Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Wow, I just realized Bethesda is charging 70€ for the standard edition as well. Whisky Tango Foxtrott. Looks like I'm not going to purchase the game at realase after all. That's utterly disappointing 🤦‍♂️

£70 in UK.....plus around an extra £1k to upgrade my PC to the current recommended system?
Sigh......
It's on Gamepass too. So you can play it for 10$ for a month.
Also if you do, would advise to first wait a day or more, because Gamepass games on release often have older unrefined versions from what i heard. And takes longer to patch them.

This is going to make sequels very easy in the future, you just take a snapshot of the game, and label any future development as a new game :)

Surely you are being sarcastic here? Maybe not? No-one said anything about there being a new game, the player base has been given two different versions of the same game, one in live development, one fixed at a point where no further development will happen, a "legacy" version. Just like there are major mods for games like Skyrim that almost make it feel like a new game but you can play the unmodified version.

If you want to take that and run with it into some sort of fantasy land off you go! Every modified version of Skyrim is therefore a new game....job done.

Depend on the viewpoint but we are all allowed to have our opinions, at least in the U.S., even if evidence does not back it up.
In the context of the subject matter, I think you're conflating evidence with consensus.
I do have to give you respect I never thought I would see in my 47 years of life someone defend E.T. the game that arguably helped put that last hot knife into the Atari.
It was meant to be a rhetorical question. Though, did I say it was the greatest Atari game? I just said it wasn't as bad as it's been made out to be by faux gaming culture jockeys, like I said, there are many worse games than ET. But, if you prefer to have a lock step opinion with those and not think for yourself, then fair enough, it doesn't bother me either way, it's not really worth obsessing over, at least for me anyway. o7

Of all the clips that I have seen, I still do not understand where the approach to the planet, entering the atmosphere on the arc and landing ... all together.
I don't know about that, I've not been watching everything, but without confirmation, of which I'd be happy to be corrected with some, I think that the focus on exploration probably would mean that it won't just be POIs that you drop into, it's just that you could choose to. If it doesn't allow you to free roam in a spaceship above the surface of a planet, then that would indeed be a bit of a disappointment.

Looks like they put the extra year to good use, it'll definitely get me back to doing a little modding. It'll be fun to play with a random encounters mod in the winter, perhaps. I had a blast making quests and characters for Fallout 4, so the potential here is very interesting as I quite love the ability to implement stuff super fast with Creation Engine.

A shame it'll take janky mods or many years and changes of luck for a VR edition to properly come out. The last few games really benefited from it and slowed down the pace of absorbing content into small, eventful chunks.

According to something I saw a while back there will be the opportunity to fly across the surface of the planet....but no details, is it in your ship, I don't see how since landing is all pre-programmed, why do that when flying around in the atmosphere is possible anyway? What I am wondering is, does the flying around mean we will have a small pilotable ship that can only fly in atmosphere? It's really not clear, if your ship can only take off and land on a pre-programmed course, how do you launch and fly around the planetary surface?

Need more info, probably have to wait until gamers start posting their own in game experiences. The dearth of information and footage may indicate this may be a disspaointing aspect of the game they don't want to advertise much, or it could be much better than we think and they don't want to post spoilers.

Pure speculation here:
Ship is landed on a planet -> enter ship -> walk to nav panel -> select new landing zone somewhere else on the planet -> "cut scene" of ship flying through the atmosphere -> "spawn" at new location

Indeed, e.g. take NMS - you'll notice quite a difference in travel times in foot compared to flying. Or ED - how long it takes with SRV compared to flying. But if you just zoom across in a ship - you might miss a lot. Do the sensors pick up PoIs well enough? Or is it really built so you can go spelunking for days on foot? Do the PoIs generate depending on means of transportion? Distance between? Time spent? Are they seeded and fixed?

There will almost certainly be a lot Salty Mikes showing us what you can, or indeed can't do, the day after release, I will be waiting for those before deciding whether to try it out. I mean I don't mind pre-ordering, or even putting money down on a kickstarter, but I wouldn't for a game (or promises) that that don't tick a lot of boxes for me.

Yeah, I reckon there will be a lot of coverage and live playthroughs and it isn't much long until all that happens. I expect a pretty good overview of how the game plays out. Funny - not by critics but rather watching other people play...

So it is the same game, but we are not all playing in the same galaxy.

I did a double take when I saw that the original retail price for an Atari 2600 game adjusted for inflation is over $200.
You've convinced me to buy the watch. Given the price tag you mention of the original Atari games, getting a smart watch out of the deal for just a little bit extra seems OK. And bugs aside if they're there on launch day, I am optimistic that the game will be fine in the long run. The modding aspect to that was what tipped the balance for my optimism.

Off topic but I still have my Atari 2600 (boxed still with instructions no less) along with all the games in their original boxes with original instructions. We still play it every Christmas, family tradition. I still have my E.T. game. I was quite fond of it. Also I feel like I rescued 1 of the few that made its way to the tip. My favourite games were Empire Strikes Back and River Raid; except when there was two of us in which case it was Combat. But I liked them all - we used to go to the Hi-Fi shop and rent them out and I'd buy more based on that. Well, mum and dad bought them, not me lol!

Yes, River Raid. That was a popular concept. Carried through Raid on Bungeling Bay and culminated in Blue Max. Empire strikes back was the one with the walkers, right?
Yes, you flew a Snow Speeder - I used to be really good at it - I'm terrible now! Must be the age-induced lack-of-reflexes kicking in... Polaris was another good one, it had a mix of screen types, top-down, side-on etc. My Nan when she was alive even played Pac Man on it!

My cousin found a way to gobble the pills as PacMan nearly 95% foolproof. It was basically eating one corner as long as possible and taking the big pills to get free and clear the rest out.

That's great, just don't blame me if it all goes pear shaped though please! :D

The Atari was my older brothers', I'm pretty sure it's still in the loft at my mum's, though he may have grabbed it at one point. He wasn't really that into video games so I ended up with the C64 when that became the next thing, fortunately for me.

I still have my E.T. game. I was quite fond of it. Also I feel like I rescued 1 of the few that made its way to the tip.
It was a very early attempt at a flick screen collect 'em up arcade adventure. It was clunky and had some silly features, like the falling down a hole thing, but it was playable enough for what it was. I haven't played it since those days and don't recall too much about the objective, but the funny thing is I'm thinking that the premise was pretty similar to the original Spy Vs. Spy game, minus the two-player vs. and trap setting mechanic.

From what I read about ET, it was the fact that Atari made more cartridges than actual systems that was the main factor in what happened next. Plus of course, it wasn't a Defender / Space Invaders / Pac Man clone, so the appeal was more limited, especially for those who only wanted that type of game. Some things never change.

Empire Strikes Back was great, probably my favorite on the system. Played Kaboom a bit too along with the other regular stuff like Defender, Wizard of Wor etc.. Combat was good for two players, and was a great game to get with the system to begin with. /OT :)

Interesting; this got me thinking since I grew up on NES/SNES/successors and always had a price of about $50 US stuck in my head as a typical video game cost. I found a site with some old receipts and was seeing $60-95 today's dollars for Atari 2600 games, and Super Mario 3 at around $115, so $75-$90 (70 EUR - 70 GBP) seems about in line with historical. Considering asteroids was $93 we get a heck of a lot more content for the same money though!

Look up how much a Neo Geo game costs in today's money.
