Elite: Dangerous Legacy League

I'm just saying that clearly FD want players to use EDO, but judging by comments on here including myself, people aren't happy with the UI and planetary graphics, hence why players are sticking with 3.8. (y) If FD want more players to use EDO then they will need to give them a better UI, the one most are familiar with and seem to prefer. Until that happens I'm staying put, but I'd still be open to playing Odyssey again if they improve that infuriating UI. The reason being, whether you like it or not, Odyssey will keep evolving over time whereas Legacy will eventually fade away.
If they'd release it on "next gen" consoles, I and many others would certainly try it, but I've very little interest in playing Elite or most other games on PC, I really only want to play on my family of systems of choice, Playstation and I wish Frontier would continue to support them! 😯😂😯🤘 .

Fdev is strong arming you into Odyssey by stopping any progress made in Horizons 3.8 and not transferring to Odyssey.
Frontier puts out a inferior product “ Odyssey “ poor performance, inconsistent lighting, overly complicated UI.
But we had a choice between versions so no problem you can pick your favorite.

Then Fdev stops all progress on Horizons being transferred, if you tag a planet in Horizons 3.8, unlock engineering, upgrade ships, anything.
This just seems a terrible way to treat commanders that love Horizons 3.8.

Just as a point of interest. One of Pluto's moons Charon has several canyons ranging from 5 to 10 km in depth with one of them extending for 1050 km, that's nearly its entire circumference.
Out of interest have FDev used the actual pics of Pluto's surface to update its appearance in-game?

That's nonsense, they were entirely what the team at the time meant to do and they spent a lot of time working on the maths to generate it.
I recall it from some video, as well, where it was uttered. It could have been a marketing line, but you obviously dont think they saw the new planets, and thought "oh perfect, this will upset the community", do you? The planets as they are now, is what they wanted for planets. Dr K Ross didnt leave before the release. She left after they realized the planets, she produced, and they approved, didnt sit well with the community. No?

I dont see the big deal in why that had to change things so much, other than they did not like how the planets turned out before. Im not talking of how sharp they can get edges to work, I mean shouldn't the planets be similar, and the only difference is ridges are more "rolling" instead of edgy? There's no reason to change them, otherwise. I dont mean the tech involved to walk around, Im saying some locations where you can walk around now are just as ludicrous as those on the old planets, yet we're still able to walk around on them, so why the bulllore about it having to change for that ability? They changed them, because they this is how they want them to look.

What I find rather revealing (sorry) is the fact that F D knew that the EDO planetary stuff was horrendous. So much so that they physically moved the site of Dav's Hope to be in permanent darkness to hide how awful the planet looked. :poop:

Yeah, this sort of thing makes absoulutely no sense to have to do, to me, other than this is how they really wanted it. Why not leave it where it was? "oh, the terrain generator blah blah blah" What? The terrain is bland enough now that you can stick any settlement anywhere, so why not leave it where it was? So it's literally just a matter of final choice. They chose all this. Why not change it back? Re-roll it, and pop out a galaxy closer to what was before? Obviously I have no idea about the complexities of galaxy development.

[EDIT]

and the relevent bit from Dr Ross's making a galaxy:

Edit: there are real features in Horizons the mathematics produced which are entirely missing from Odyssey's manually created terrain stamps.

Thanks for those links, by the way. That brings up another couple of things, that are present in all versions of Elite. You notice when they go past a planet, or get close to a surface, deformation happens at the edges. If it takes 2 seconds to load a view, facing you, as you're flying by, why not render the full planet? Lets say that take twice as long, so 4 seconds. But as you pass the planet, then it's all loaded, not tearing up the textures. But lets say its because the image to generate the planet is a square with a highly detailed circle, but from that circle to the edges, its less detailed. So possibly, for each planet it generates 6 of those images. Why not load them all, or at least the ones in your direction of travel, so there's no tearing?
Next is as you approach a surface, some parts are subdivided more than others. How about making it so all parts in the cameras field of view subdivides equally? Dont tell me, they're worried about frames per second? That's on the low side, anyways, no?
And since Dr K's vids, I keep hearing of planets all start as cubes. How about trying spheres? Probably takes a bit more to compute, but at this point...try anything?

Mornin' Purebloods. Do we still get ARX in Legacy?
Askin' for a fren..
We get the normal amount of Arx for playing the game, however we're not getting any of the bonus Arx or cosmetics (or anything else new, though if Frontier have any brains, they'll change that as soon as possible and release a next gen version of the game!! 😯😂) that they're getting in "live" mode, they're only for the "chosen few" playing on PC 4.0!! 😯😂🩲 😀😀 .

The arx rewards for playtime seemed to be a bit borked and not progressing in legacy on PC last I checked.
Although console players cannot get the xmas arx. Win some, lose some, I guess.

This is one of the many reasons I prefer offline games - once installed on my computer, I have complete control when and how (and if) I update the game, and it should ideally be designed to provide its own content rather than rely on developers spoon-feeding content over time. My number one complaint with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is its "live service" approach, where I have to update it to use it. I get everything configured how I want, and then a new update comes along and trashes my performance and kills my enjoyment.

On the other hand, one of the few things that continues to separate Elite from other space games I play is the shared BGS and galactic narrative. The closest thing I have to this in an offline space game is the X games, where the NPCs are "real", so there is a vibrant sense of galactic evolution. The problem is that as real as these NPCs are, they still lack personality and human drive, so I continue to think of them as algorithms rather than people. With this in mind, I'm very interested to see how Starfield NPCs are presented. I know Starfield will be more "on rails", but I lost myself in the very immersive, believable world of Skyrim for over a year with even basic NPC personalities and repetitive voice acting, so a more modern version of this set in space could easily scratch my "I'm part of a narrative" itch that currently gives Elite an edge.

If you can spare the download/HD space and your computer can at least get you into 4.0 then you can claim the free ARX,and it gets added to your 3.8 total as well.

I had a look and it even applies to the legacy pre Horizons version to.

Because using snippets of 3.8 alongside the 4.0/Odyssey footage in his videos guarantees views and links from CMDRs such as yourself, easy
I don’t believe anyone say’s , Let’s watch this because it has Horizons 3.8 bits.
Ant is just making video content that is pleasant to watch while he ramble’s on.

Most likely he goes through his vast library collection and picks out the most appealing and interesting clips, that just happened to be Horizons 3.8.

It’s sad that one day the only way to see these type of scenes is through Ant’s videos.
