Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I don't have a small explorer type ship. Well, no, actually I do - in the guise of a DBx but I really don't enjoy flying it.
My mat collectors would easily also fit the short(ish) range exploration role, due to the similar equipment. But as I am in the museum, a Scarab is mandatory for ground exploration. And they are all small ships, like the Champion (an Adder) or the Stargazer.
I also have two dedicated explorers, the Star Moth and the Star Chief, which are able to go a little further.
The Heart Of Gold's main function is as a memento of my commander's heritage, but she still gets flown every once in a while.

I've started to engineer a new ship for the first time this year. I'm reliability informed it is "the meta" for speed running Exobiology scans when you are based from your fleet carrier in the black. Getting the SRV out wastes time. What you need is the ship with the smallest landing footprint possible to be able to land virtually anywhere, no matter how rough the terrain.

So I bought a Sidewinder...

It will have an adequate 40ly jump range and shields weak enough to bring disaster if I'm not careful enough. Should add a little drama I suppose. I'll tinker with it for a few weeks before I head out into the black with the carrier. Going to play with the Thargoid war activities again for a while first.

Now this is food for thought.

A small landing footprint may well come in handy for those mountainous regions where some elusive bios lurk.

Not having an SRV feels a bit disconcerting however! :D

I might give it a whirl though; my Sidey is feeling very sorry for herself under that moth eaten tarpaulin. I think she's called "Trillian'.

It is indeed faster to use a ship only and ditch the Srv altogether.
This Sidey build should be good enough for both single and carrier based operations with solid enough shields to survive slamdunk-landings.
(No Srv tho, so no planetary material gathering sessions for jumponium...)

Time for some more exo then. These high CZ's are not good for my blood pressure

I looked into the Sidey build for exo but I found it a little too restrictive for my tastes. So... despite my dislikes, I'd going to give the DBx a workout instead.

We have the likes of EDHM to make out cockpits looks great so all we need now isn API that changes the engine sound...

I'm using a DBX too, but it's quite bulky and not very maneuverable - however, the jump range and the internals quite make up for it.

Another rather decent option is a T-6 - decent internals, can jump 50+, great cockpit view and IT HAS LIGHTS (with the hazard pack ofc)

I have a T6 with the Hazard pack :D

I just want to experiment with a small ship for exo. It may be a Cobra instead. Hmm.

I’ve been back to my DBx for a bit for ExoBio - it’s nice having the smaller footprint over the Phantom, though for most things other than mountain valley Fungoida the latter is fine… managed to even get a small set of mining equipment, a refinery and 16 cargo capacity onto the DB, so I can investigate hotspots / mine a core (just one with that cargo cap^) while hopping about, without having to haul out a mining ship... it’s called Kermit, appropriately 🐸 :]

…used a Cobra for a bit, as had been doing in the early Alpha - it’s almost as landable as the DBx, more so than the Phantom imo - works quite well as an exo-explorer, but i doubt i’d be able to fit much mining gear in there ;]

Right, the C3 is now ready so I'm off to do some gardening.

What was nice is that I had nearly all the modules I needed - all engineered too. The only thing I don't have is an experimental on the FSD. Given how little MM or DC will give me, I don't think I'll bother.

Anyway, it was nice seeing Jameson Memorial again, if only to get a 4H GFSD booster.

I realise there's a special Ammonia World thingy going on right now and I just found this one, with rings so I guess it's even more rare. Pity I'm still over 25,000 LY from the bubble where I can hand it in though. :sneaky:

There's quite a few hotspots in the rings as well, but only one Tritium.

Oh, and my salad rating was upgraded to Elite IV yesterday as well.

The background reminds me of the old Isaac Asimov short story Nightfall.

The other recommendation for Exobiology ship with a bit more jump range than a Sidewinder I've had is the Viper MKIV. It has a smaller landing footprint that ships like the Cobra and DBX. SRV is still a realistic option in the Viper. I don't like using the Cobra for SRV activity as it has a habit of landing with a hump in the ground under it's wide belly making it impossible to drive the SRV under it - not enough clearance.

Viper Mk4 is a good all-round OD ship - for settlements as well as Exo. Fast, small footprint - two SRV's, Scarab & Scorpion, etc...

So this small-ish system with 3 bio-sustaining worlds and a total of 19 species has been quite a good find... almost 500m in first discovery scans :]

Did an on-foot salvage mission last night, collected the sample and logged off for the evening. Log in this evening with a Mission Failed and 1000Cr fine. I never knew on-foot mission time limit were dependent on handing the mission in rather than (like ship missions) on completing the requirements.

Edit: just landed at an IF station and the 100Cr fine doesn't show up.

Which ship missions stop the timer on completing the requirements?

Well now you know! :)

1) Be at an IF in a system where the faction that issued your fine or bounty does NOT have a presence.
2) Log off and on while you are at the IF.

That usually fixes things. You can also try logging into Horizons 4.0. That will sometimes work, too.

Ship based salvage missions require you to return the salvage to the mission giver.
