Elite Dangerous starts VR automatically, crashes when steamVR shuts down

I'll try to keep things short and concise:
I've got Elite Dangerous on the Epic Games Store. When starting up the actual game (through the launcher) it automatically starts up SteamVR, regardless of whether or not my headset is connected. Shutting down SteamVR or the Windows Mixed Reality application causes the game to crash. The 3d HMD setting within the graphics settings of the game make no difference, SteamVR remains open. Only difference is that when VR is switched to "on" there is an actual image displayed on the headset as opposed to the blank SteamVR room it displays otherwise and VR functions as it should.

My question would be how to disable this automatic startup of SteamVR, as even without using my headset for the game it eventually goes into sleep mode, disabling SteamVR and subsequently crashing the game. As it stands right now it's impossible to play the game without using VR.

I doubt that'd work since steamVR would start up even with the headset completely disconnected, in which case it pops up this weird-ass window for room calibration... It's convinced that there's totally a headset connected to it even when there's nothign of the sort

in the steam settings page have you tried unticking use desktopgame theatre when launching desktop games while steam vr is active
dunno what that does but sounds like it may be worth a shot
else maybe try a support ticket

Tried that, nothing changed. Will write a support ticket, though I don't think they'll answer. Rarely had luck with support tickets before. Still worth a shot at least

just googled this
In order to disable SteamVR from launching, let's make the system think it is uninstalled. In the Task Manager window, select the Startup tab. Simply rename the SteamVR folder to something else than "SteamVR" and you are good to go.

There is a "/NOVR" command line argument to keep it from doing that. I have to use that on standalone version. I remember doing that on Epic version too, but it has changed at some point. Now it doesn't launch in VR unless I choose the 'Launch in VR' option.

update on the situation: support has suggested the obvious - disconnecting the headset - and I found out that its USB cable was connected all along, which was most likely causing the weird SteamVR issues. now that it's completely gone SteamVR still automatically launches but now I can shut it down without issue and play the game normally.

Still, I'd like to know more about Kissamies' suggestion - where do I input the command line argument, and where is the "Launch in VR" option located? I'm aware of the VR setting within the actual game and I distinctly remember a "launch in VR" option somewhere in the launcher but I'm not sure if it was an older version or an entirely different game with its own standalone launcher, since I can't find it in the current ED launcher (where you go to select the game version you want to play).

Got the same problem, and also can't find that place for the command line which existed in the past. I was able to start Odyssey without any issues a few weeks ago, now it's crashing right before the intro.
My VR headset isn't connected to the PC.

Just solved it:
  1. In Epic click on the button on the top right (If your name is "wave" in Epic, then click on the "W").
  2. A dropdown menu opens.
  3. Click on "Settings".
  4. In Settings scroll down and a list of your installed games appear.
  5. There's Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous: Odyssey.
  6. I've expanded the first one, "Elite Dangerous" (even if I have Odyssey, I was just blind),
  7. tick the checkbox "Additional Command Line Arguments"
  8. and entered /novr in its form field below.

oh wow, that actually worked! It's a somewhat shoddy solution still since if I want to play in VR one day I'd have to manually go and remove the /novr (I think, could be that I can just activate the HMD within Elite's settings and have it work just fine) but for the time being this is probably the best solution.

Thank you!

Didn´t work for me.

I look in graphic options, but i can´t change resolution to 2560 x 1440. Notice that my hmd is not plugged in.

I have this issue as well via the Frontier launcher. I cannot start the game without SteamVR loading. Shutitng off SteamVR shutss down the game. Never had this issue on Steam (it gives you the option to start in VR mode or not).

This worked for me! I can prevent ED from activating SteamVR when I want to play, thanks!
