Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

CIG are that serious about poaching Elite users that they'd go through all of that? Interesting. And of course, this came at no cost to the development of any kickstarter promises I suppose? Makes you wonder what else they'd do...
Nah, didn't CIG already have racing as a standalone module back when it was just hangars, star marine etc? With actual courses I think? So the racing isn't being used to steal ED players, they're just using locations players already used as tracks so they don't have to do it and adding some fluff around it. Racing was something CIG came up with, not a bitter ex ED player.

I mean certain youtubers may * think * they've singlehandedly persuaded CIG to implement their racing gameplay, unlike the dastardly devs at frontier towers, but lol. No.

Just out of interest I watched one of that youtubers videos from a few months ago, he was complaining about the different flight modes CIG were implementing, too complicated. And suggesting he was going to persuade them to ... add another mode just for racing.

How to ruin a game - listen to the noisy youtubers.

I'd say "waves of instability" is accurate :D

CIG released 3.18 because they wanted to run a ship sale:

The PTU was full of continuous problems, even without a "large player load". Even Berks says the patch should not have been released, and he played it almost every day.
And yet, alleged 2.3 mil on a week following after a dumpster fire release. It just does not really add up.

And let's all take a deep breath. In. And. Out. Breathe. Let's try to be objective about:

"Star Citizen is an in-development multiplayer, space trading and combat simulation game.... An extended retry of unrealized plans for Freelancer, [it] is being led by director Chris Roberts. The game was announced via a private crowdfunding page in September 2012, and was later joined on October 18, 2012 by a successful Kickstarter campaign which drew in over US$2 million.

Pre-production of the game began in 2010, with production starting in 2011. Star Citizen has become highly criticized during its long production process, both for the fact that there is still no clear release date and for the challenges backers who have abandoned the project have faced in receiving a refund. The launch of the game was originally anticipated for 2014, but was repeatedly delayed...

After more than a decade in development, no projected date for the commercial release of Star Citizen is currently given...."

Whatever your feelings, the above seems to be the contemporaneous narrative. And yet, a game, ten years after it was revealed as a work in progress, has yet to achieve any status other that of some hybrid alpha, pre-alpha and early access, with less than 1% of the game worlds completed.

"The launch of the game was originally anticipated for 2014"

Today is 2023. Over eight years since the still current management team said that it would be completed, and along the way we've all seen many folks defending this. Sadly however, facts are facts.

"Pre-production of the game began in 2010"

Today is 2023.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was in development for 124 years since its old west setting was being developed in 1899 so if anything Star Citizen is ahead of schedule.
So, if RDR2 was 124 years ex post facto and, if SC's setting is... ...gawd I just don't care... ...then let's add 124 years to their 'in game date' and wait for that as a likely release date... as improbably early as it may sound...

* Sauna Meshing presumed functional per 1,000 player group...

Wasn't it Ben Lesnick who came up with the idea?
Ben didn't create the marketing cult, he was imo the only real person on that project who wasn't contracting, adored Wing Commander, and legitimately cared. People like that are the fuel burned by businessmen. Can always tell who really cared by who keeps the fire lit. If you go looking for the history of Wing Commander, who's maintaining that info? Ben. If you go looking for the history of Elite, who's maintaining that info? Ian.

CIG are that serious about poaching Elite users that they'd go through all of that? Interesting.
It's not poaching, Frontier ignored the racing community from the beginning, ignored the huge threads about tiling ruining everything in Odyssey, and then closed the bug about it with a statement that they weren't going to fix it. So with racing in Elite doomed, that community looked elsewhere. Frontier threw a wrench in their own machine, no shenanigans by CIG operatives were required. CIG just listened to the same ideas that had bounced off of Frontier.

SC has had racing in since almost the beginning but it sucked. It was a minigame and minigames always suck (see also: CQC), and it was in limbo since their contractors left. They'd just gotten their planetary sculpting tools working and were looking for things to do with it, so the racing community proposing ideas that would use it came at the perfect time, and was a path to rebooting racing. Basically, ignore high-effort people at your own risk.

Btw, one of the more impressive results of the fallout was the "then we'll make our own game, with beer, and hookers" approach, you'll find it for free on Steam, "Fly Dangerous". Again, don't ignore high-effort people.

5 years ago (2018), game almost hitting beta.

EDIT: Note: Poster's last post in reddit was 2 years ago, still praising CIG.
The potential is still there for SC to hit BETA tomorrow.
Is this an employee or related to Chris Roberts at all? If it's official that 3.2 is Beta, I'm guessing SC will never progress beyond 3.19.99 (oh look, it works as M/D/Y too).

He should have put "I love this kind of gameplay!!" at the end, people might have mistaken that as a complaint.

They (SC fans) keep continually making comparisons to other REAL and FINISHED games... and still dare to say that "what's in SC is clearly better and more realistic..."

That is what CR has instilled in their brains, not to think with criteria, simply to repeat the nonsense of "we are the best of the best".

Just a point of note for those whales and knights who think that "the stars on SC" (well, actually for the moment only 1, and it's really only a jpg.... it doesn't exist as such physically) are the best:

Maybe the citizens meant 'Star' as in the biggest cast in a Chris Roberts production?
