Is Elite Dangerous a dead game? I compared it to some others ...

Is it strange to anyone else to see the game referred to as an MMO?

I realize that it technically is an MMO. It's just that, I've never had a positive gaming interaction with another player in ED. Never. The closest I've gotten is chatting with people while mining or at Jameson. But I never saw those people or actually played the game with them.

When I've played in open, the only interactions I've had have been with gankers. Sometimes I escaped, and I suppose you might think that's "thrilling" - but it really wasn't. It was mostly just an interruption of something I was trying to accomplish. And of course, dying really sucks.

When I've tried multicrew, I was dropped into a copilot chair with absolutely no clue what the controls were - and no way of figuring that out. I literally couldn't even fire the guns ... if turrets were equipped, which of course they weren't because turrets suck. I suppose I could have launched a fighter, but I could do that outside of multicrew as well. So, the whole thing was just boring.

So, I stopped playing in open and stopped doing multicrew; the game doesn't feel like an MMO to me.

It doesn't have to be this way. I've seen suggestions for ways to encourage coop multiplayer. Other games have "quests" you can spawn, and places to meet up with people who want to do those quests.

I know there are other things I could try. I could probably find people to fight thargoids with, but I wouldn't be very good at that. I might head out to the great annihilator and see what the community is like out there. All I'm saying is that it doesn't feel like an MMO
Are you in a squadron? Do you use Discord?

Fixed that for you ;)

Even in the Private Group known as Australia I've run into quite a few people. Also helps that most Aussies that play this game are chill.

One funny experience - I was one my way to a destination (I think it might have been a rares CG). On one of my many jumps I saw a cobra loitering near the star. Dude happened to be in my jump path so I just lined him up. I wasn't going to be in the system long so I didn't bother greeting him. I think he noticed me charging him at the last minute and reacted by facing me to prevent interdiction. As he was typing "Hello..." I jumped out. Still feel bad for not saying hello back.

You need to find an active squadron and join it. You will get a completely new experience.

One way of pushing up the Steam chart numbers for Elite (temporarily) would be if Frontier introduced some new ships, The Panther Clipper, the Puma, Tiger Trader, Moray Starboat etc. etc.....that's for sure. ;)
Just sayin' 🕺 :giggle:

Jack :)

OK, so maybe no-one has asked this question, and maybe some (including me, I admit) have suggested that Elite Dangerous is a dying game. I thought that given another game on the list I will put below is pretty much dead, much to the annoyance of those who liked its promising start, I wanted to see how Elite Dangerous compares to other MMO's currently still going, regardless of genre.

Similar numbers during below average steam counts in any number points in years past. I would think Frontier would be planning on building the next iteration of ED, or on a next major update after Odyssey, just not announcing it for years until it's more ready as usual. Star Trek Online has much lower numbers as an example, yet it keeps having more and recent updates content such as arcgames' "Star Trek Online: Ascension".

Do you mean the video titled "Frontier LOSE ~$1.5 BILLION In Two Years On Market Value"? The title is factually accurate.

No it's not factually accurate.
Frontier didnt lose any money. The some investors lost some money, other won some money. Whoever got any shares at the initial value, their investment is still doubled.
But again FDev didnt lost any money. They had a first half ot the FY2023 quite profitable (almost 7 millions operational profit), their cash deposits increased, etc.

So what did that title except gaining views in a tabloid manner? Nothing for FDev, nothing for ED, nothing for the player base, except views for the OA's questionable (IMO) business.
So i dont feel the need to give him any views since i dont like his way of doing business in regards to FDev/Elite

This you?

If so, it explains everything.

CIG sell ships and jpegs and land and weapons (Pay2Win, Pay2Skip, Pay4Convenience, etc) and subscriptions and cosmetics, and average around $300 spending from each paying account; there are even more paying accounts (1.8m+) than there are players (1m+) . The average spending from Elite's players is much lower.
Their marketing / sales pulled off something remarkable: a way to have players who don't play the game regularly spend serious amounts of money in the cash shop. In other games, people who have stopped playing the game don't tend to buy anything, but in Star Citizen, they can say that they aren't playing now because It's An Alpha, and they buy ships (and other stuff) as an "investment" for the future, for when they imagine they will be playing.
I don't know any other games who have managed to achieve the same.

Explains what exactly?
Could be a 2nd account and the original has Elite V of everything?
Ranks also don't say everything... for example, i am Combat Deadly. What you don't see on Inara, i have two SLF pilots, almost from start. So what is my rank and what is it telling anyone? Am i good at PVE, PVP, Thargs? Or nothing, just because i played long enough?

Also i have to agree with some, maybe most, of the statements in above post. However, as others already recommended, you can also give open a chance. One of my last nice encounters with another Cmdr was him offering help with loading my FC. We both collected commodities for some CG on our FC, as he finished his, asked politely if he may help... So offering help and helping others may be a good reason for open...
I have also made the almost exactly experience as sidereal6, which brings me to play to often in solo. Sometimes more than i want, but my time is here for MY playing, not for bad experience on my side.

(just to clarify... it is not me / a 2nd account from me :D)

Clickbaity and suggestive video titles are what work on Youtube, they're important for maintaining views and the algorithm, so OA will naturally do what's best for his channel as advised by his official Youtube manager.

Drawing conclusions based on video titles alone seems naïve as you'll regularly be incorrect, for as the saying goes: never judge a book by its cover. The videos are made to be watched and listened to of course.
It must be a nightmare trying to be a good, concientious youtuber.

I've never really given a crap about my video titles (or thumbnails) and how they affect popularity since the videos I post are pretty much always done so I can then grab the link and use it in a specific context in a forum post or similar. I have titles like "Towering Inferno", "SRV Art", "The Mordor Ice Rally" and "Thargoid Assassin". I generally get a few hundred views at best. Recently I posted a video called "Boarding a Farragut class capital ship (in an SRV)". I'm not entirely sure why (the thumbnail is nothing to catch the eye) but for some reason that one just took off like a bat out of hell and currently has over 100,000 views!!!

It got me thinking, if I did give a crap about viewing figures (which I would if I was trying to make a living out of doing this) I'd have to start thinking VERY seriously about this kind of thing. Discovering that a click-baity title got me 1000 more views than a non-click-baity title would leave me seriously wrestling with my conscience! On the whole I think OA treds that balance quite skilfully.

It's not just the titles though. I've listened to some of the actual videos and they seem to do little except moan about Elite and FDev. Very little if any praise for what they do well.

And we both know there's only one reason on earth to do that, don't we?
Not really... if i think about it... three possible reasons, if i would use a 2nd.
a) I was to lazy to switch accounts, search for the 2nd password or something like that (would be probably me :D)
b) I am well known, at least for some people, my sqadron or similar... so i don't want my opinion to be alligned to my "real me".
c) Trolling and trying to provoke with toxic comments etc.... can't see that in his post, as he is only describing experience made (and i can confirm), also other posts don't look like trolling...
