Analyzing required animals by Taxonomical group

So in light of the new dlc, how do we feel about the following groups:
  1. Sloths
  2. monitors
  3. malgasy carnivores
  4. apes
  5. suines
Do you feel they are complete? Do we need more?
1. I didn't need one in the first place, so even though I would have preferred another species, I really hope we won't lose another spot with a sloth.
2. I really wanted a Australian monitor, but for now it got very low on my wishlist. I'm fine with what we have.
3. Definitely a group that needed something, so it's nice to have some representation. I belive this was the last "essential" carnivore, from now on I can live without (which doesn't seem likely, TBH)
4. Didn't need any more, so the Lar gibbon is kind of a wasted slot. Really hope for more monkeys in the future
5. The RRH wasn't high on my wishlist, so my prioritie is still a peccary species and a wild boar would be nice to complete Europe.

1. The gibbon finishes apes off.
2. The Asian Water Monitor adds abit of diversity but it dosent complete the group anymore than the nile monitor does.
3. RRH brings diversity to the suin roster but a peccary is still needed.
4. Fossa makes the viveroid family nearly complete. A civet would still be nice though.
5. The sloth also nearly completes the xeretheran family but a tamadua would still be nice.

Honestly, I'm done with apes and want monkeys. Other primates, like tarsiers and lorises, are ok, but I don't think they're needed.
Aye aye?

Sloths - Personally I'm fine because I'm one of about 2 people that actually prefer the one we got. But 100% understand why others are unhappy about it. Will we get a second though, probably not, and I don't think we should expect it either.

Monitors - Done, done , we're done.
Malgasy Carnivores - Pretty much done.
Apes - Done, don't need another ape now.
Suines - Like Sloths, it's okay if this is all we get. But I'd love to get the Wild Boar and would be fantastic to have a Peccary as well. I don't know if I can say "need" to them, but maybe something like a luxury need? Like...I don't "need need" either, but I could pretend to and it would certainly go a long way to represent the group.

1. I would like a two-toed sloth. I'd prefer Linne's.
2. Complete.
3. Complete, another would be cool. certainly not necessary but super welcome (assuming there are others in zoos).
4. Complete.
5. A more temperate species would be awesome. Wild Boar as others have said.

Probably late to this so:

1 - sloths - I'm probably the second of two people who vastly prefers the addition of the brown Throated over the two toed. I consider sloths represented enough
2 - monitors - would be nice to see some Oceania monitors before I can consider the monitors complete
3 - Malagasy carnivores - complete, fossa is all that is needed
4 - apes - controversial but I would want a second orangutan before apes are complete for me
5 - suines - not even close , more more more

Dot really want or need another sloth. The Fossa deserved a spot on the roster more then any of the other animals in this pack. The lar gibbon is ok but I would have been fine with just the siamang. Definitely preferred a monkey in its place. Don’t need or want anymore monitors. As for the red river hog it’s ok I’d been just as happy with a wild boar. Don’t get me wrong with the five animals their all great in their own way and at the end of the day bring five more great animals to build for. I’ll definitely buy this pack but animal wise I rank this pack towards the bottom or middle honestly. On the subject of animals based on taxonomy itself I honestly hate it. Don’t get me wrong I can definitely see we need more primates and SA animals but it’s a very unrealistic way of looking at zoos in general and animal needs for the game in general. Let’s face facts African animals always dominate the majority of zoos and rightfully so. Lions, rhino, hippo, elephants, etc are big ticket animals. Asia and South America generally do well in most zoos as well. NA seems to do ok probably better in the states of course. Australian animals are pretty hard to come by in smaller zoos in the US as compared to the major ones. I know this does not represent a picture for every country but imo taxonomy needs for the game do very little for me. I’d love to have more African animals along with more animals from all over the globe and taxonomy has nothing to do with it. Point is there’s still many popular animals in zoos missing and even tho their mainstream in popularity and offer very little modding wise for the most part it still seems weird to not include as compared to a animal super rare in zoos just because from a taxonomy standpoint it fills a niche.

1. Sloths - complete for me.
2. Monitors - I would like to see an Australian species such as the perentie before I consider monitor complete. We have approx 27 species of monitor here and they're very common in zoos.
3. Malagasy Carnivores - complete
4. Apes - complete
5. I would like to see the collared peccary but i think this is otherwise complete to me

  1. Sloths: still need the tamadua (they were grouped together) but I'm very happy we got a sloth
  2. Monitors: something from Oceania would be very good and make a nice trio of monitors, but not needed
  3. Malagasy Carnivores: done
  4. Apes: done
  5. Suines: a peccary is essential, and the wild boar would be very good for Europe

Could I add the (Chacoan) Peccary? It has a cool story and is just as different from in-game pigs as the wild boar. Its in its own family and in its own biome. I actually after doing research think it is a bit more essential than the boar.

Not very likely that we will get all of them.

I understand that for players from Oceania the echidna and the kiwi might be essential, but not for me personally. On the other hand a stork, ibis and spoonbill are essential to me but not to most people apparently.

The rest i agree, although i'll say that a freshwater turtle species is also essential and more galliformes as well. And maybe not essential but i do think we need at least a couple more small cats.

But yes, even though flying birds are EXTREMELY ESSENTIAL (mainly parrots, macaws, toucans, owls, eagles, vultures) and without them a zoo game will never be complete, i would be happy if the animals in this list are the only animals added to the game.

I think you could do quite a few monkeys from Africa such as...

A baboon
A guenon from the Congo
A colobus monkey
A vervet monkey
A mangeby

Great summary! Thanks so much. @yoav_r these are really handy resources.

I thought there was more consensus around blackbuck (or an Asian deer/antelope) as essential, but guess not. Blackbuck, a muntjac, a guineafowl, a gecko, a river turtle, and a goose are the main things I'd still realistically want outside of this solid list. There are individual species I'd place above some that are here (e.g. hyraxes, golden pheasant/monal, guereza, etc.) but I don't think of as essential to complete the roster.

On India/Africa for OW monkeys: I'm admittedly coming at this from an Indian's perspective, but I think the game could gain a lot from having at least one primate from one of the world regions where they're most iconic.

Kiwi (any species)
I'd say that's just because most folks don't actually know what the different kiwi species are. The only one kept in international collections is the North Island brown kiwi, which is also the most common in captivity here in NZ (I think Willowbank Wildlife Reserve breeds great spotted kiwis but I'm unsure).

According to ZTL, there are 5 captive species of kiwi in New Zealand, with only Apteryx mantelli present in Europe. Wellington Zoo has A. owenii and other 3 species are in Christchurch (Willowbank Wildlife Reserve) and Waiau (West Coast Wildlife Centre). But I'm no expert on kiwis so I don't know how different are those species among them, or if those 2 places are similar to a typical zoo or more like projects for captive breeding and release in the wild.
