I've always tried to have reasonable expectations, but what I do think Frontier gets wrong is what it termed in its financial report as the 'Release and Nurture' system of releasing games, which I would assume from the wording is to release a game and steadily add improvements, to 'nurture' it.
Which in turn i guess you could say is a slow, calculating, low-risk and safe, conservative approach towards delivering just enough to develop the game, prolong it and keep it just in the green and away from the risk of going into the red. No big financial gambles, no wild investments, no showing your cards or making promises you may feel obliged to stick with even if they result in more financial commitments.
It make's sense to me when i consider how they had various assets in place which were leaked previously, but it took them so long to drip feed them into the game. The scorpion being one example, it was leaked about 2 years before they introduced it.
Now, that's fair i guess, they are a company, that is their model, its their decision and their money. Of course.. as a gamer.. I think its fair to comment that this approach can grow thin with players, especially when a game has been out for a number of years and you need to keep it some bit fresh.
I'm sure some may read this and think, well hasn't been Frontier releasing constant updates, improvements and implementing the Thargoid war. Surely that's a big deal and some bit of a gamble. Yes, I guess I would partially agree there. But the crux of my problem, is the lack of 'general content'. You have the Thargoid war, Brilliant! You have an interesting narrative that is genuinely very good, Brilliant! But I'm starting to slowly get that thought in my head now... 'okay, but what about other parts of the Elite Dangerous game I enjoy?'. What about expanded on foot features, new weapons, new ships, new suits, new fauna, planet features, possible side stories, ground base developments and added styles / buildings, mission loops, expanded on foot mining, mysteries, reasons to explore particular parts of the galaxy (clue based hunts, interesting outposts with odd/fun missions etc etc), things like that, we all could go on and on and on with suggestions. But you get my point....
Again, I know some are thinking, jesus your damned if you do and damned if you dont. I understand that, but I just hope the entire game is improved. As frontier says, the game is whatever you make it and what you enjoy, so I think there should be some focus on different areas of the game and a reasonable release of new 'general' content.
