Elite Dangerous Update 15 NOW LIVE - Release Notes

That's my point; there's nothing to do with them.

Why not let us use them for something, even if it's something relatively small?

There's nothing to do with them......................yet.

Lets see what the next updates bring before assuming they were added for no other purpose.

Alec beat me to it and put it in a much more coherent way lol

I dare say that will come. That's the way FD tend to do things, add the mat's, and then add the use for those mat's later (e.g. unclassified relics and massive energy surge analytics for the pulse neutraliser unlock).
I guess the narrative goes.. A) new material available, B) players gather while background events occur to find uses, C) new thing becomes available via Galnet article or CG.

The request would then in effect be to do away with step B, and just jump straight to C. Though, being that the galaxy is working in real-time, it naturally follows that there would be a period of "wot's this 'ere then" time before the eureka moment.

Fair enough, but as-is, I have no reason to play the game yet. I can see the titans just fine via livestreams or videos, and why waste my time collecting mats that probably won't have any use for quite some time?

If they gave them an immediate purpose, I'd have a reason, even if only a small one, to go there. If I want to see pretty things, there are plenty of pretty things I haven't seen yet, so one more isn't a big deal to me.

Preparation?
Fun stuff to do?
O7

Some people might enjoy that I guess, but for me, I need to have my gameplay have context. I enjoy combat in part because it's making me a better pilot permanently, or trying out some new build.

I've been thinking about heading over to the Thargoid Sites to scoop up some mats for premium AX Munitions, for example; why not maybe make the Titan mats allow some super-premium AX munitions synthesis with +15% damage or something? That'd be pretty neat. Or even better, an alternative Advanced weapon synthesis option! So I don't need to grind guardian tech components!

If the one thing stopping you playing the game is some new materials don't so far have a purpose, you probably should just go and do something more interesting instead.

That's not quite what I'm saying. It's not that it stops me from playing the game, it's that it doesn't give me any reason to play the game.

IE, if they add a new ship or module, I need to log in to test it out myself, try builds, re-explore existing content, etc. It basically gives new value to every part of the game.

But the main addition this update was the Titan, which doesn't apply to anywhere but in maelstrom systems. Going there doesn't even contribute to the war effort at all. Why should I go there, instead of watching a video about it? Sure it looks cool and all, but there are infinite cool visuals in this game, so one more, even as cool as the titan is, isn't that big of a deal to me.

I amazed sometimes that even with so many things in common;
  1. Play Elite
  2. Read the forums
  3. Post to the forums
  4. Human
  5. Ability to misunderstand each other
How different people can be.
  • Play Elite to play Elite
  • Play Elite for specific bits of Elite.

And then either introduce a new gameplay element (or a bug) to render the module obtained with said mats useless, and start the cycle/grind all over again with something new.

The bit I don't get...
if they add a new ship or module, I need to log in to test it out myself, try builds, re-explore existing content, etc. It basically gives new value to every part of the game.
How is it that different to

?
If they are the same things in different orders (i.e. the way I see it), how is it different with your point of view?

The older thargoid structure / wake data and other materials have been there just for flavor for years and there's other underused materials too (Lead/Boron used just for synthing ammo for weapons almost no one uses) and Rhenium only used to unlock said weapons. Some odyssey goods/data are just vendor trash too.

It's likely we'll get something to use some of the stuff later on, but almost guaranteed that some of the materials will be forgotten and left over just to confuse newbies and clutter up the UI.

Okay but you're saying even just adding a little bit of material gathering that has some explicit purpose would be enough to get you to play, enough of a reason. I'm just not sure that is a good enough reason for me. I stay away for long periods not because there isn't anything to do - there's lots - but I tend to return when I fancy flying a spaceship again and then go and do something or other, potter about with any new stuff.

I guess what I'm really saying is waiting for little bits of new stuff only as a reason to play doesn't seem a good idea, there will never be enough for that. A titan, cool, go and look. And then shrug and say whats next? I don't think it really works (for me) playing like that with ED.

Yeah... I can't wait for the inevitable Titan-farming CG for yet another "unique" Thargoid utility module.😑

Yup. At one point in time, there was no point to creating an Unclassified Relic except "Yo look at this green thing that used to be a blue thing!", and selling them to Ram Tah and Palin for credits. And then suddenly "hey, the glowing green thing is a requirement for getting into the Maelstroms".

Elite is iterative, not instant. Stuff that has no purpose now might find one later. And either you can poke at it now because it's new, or ignore it until later when it has a prize attached to motivate you. Both approaches are valid.

Thanks for that. I drafted a response to those earlier comments along the lines of fishing being a nice excuse to go and sit by a river but I think you've said it far better.
