Spring dlc Speculation 2023

This are unfortunate but good points. A desert pack could look like:
  • Dromedary
  • African spurred tortoise
  • Addax
  • Hamadrayas baboon
  • yellow footed rock wallaby
  • collared peccary
  • some clone like the arabian oryx
  • exhibit

And there's still the porcupine, echidna, perentie, saiga and several more candidates.

But yea we lost quite a few good candidates, but frontier has shown willingnes to put species that don't fit perfectly. Like the red-necked wallaby is not really a grassland-associated animal, yet it made it in.
I don't think they would do another wallaby but I did forget the peccary, that's another good option. And I suppose the Indian porcupine could fit too.

And out of curiosity, how would you all feel about a shift to just animal packs?
I'd mostly be okay with it. Though I'd love to see a Bavarian/Tudor and an American Wild West/Prairie/Log Cabin set, we we can make those with existing pieces, it's just time consuming. I'd love to have non-blueprint pieces especially of the Bavarian/Tudor style. Ultimately as much as I'd like them, I'd consider more animals a good trade off for not having them.

But one thing I do absolutely need building wise, the wood set turned 90% to be horizontal, not vertical. The vast number of wood/log cabin building's I've see have the logs running horizontal, so having just the vertical as the default in game is really frustrating, But keep the vertical style as well, I just really feel like we need both.

But otherwise, I'm fine with just animal packs.

The Hamadryas baboon's range extends from the Red Sea in Eritrea to Ethiopia,[9] Djibouti and Somalia. It is also native to the Sarawat Mountains of southwestern Arabia, in both Yemen and Saudi Arabia

A highland pack (continuing the land theme over a mountain-based name) could fit the baboon. Yes, a gelada feels more obvious for this theme but being obvious is not really Frontier's thing lately. Feels more likely than a desert theme to me now

Here's all the desert or desert-adjacent animals in the top 100 of the wishlist:

  1. African Crested Porcupine
  2. Secretary Bird
  3. Hamadryas Baboon
  4. Dromedary
  5. Saiga
  6. Honey Badger
  7. Addax
  8. Black Rhino
  9. Short-Beaked Echidna
  10. Greater Rhea
  11. Patagonian Mara
  12. Pallas's Cat
  13. Collared Peccary
  14. Somali Wild Donkey
  15. Gerenuk
  16. Rock Hyrax
  17. Giant Eland
  18. Bighorn Sheep
  19. Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby
  20. African Spurred Tortoise
  21. Indian Crested Porcupine

That's quite a lot of options.

Here's one issue though. A desert pack would almost certainly be an animals pack, but the grasslands pack just cannibalized it a bit.
TBH, if Frontier can turn a theme like Conservation into a scenery set, I wouldn't be surprised if a pack like Deserts would be turned into a scenery pack.

There's a multitude of ways you can go, you can either focus on the more typical desert scenery based on American/Mexican deserts or you can go the more modern route and provide us with pieces to easily make desert domes.

So all in all, a desert pack for me seems like one of the potential scenery packs, and then you only need 4 desert animals.

I still think a desert pack is likely at some point. The baboon and the dromedary + a chameleon are too popular and can anchor the pack. Add the addax and peccary and it's a nice pack. To make it an animal pack, add a roadrunner, a perentie and the cute sand cat to get the likes on social media. You get a bird, a reptile, a primate, a cat, the most wanted exhibit and an animal with 5 signs in game. Best seller pack!

That being said, don't worry about animals that have been left out of their most suitable pack. We can always get a farewell pack "planet zoo around the world" with a mix of random animals.

Something I've been thinking about. Either they are saving the baboon species for the Hamadryas baboon in a desert pack, or we are never getting one. Because otherwise this would have been the perfect pack for it.

Here's one issue though. A desert pack would almost certainly be an animals pack, but the grasslands pack just cannibalized it a bit. A good pack roster is a bit harder to do now. Caracal is now out. Emu is now out. Armadillo is out. Striped hyena is now out, and the brown hyena is pretty unlikely because of that too. Scimitar oryx is out. What would a 7 + 1 roster look like at this point?
It's the same for crested porcupine they could be perfect for the new grasslands animal pack but they still didn't make in, so I think or frontier save them for desert pack or for nocturnal pack or we will never get them and that would be really sad for me.

To be fair, the conservation theme covered very similar ground to the one "Zoo tycoon 2: Endangered species" expansion pack covered, down to the lamps being similar.

It was not completely out of thin air.

Yeah, I hate this... there's to many unique islands and too many unique animals to just go "islands = cliché tropical paradise."
It's more that the temperate islands generally have a lot less interesting fauna to offer. There's been hundreds of suggestion for island pack rosters, and all of them are tropical (+new zealand) heavy.

Not really? Like, sure, the lamps were similar and I imagine probably a nice homage from someone who also played ZT2, but other than that the scenery of the Conservation pack is absolutely nothing like the ES theme :p

Either way, it's pretty irrelevant to what I was saying, deserts is one of those biomes you can easily make a scenery pack for.

What choice of scenery would go well with the choice of animals?
One building set that has been wanted for a while by a few of us is a horizontal clapboard set. This would also fit the "Wild West" vibe some are talking about, but it's a pretty standard mid-century building material in Australia (inc. Tasmania) and New Zealand, so it could work for an Islands DLC.

That said I'm not sure why everyone is so convinced it will be a scenery pack. IMO they obviously reworked the pattern this year to get the Halloween vibe going for the Twilight Pack; technically we're still "due" an animal pack in March/April.

Weird frontier released the camp cretaceous dlc for jwe2 in march and next month the wetland dlc for pz. Maybe universal pressuring them for a dlc each 3 months?
