I keep seeing complaints about how FDev's invariable buckling to demands from: "forum dads" constantly waters down great-sounding things, that the game not only could have, but did have, but can not off the top of my head recall ever seeing anybody who has been griping about something being placated (...other than maybe the more recent removal of the ill-fitting Odyssey plant scanning mini game (...where the querulants were maybe more interested in a more contextually suitable replacement for it, than its complete purge) ...Ok, they did tone down the casino bling-blong of the first pass on engineering, too, after a floodwave of disgust), and have always just had the impression that FDev follows their own plan/game testing evaluations, without really taking input from players...
Maybe I'm just not paying attention to the right threads... Maybe the fact that I never partook in the prerelease discussions (there was some mythical design forum, or suchlike, apparently), has something to do with my blindness...
There are plenty of forum dad facepalms / ruined birthdays where shrieking has led to a more vanilla game- mainly down to combat related things (such as gimbals and sensors, shields and hull, PP NPCs being nerfed then toned down more) various unneeded buffs to ships (double FdL, Vulture PP being the worst), engineering effects (about 50% of them) all cutting off better mechanics now because it would require more thought...all the time dads never actually using those mechanics or modules instead out exploringNever described anyone as a forum dad but there have been lots of contentious decisions & changes, some went what hindsight suggests was the sensible route, some didn't.
Supercruise behaviour changes were before my time (before launch). The supercruise flight model we have now is simplistic but works.
Ship transfer fees was a hot topic, it went to a community vote. The current system of not being instant won 70% of the vote but those that wanted instant transfer were bitter for a long time after.
I had a big problem myself with the removal of the old discovery scanner modules when the current discovery mechanism was added in 3.3. A lot of people felt the old one made discovery too easy, including the devs. I still find this stance bemusing considering how easy it is now.
The bio scanning mini-game being removed also included increasing the minimum distance for the subsequent scans. I think it was a sensible choice and I think most agree the twitch based mini game wasn't in keeping with the activity but some still feel it should be harder, or a different skill based mini game be implemented. Most players still don't do it at all even without the scanning mini-game & it had a massive, way over the top credit buff in update 14. Very few complaints about that
In one of the Odyssey Alpha builds there was a way to access the SRV in a training mission and it was discovered that the SRV driving model had been altered significantly (simplified). Some liked it (those who didn't like the old/current way it drove & many proposed it be made the new way drive-assist on was. I think in part the Scorpion was added to help those that don't like the Scarab, it does seem much less 'wayward' than the Scarab.
I think the Forum dad moniker is just a way to insult people that have a different view. Different people want different things, it's rare that a solution can be found that makes everyone happy.
Some probably still are, and some of the reaction was shock that they lost the vote especially as it seemed FDev originally favoured the instant transfer model.Never described anyone as a forum dad but there have been lots of contentious decisions & changes, some went what hindsight suggests was the sensible route, some didn't.

Yes there was a lot of upset over this change, personally I rather like this new system it feels more involved than the old version and it made exploring in ships that didn’t turn well in supercruise much nicer.I had a big problem myself with the removal of the old discovery scanner modules when the current discovery mechanism was added in 3.3. I agree, the twitch based game was so totally wrong for collecting a sample, it might have been got away with sat in the cockpit analysing the samples in a lab module but even there it would be the wrong sort of mini game. The bio scanning mini-game being removed also included increasing the minimum distance for the subsequent scans. I am still of the opinion that there are some on the forums who are only here to be unhappy about stuff. In one of the Odyssey Alpha builds there was a way to access the SRV in a training mission and it was discovered that the SRV driving model had been altered significantly (simplified). I voted for instant transfer, but I changed my mind later (after it was implemented) as it helps preserve the sense of scale. Even though somethings are instant like handing yourself in is an instant transfer to prison or your ship blowing up and you're instantly sent to the last port you visited.Ship transfer fees was a hot topic, it went to a community vote. I'd like an express delivery button that costs a % more than standard delivery, but everything is delivered in 15 minutes or less. It's no fun if you feel like doing some mining but your mining ship and modules are 45 minutes away.
Yes mines in the loft somewhere. Frontier: Elite 2 on my amiga 600 those were the days!btw I own the same box your avatar pic is from![]()

i do play another MMORPG for 5 years to date, they have the same repetitive content, but keep giving me progress, new equipment, new region, new content, adjustment here and there, QOL update, new class, they keep updating in a good pace so they keep me playing the game, i just hope elite could do the same or even better.well, this whole game is about repeating stuff.
If you like it, you will repeat it for years.
If not, well.
There are plenty of other games to try.
Its frankly someone saying what a lot of others think and know to be true over the years. What I see in a post like this is someone lashing out, insulting those that took a different view.
And do you pay a one time fee to play that game or monthly subscription?i do play another MMORPG for 5 years to date, they have the same repetitive content, but keep giving me progress, new equipment, new region, new content, adjustment here and there, QOL update, new class, they keep updating in a good pace so they keep me playing the game, i just hope elite could do the same or even better.
To be honest I think FD did not anticipate the route and outcomes that ED has charted- FD are not in the GaaS scene really. And do you pay a one time fee to play that game or monthly subscription?
I've never really understood the lack of subscription for Elite given the continued updates.
It is already too late to try to turn things around. A lot of time and money would have to be invested in this.
I don't see that at the moment. Meanwhile, more and more community breaks away and projects around the game give up.
It's not the end of the world, but it's sad.
It will probably go on like this for a while, but the big wishes and ideas will remain so.
I like to be positively surprised.
