Odyssey Going Forwards

But you can beat, and be done with, Starfield? Then back to Elite to see if ANYTHING has been fixed yet..
Been playing since 2015 (Ver1.2), have 3 Cmdr Accounts, have flattened 2 of them twice, grind all the way back to ( 1 of them Combat Elite, the t'other Trader Elite and combat) |Elite with both of them, and the game is STILL NOT FIXED, but they do keep breaking it.

I've always tried to have reasonable expectations, but what I do think Frontier gets wrong is what it termed in its financial report as the 'Release and Nurture' system of releasing games, which I would assume from the wording is to release a game and steadily add improvements, to 'nurture' it.

Which in turn i guess you could say is a slow, calculating, low-risk and safe, conservative approach towards delivering just enough to develop the game, prolong it and keep it just in the green and away from the risk of going into the red. No big financial gambles, no wild investments, no showing your cards or making promises you may feel obliged to stick with even if they result in more financial commitments.

It make's sense to me when i consider how they had various assets in place which were leaked previously, but it took them so long to drip feed them into the game. The scorpion being one example, it was leaked about 2 years before they introduced it.

Now, that's fair i guess, they are a company, that is their model, its their decision and their money. Of course.. as a gamer.. I think its fair to comment that this approach can grow thin with players, especially when a game has been out for a number of years and you need to keep it some bit fresh.

I'm sure some may read this and think, well hasn't been Frontier releasing constant updates, improvements and implementing the Thargoid war. Surely that's a big deal and some bit of a gamble. Yes, I guess I would partially agree there. But the crux of my problem, is the lack of 'general content'. You have the Thargoid war, Brilliant! You have an interesting narrative that is genuinely very good, Brilliant! But I'm starting to slowly get that thought in my head now... 'okay, but what about other parts of the Elite Dangerous game I enjoy?'. What about expanded on foot features, new weapons, new ships, new suits, new fauna, planet features, possible side stories, ground base developments and added styles / buildings, mission loops, expanded on foot mining, mysteries, reasons to explore particular parts of the galaxy (clue based hunts, interesting outposts with odd/fun missions etc etc), things like that, we all could go on and on and on with suggestions. But you get my point....

Again, I know some are thinking, jesus your damned if you do and damned if you dont. I understand that, but I just hope the entire game is improved. As frontier says, the game is whatever you make it and what you enjoy, so I think there should be some focus on different areas of the game and a reasonable release of new 'general' content.

Is correct. But not much is left of the ambitious plans even after 2 years.
Yes, I also beat Odyssey to Elite, but it was more of a grind party than fun.
Not too far wrong there cmdr, my concern was what exactly was in Odyssey, for me, once I'd modded up my weapons & suits.......as I don't like pewpew in Elite full stop, the only benefit Iv had from Odyssey now, is back to Exploring Systems with the only goal left to reach Elite V in Exobio scans....and I could have done that without ANY mods or weapons!
Once that's achieved then Odyssey will be almost useless to me......though I must say that Iv put in the hours since the DLC was released 2 years ago, so I have had value for money by playing Elite & the Odyssey DLC.

More concerning - well for Frontier anyway, is Im more into other EA games, like city/planet/farm building & steering away from Space games.

Not sure if I'm expressing this so that my thought comes over in the proper manner. But personally I've gotten thousands of hours out of the game, maybe it's unreasonable to expect more from just a game.

On the other hand it appears to me that there is so much more that could be added, it's like a construction site with walls erected, now it needs doors, windows, staircases, paint, etc... Or maybe I just like the game too much and am being unreasonable.. 🤷‍♂️

Everything is unreasonable to some, reasonable to others. If you're enjoying the game, that's the only reason that matters.

I think that in long-lived persistent multiplayer environments, the problem is less about implementing new features and more about coming up with feasible new rewards for those who already have everything.

It doesn't make sense to punch only more money and material faucets into the game because it only accelerates power creep. Even new ships wouldn't help much because they don't sink enough of the two.

Generally, at this point in the MMO life cycle, the game should be expanded perpendicularly away from these two axes (money, materials) and any new rewards should be connected towards these new dimensions. But it's actually very difficult because it has to be well thought out, then implemented and seamlessly integrated with existing content.

Powerplay seems like a pretty obvious expression of this to me, as does Odyssey. Make no mistake, every persistent online multiplayer game will eventually face this very same challenge with 100% certainty. Frontier seems to be well aware of this and seems to be trying many different attack vectors with ED until the right dimension is found... hopefully before time runs out.

Speaking of which (time), if push comes to shove, I would at least be ready to switch to a subscription model, or to any of the financing models used in other similar games, and through which it would be easier for designers to explore and exhaust these dimensions.

I’d also, personally, be happy with a subscription model for ED in principle - assuming:
  • there is regular content (as in ships, suits, etc - tangible stuff) being added
  • it’s not insane pricing!

And there aren’t many games I would say that about …

But I think there would be a serious issue switching to that given everyone’s had ongoing access “for free” thus far … any subscription model would have to coexist with a “free to play” model and restricting what is included in that “free to play” part (be it time or features) would go down like a lead-Cobra.

So, any subscription model would have to add stuff over and above the current “free to play” model. Could be Arx, could be like a “Season Pass” kinda thing whereby you get the “regular content” included vs others having to buy DLCs … personally a subscription that included a Fleet Carrier would be quite cool but that’s probably niche since anyone who plays regularly enough to want a subscription could probably just afford a FC and the upkeep anyway!!

I dunno - just spit-balling … it’s not something I want necessarily but it’s also not something I would defacto object to if the model was right.

Elite is my Fav Game.... FULL STOP, until that is 'Starfield' is released (Possibly?? )
X4 Foundations is my favorite space game today.
Space Engineers was my favorite space game last year (or maybe the year before).
Elite Dangerous was my favorite space game before that.
Various Wing Commander games were my favorite space games before that.
Elite 1984 was my favorite space game before that.
Playing with Star Wars action figures was my favorite space game before that.
Looking at the stars from my stroller was my favorite space game before that.

While I salute your mentioning X4, I'm concerned that you don't have any other X games (in particular the X3 trilogy), listed before that! 😯 .

IF you haven't played the older games, you really should! 😀🤘 .
