken stuff is just impossible to put up with especially since a lot of it has been like that since Odyssey's release and each update seems to add something more.

Hi,
As a measure of how many CMDRs woudl like to see VR Support in Elite Odyssey please post a +1, Yes or other positive affirmation here.
An easy way to gauge the community sentiment.
Yes, we don't know yea or nea, but at least we can start to gather some metrics and numbers.
I for one would love to see VR Support.
Thanks
Pete
VR was one of the best things in Elite Dangerous please bring it back.

I propose we start a patreon that pays the salary of an Odyssey VR dev. FDEV has no interest in investing in a dedicated VR person, why don’t us, the customers, do so?

To be fair loads here bought the game, arx and some pledged on Kickstarter. The only failed vr side IS odyssey so i would and do propose rolling back to horizons codebase which had vr perfectly implemented.
