Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

One day I suppose, we'll get enough credits to visit Magrathea for a custom built planet.

Not enough sympathy for idle billionaires in this galaxy is there? :D

...meanwhile i'm spending quite a bit of spare cash on "exploration" - just lost Osiris for the first time in years to a Cyclops & a pack of scouts - we were just trying to get through there to the real party... ;p

Some weapons cost more than some ships indeed, but note that some ships also cost much more than others and some A-grade modules can cost more than the ship’s base price itself - or several times the cost of a less expensive ship… a beam laser can cost more than a basic ship - so it’s quite understandable that an upgraded on-foot weapon can cost quite a bit more than an entry level ship - as with all things in Elite, base price is one thing, but costs increase significantly from there on up… in line with (hopefully not just the obstacle to^) the effort required to acquire them.

I am happy with the price of a bigger more capable ship being more expensive than a less capable one, I am gobsmacked by the cost of large A rated modules but my disbelief remains suspended enough that I am not made to question the game. That a top rated ‘rifle’ can cost more than even the most basic starship snaps me out of the game. The issue when I am forced to think about it is ships are probably too cheap.

To be fair, that is the top-earning exobio species afaik - and so that “gold” has long been mined within 500ly of Sol with the recent rush - i doubt one will find much undiscovered 5x bonus Stratum Tectonicas within 1000ly of Sol now even… ;]
That is an awful lot of systems so it is quite possible that there is more than we think in there, especially in directions that don’t lead to anywhere interesting or scenic.

What I am up to is collecting some codex entries, I just visited a system with two black holes and a neutron star which makes for an exciting arrival especially as the neutron star isn’t the primary.

It probably hasn't been cleaned out completely, considering the "less than 0.01%" factor (there are lots of systems in Elite's virtual galaxy and still only a tiny fraction have been discovered) - just more typical routes are by now well-travelled... again, with this kind of reward, it encourages explorers to go off the beaten tracks - there might well still be some 100m Stratum nearby, almost under one's nose... :]

...and if one does get really far out to really interesting places & systems like these (which does require quite a bit of game proficiency/time investment), there are now better rewards for it - all in all i think the exo buff is one way of rebalancing in-game agency (broadly measured in credits/buying power) between explorers and combat types, what with the war making quite a few AX billionaires & all ;]

Got the Thargoid Pulse Neutralizer at last. I managed to get all 5 of the Massive Energy Surge Analytics in one visit to the Maelstrom, but I had to stay so long that I ran out of Caustic Sinks and wound up with 1% hull and a breached canopy before I was ready to retreat.

Needless to say, I didn't survive the jumps back to my carrier. I think caustic damage was still ticking.

Anyway, I got the new tool installed and ready to try.

I'll let you know how it goes :)

Pic of the Thargoid pulse headed my way. It really tosses you around when it hits.

I successfully entered the center of the Maelstrom, and flew around the Titan.

It was certainly interesting. I definitely had the feeling of being "behind enemy lines" while in there.

I have no reason to go there, other than sightseeing (and to say I went -- it was a sort of personal challenge to me).

Thargoids are icky. That is all I can say.

Anyway, I did what I set out to do, and it was an interesting (and very frustrating) experience overall. I learned a lot, so that's good.

It remains to be seen if I'll actually need to go in there later :)

But for today, success. And a screenshot or two.

By the way, one caustic sink is barely enough. Same with 1 heatsink. Anyone know where you go to unlock the Sirius Heatsink? I think it has more ammo.

Huge congrats on getting to the heart of the storm! Great pics too :)

...i've been taking a break from trying to get the TG Anti-Pulse thing to work for me - hopping about a few crash sites atm, after a tip off that i'd find some of those very elusive Settlement Defense Plans around here somewhere - haven't found any as yet, but some other useful bits including NOC Data - so my pic of the day is not nearly as well inspired... in fact i think i'll leave the evidence of road rule violations discreetly in the attachments section ;]

Yes the otherwise quite passive/neutral scavs tend to get quite hot under the collar when one starts performing mad science experiments in their control/navigation room? :D

…was wondering if you had tried the TG Pulse Neutraliser yet? I had trouble with it being “under-powered” on my Challenger, so fitted it to my trusty old ’Conda, along with four of the caustic sinks - still, even with three forays into Oya, i kept getting kicked 50 to 80km by the energy pulse…

…made sure i had four pips to systems - is there some special trick to the timing i wonder?
The TG pulse neutralizer works in a very similar way to the standard pulse neutralizer. You have to get the timing right to get through.
There are some videos out there that go deeper into this matter - I think I had seen one from The Buur Pit...
Not enough sympathy for idle billionaires in this galaxy is there?
I think Zachary Rackham's results in the upcoming federal election might give us a hint about that...

It works just like the Shutdown Field Neutralizer.

You wait until the blue pulse bubble almost hits you, then hold down the neutralizer button until the pulse passes. 4 pips to SYS makes it last the longest.

I didn't have any trouble with it.

Ah TY again - i thought it might be something to do with timing, but got tired of experimenting, only getting about one attempt a run, after interdictions on the way and all... i'd been trying to activate it at first sign (blueish lighting/lightning in the clouds) of the energy pulse, earlier and earlier - next time i'll wait a bit for the pulse itself - and keep the trigger down :]
