Thargoid FPS (with Drones) in Update 15 - Preview Footage

Take a deep breath and try to have a more positive mindset. You're getting more content, for free! I bet you could even enjoy it if you went into it without being determined not to.
Seriously, constructive feedback on content that you have played is fine, but ragging on new content you haven't even tried yet as being terrible is just ridiculous.

I'm glad that we're getting more content, but Fdev has known for years that we want to interact with the Thargoids in-person rather than drones.

There's probably no more money in Elite Dangerous. With Console dead, and half of playerbase left cause game specs in Odyssey are too high now. Players, even if still play, will no longer invest money in to the game, since there is no Road Map, no info on future content what so ever. All cloak and dagger with Frontier in ED.

I am just glad they can check mark " Thargoid on-foot combat " as a new feature in the game.

PC-only doesn't mean little revenue. They're still selling cosmetics, people keep buying ED, Odyssey is decent now imo, also ship interior cosmetics could be lucrative.

I feel like what people aren't seeing is that this is just the first taste of on foot Thargoids. Like... Everyone is yelling about wanting it when we've had this slow burn buildup ever since the Proteus Wave fired. The conflict has been steadily escalating, and now we're getting a new ship type to combat us, and a never before seen enemy type on foot that is solely meant to keep us from reclaiming our settlements.

It's very clear that on foot bugs are on the way, they're just not showing their faces yet because they aren't desperate. Why bother exposing themselves to danger outside of their massive, deadly ships when they can throw biomechanical drones at us? But eventually they're gonna have to face the music. Also lets consider the fact that we still have no idea what's inside the Maelstroms, for all we know we're gonna be boarding their hive ships eventually.

I keep seeing people say things like this, which makes me think they haven't even installed the game since Odyssey dropped.

I'm playing Odyssey(and all it's features) on a 10+ year old office desktop[*], even in High GCZs, I manage a playable framerate. Over 180 million in combat bonds from last weeks CG can attest to that.
There have been multiple Console Transfers at this point.
GeForce Now is a thing, and I've heard it's even available on Xbox(not sure which ones).
Idk man, your post reads like the cringiest level of DOOOOOM.

Back on topic, people who were expecting "foot soldiers" in U15 were always going to be disappointed. I had a feeling we would get a "buffed scavenger" type drone, but not this soon. I suspect if we do see "footgoids" at some point, it will be in a controlled environment(Concourse of an invaded station, fleet carrier interior of a damaged megaship, or indeed as Raven said their actual hive installations), somewhere the pathing and AI can be improved from the current human AI, that more often than not, get stuck on a small box and just rotate like a broken aimbot.

[*]System specs: I5-3570 3.4, 8 gigs of refurbished RAM of indeterminate origin, PNY GT 710 2gb, Win 10
Yeah my graphics look like I'm playing on a Playstation Two-and-a-half, but the framerates not bad. On foot averages 20-26, sometimes 17 in GCZs. Space flight is stable at 30, even while fighting 'Goids at an atmospheric port.

Why does Frontier always do this cloak and dagger type of updates? Why can't they be normal developers?
Inform players in advance that they are working on on-foot Thargoid combat, release few art pictures inbetween, some info behind what they wish to achieve with this?
N O R M A L way of doing things ... :alien:
Because they are going for that "first time" and "discovery" game experience. If everything was briefed beforehand, where would the excitement of discovering the new be?

If they had of put the "I am your father" line in the trailers for The Empire Strikes Back, you could have bet that there would have been a lot of dissection of the trailer and Episode IV, and the right conclusion would have been reached. There would also been no shock if Episodes I-III had been aired first. That's why new viewers are always told to watch in release order (with Rogue 1 probably coming as the seventh to be watched).

It is often said these days, many want instant gratification unlike decades ago when patience was the norm.

I think the thing that I find strangest is the comment about the Scavengers deconstructing the Thargoid crashed ships. Obviously there is a clue in their names but It just doesn't seem to fit with their behaviour.

I always thought they were cleaning the mycoid off the ships so that they could take off again. I assumed that was why they appear to have crash landed on Barnacle sites after being struck by the virus, so the Meta Alloys could be used to help repair them.

It just seems a bit odd to me.

On the ground mission front, Fireytoad took a different approach and made it into a sort of command centre "found footage" style. Which I think shows more like a team attempting the missions would be like.

New thagoid ship is kinda weak, seems much weaker than an basic interceptor for its dps and might have even less hull than these, and I guessing that salvo or two from any of my plasma charger bulids will make short work of these... Despite being fast (no doubt it will be fastest thagoid vessel, it looked around 580-600 m/s to Me), they also dont evade as much as would one expect, and it does indeed tend to kinda hover in front of its opponent, waiting to be shot at... but atleast its four-way missile attack is cool, and like always, sound effects are top-tier.

They also appear to not have hearts, but rather fixed amount of hull, much like scouts.

And if Fdev player was able to hit it with AX missiles, then any decent plasma chargers or shards user will hit it even easier.
At 1v1, these are no diffrent than scouts, if can be quick work with few salvos, with "right" AX bulids. But if these would be in a group, backing interceptors, I can see how they might be a bit problem for slower ships, mainly because of thier lighting attack that slows down a lot, and makin random malfunctions. Thats why I hope they will be not just 1v1 but added into all thargoid combat scenarios.

Revenats on other hand, its cool that oddysey if finnaly getting some content added, but its only outdoor feature, and if thier vision ranges are similar to that of skimmers or other npcs, then it gonna be easy to evade them entirely. Still kinda provides some thargoid danger to conquered settlements, apart to usual danger to when ship is not sent away.

Its also another reason to use scorpion and thats good thing. Not sure if Ive seen it right at video, but it looked like scorpion missile was enough to take it down, while it took litte dmg from ar-50, wich could be not even at G5, but that still suggest that revenants might be weak vs explosive dmg, and somewhat resistant to kinetic dmg.

But again, its outdoor danger only, its still missing some thargoid themselfs in person, who depsite being larger than humans, they would still fit inside our settlements bulidings.
I know that buldings are shut down and closed when plant is offline, but I doubt that any such closed doors are any obstacle to any thargoid. Especially when they detect an cmdr, and decide to hop in and say hi, droping from thargoid scout, with mandatory yellow beam. Now that would be something cool.

Still, thats better than nothing I must admit, an combat version of thargoid scavengers or whatever they are called.

Btw. Those whole revenats thargoid drones kinda feels like it should be around since first thargoid surface site was found. These sites always was lacking something exacly like this. I recon that revenats will start appear in those as well.

It's been a loooong time since we've had a sensical arc to follow through with in that space.

A very distinct and positive reaction I had was when I went to a Guardian Ruin and first encountered a sentinel. I knew some danger was going to be there based on reveals, but nothing more specific than that. When it first raised out of the ground I was like.... hmmm... it's not attacking me.... ooop, yes it is... oh handy, I can dodge these slow moving rounds pretty easy.... oh good it's stopped, I can... wait, incoming missile... lucky I've got shields and OH DAMN PHYSICS HATES ME.

I feel like videos like this (not a crack at OA btw, obviously FD has released this footage to streamers with their blessings for a particular date) undermine that "First time" and "discovery" game experience... I guess I'm looking at this going "OK, they're spongey, and have hitscan weapons. I suppose this means that we butter up with some AOE dumbfires then land?" instead of what was in the video which was a lot of "shoot a little bit then take cover a while" sort of stuff. That's a choice (one I'm not going to judge until the game goes live) but that sense of "discovery" and "first time" is already dissipated.

Nonetheless... I look forward to the threads from thargoid on-foot combat complaining they're too tanky... personally I'm here for the maelstroms.

You and I have very different definitions of "not bad". Unless of course you are saying it's not bad for that potato you are playing games on, in which case I guess you have a point, relatively-speaking..
I appreciate you undermining the entire point of my post that Odyssey is MORE THAN PLAYABLE on antiquated machinery, as well as GeForce Now available to those with better internet than I, just to apparently elitist shame my backup rig, that miraculously still runs elite satisfactorily TO ME(someone that actually enjoys and plays the game).

If you couldn't still win GCZs at 17fps as I do, perhaps it's a skill issue. Or in your case, I more suspect its the fact you don't even play this game(cough X4).

So far they've only been shown in maelstrom systems where guardian weapons aren't really viable, so good luck with your plasma chargers or shards.

On an aside... fighting your way out of a Thargoid structure chamber when it's angry on-foot is lots of fun.

Thargoids get a Krull inspired space ship, but when will Pioneer Supplies stock telekinetic shuriken misleadingly named after a polearm?
The real power was with the literally hot babe though. AKA as flame unit, which I would not say no to. Doesn't feel right fighting bugs without flamers.
Not me! I strongly endorse this "Elite is Great!" thread.

This is an "Elite is Great!" thread, right?
I think it's more of a "ehh", thread.

Agreed. The content isn't even released yet, and people are complaining. Some people can't be pleased, and the rest of us suffer because of them.
I thought their approach for U14 of not saying anything and just having "surprise! Thargoid War!" when people logged in was pretty strong. Doesn't give people time to decide in advance they're not going to like it, and then when it does release all the "what's this, what do we do?" conversation overwhelms it.

(And sure, it wasn't for everyone and it was never going to be, but even the people who hated it weren't saying "you should have told us earlier something we weren't going to like was coming")

Thargoid drones looking around abandoned on foot bases kind of feels like the inverse of how we used to look around their surface sites. I wonder if they're just exploring settlements trying to figure out what they're for or if they're actually looking for something.
By the way, do we have any confirmation on if Thargoids know about humanity in the sense of individual humans flying the ships with different motives? I was under the impression they don't seem to really comprehend individuality in other lifeforms.
