Early Acquisition of the 'Pulse Wave Xeno Scanner' - a mess up compounded by another mess up.

Well it seems not for the first time FDev have inexplicably messed up by allowing the PWXS into the game before it's time and before the CG ended.
As I don't usually bother with the forums for reasons which will no doubt become obvious with the replies to this post, I was not aware of this mess up.
So of course, like a lot of other people I have been beavering away for 7.5hrs straight on the CG to make the top 25% in the vain hope of acquiring a PWXS for free, in return for my efforts.
I know that usually these modules are 'bought' by giving in AX and/or guardian materials and I wasn't sure if I'd have what was needed or if I'd need to grab some from inside the Maelstrom core.
So I decided to grind for 7 hrs and acquire it that way so I could get the item to use as content for my Sunday livestream. All good.
Then it turns out that Frontier have compounded their error by unbelievably allowing people who acquired this module in return for credits to actually keep them!
What was so bad about removing the item and returning the credits stating that they were made available in error.
This has totally negated people's efforts and time that was put in doing the CG. It disrespects them and diminishes their efforts.
Mistakes happen yes, but this was not corrected properly. FDev know they made a mistake, the admitted it but they let people keep the reward from this exploit.
How is that fair on anyone doing the CG??
I have tried so hard to stay positive with ED when others have not or have jumped ship. But mistakes like this and decisions like this make if very hard for me to stick with it.
Clearly the correct course of action here was to remover the PWXS from people who acquired it via the incorrect means. It completely disses the effort and time people have put in to do it the right way.
If there's a car dealer with a £2000 car and it turns out they advertised it for £20.00 my mistake, do you think they for one moment, they'd say "oh well it was our mistake so you take the car for £20."
I don't think so!
It's enough to deal with all the bugs in the game right now, it is slacking and I have to question the focus of the devs on some of these things.
Things like this don't help and when you compound your error by allowing people to gain from it too... I dunno who's making these decisions, but it's just not right.
Anyway, rant over. I've left a lot of meat on the bone there for potential trolls who can't wait to put me in my place or tell me nobody cares (even though it's not them who I need to care) etc etc. :)
I've said my piece and I'm seriously losing my grip on this game if the devs can't even be bothered.

I agree with the spirit of your rant, but imo removing modules from players may break stuff in ways we cannot foresee. Especially when there isn't a switch/code/whatever in place to do that before (my assumption since there wasn't a precedent).

They've removed plenty of stuff from CMDRs in the past. Credits, modules gained via exploits, certain modules that were simply depreciated (the old pre-Engineer special variants of weapons that some had saved from the gamma), etc.

I can't imagine removing the PWXS, if people that weren't supposed to have them, would cause any technical issues. I just assume that they don't really care anymore.

I see, then I guess FDev have made their decision.

I'd disagree, should of left them at the military hubs and had the goal for placing at the rescue ships. all the other scanners are there already. And they did say they hid stuff...
the enhanced scanner is better anyway.

While I agree that the early release was unfortunate and that the players exploiting this mistake (and make no mistake, everyone who got one early knew they should not have it) should have had the module removed, this sentiment baffles me. It does every time a player claims to be "disrespected".

In what way does other players having the module before you influence you or your game? How does it negate or diminish the efforts in the CG? The answer is: It doesn't, except for FOMO and maybe a it of envy.

The CG still technically needed to reach Tier 1 for the module to become available*. If you hauled (or, as in my case, hunted bounties) and reached the top 25%, you will still get your module at the time you were expected to. Nothing changed for you. In my view, all this "disrespect", "diminishing efforts" and all that is making mountains out of molehills. So other players got the module before you. Big whoop. It didn't influence me. I was a bit afraid of spoilers initially, but there weren't any, really. We all know what is to be expected, because we all know the new Titan commodities that we will be able to gather from them. Nothing about that changed.

*yes, for a while it looked like it would not; personally, I had no doubt, because haulers gonna haul. Also, even if the hauling CG had failed, there would probably have been some handwavium about the successful protection efforts something something we managed to start production here is your module.

We'll see if the modules will get sold for credits after the CG finishes.
However, if the modules get sold for materials... 😒

You guys need to show a bit more empathy - this week you all get a shiny new module, whereas the Aegis Early Access supporters don't get anything!

Let's hope fdev agree to add some Aegis Early Access decals into the game - I liked "I ❤️ Aegis Early Access" as an idea, though really the "I joined Aegis Early Access and all I got was a lousy PWXS" would be my favourite (though I guess it is a lot of text for a decal 🤔 )

Oh, and more modules for Aegis Early Access pls, the beta test was a great success (y)

Frontier's general approach to "things acquired from bugs" has been "play on from here" except in a very few cases. The exceptional cases have tended to be ones where the process to use the bug was so convoluted that you couldn't possibly do it accidentally, and the impact of using it was very high.

In this case:
- the module will be available anyway soon
- it doesn't give you access to any spoilers (we knew those commodities existed from the market since U15 released)
- there's no use right now for those commodities except selling them and there are much more efficient ways to make credits
- by the time there is a use for them a few days head start on collection will be irrelevant

They'll have assessed that support calls from people who bought it thinking it was the normal xeno scanner and then being confused where it went (not many, but probably more than zero) are actually more of an issue than a few forum complaints which will be forgotten entirely a couple of weeks later. For all the talk of people boycotting the CG, etc. it got basically exactly the same tonnage as the previous trade CG.

While it is a little frustrating that this was released early and some were able to take advantage of that mistake, it hasn't really affected my game in any way beyond that. I've handed in 243,228,260 Cr in bounties getting to the middle of the Top 10%, had fun doing it and will get my free PWXS when it's officially released. I'm happy.

Same here. Hasn't affected me one little bit and I now have a free module in the post.

I haven't contributed to the CGs at all, but will go out and mooch some when they launch.

Is that better or worse than contributing to the CG, then grabbing some when they launched accidentally early, and FD doesn't strip them away? 🤷‍♂️

It's not a big deal imo...

I was initially concerned that there would be a significant fall in tonnage for the CG (there was talk in the CG thread of it failing) though it did push past tier 1 obviously.
Had the CG failed that would have caused an issue as only the exploit users would have had access.

So I decided to grind for 7 hrs and acquire it that way
you spent 7 hours grinding a couple of hundred thousand credits? ([edit] OK, 800K credits) You assumed materials would be required but they aren't so no compounding of any errors has occurred.

What you are missing in that analogy is that this is a video game and credits are meaningless.
I'm from OZ, and if an item is mispriced in a shop, you get it for free. Got lucky one day and scored 4 big bottles of laundry liquid, because it still had a half price tag from last week on it, and it went to full price. Instead of 4 x $18, the bottles would have been 4 x $36. Price paid: $0!
Shop was at fault, I win. No backsies.
(For my Aussie friends: Woolies honors this!)

Sometimes there are mistakes in video games, and if someone acquires it while it's there, they GMs usually let players keep it.
There are heaps of stories like that from World of Warcraft, where something wasn't meant to drop, dropped anyway, and when the GMs noticed, they let those few players keep the items.

With every update there will be lots of issues when Frontier adds something and breaks other items that were working. It happens every time especially with the latest Thargoids. Future exploits will show up, miatakes are made, experienced players will take advantage and Frontier will eventually correct them not to please everyone. The point is Elite Dangerous will always have issues so getting upset over them doesn't help miuch.
