Two Epic accounts and Frontier "native" account all downloaded the launcher very quickly. Runs trouble-free. Thanks!

I don't understand why, but the Steam version had to download a massive 47GB update and took ages (perhaps because I haven't played with the Steam account for 2 months or so). It also failed to link with my Frontier account and demanded a load of password and ID stuff. I've got it running now but it's a PITA since it's on my ex's Steam account. I wish there were some way to get the game moved to my own Steam account without losing 1200 hours of progress...

I'd imagine that if nothing else you could buy the game on you own steam account, and then link and log in with the old account's email and password?

If it's an older account (don't remember the date it changed, but 2018-2019), chances are that you could log into it with Frontier's launcher too.

Greetings Commanders.

As part of a game news round-up at the end of last week, there was a note in there to confirm that a new game launcher will be deployed today for Elite Dangerous.

New Elite Dangerous Launcher launches at 11am BST 24/07/2023
  • At 11am BST today, we will release a new launcher for Elite Dangerous on PC. This will provide Commanders with easy access to all versions of Elite that they own.
  • We do not anticipate any major downtime.
The new launcher will be available for all supported PC game platforms.
  • Steam, Epic and Oculus store fronts will all display a prompted, small update once deployment is complete.
  • Frontier standalone launcher will prompt a 'new version automatic download and install process'.
    • The Frontier standalone launcher may be a little later to provide this process than the Steam, Epic and Oculus store fronts.

Once the launcher is deployed I will notify you here in this thread and open it up for discussion!

PLEASE NOTE:
  • If any critical issue technical support is required on first experience of the new launcher deployment, please submit a customer support ticket at the following link.

Have a great day, Commanders, however see you shortly for the New Launcher adventure.
Hey Sally, just a feedback on the new launcher, i really loved the idea put into it, gave a fresh feeling when starting the game! I just miss being able to access the game's manual, do you know if there's any other way to obtain it as of now?

Four accounts. All up and running except on standalone FDev account. I can't remember the password and when I click "forgot password" and do the rigamarole, I never get an from FDev with link to change. Seven times now...nothing. And yes, I looked in Spam and Junk.

Am I alone on this? Mind numbingly frustrating.

The launcher didn't see my existing elite folder, re-downloaded everything and failed to clean up 70+ GB folder with the old version of the software.

So one further interesting thing with the Steam Link streaming--it's not quite as frozen as I initially thought. If I move the mouse around on the remote machine, I noticed the mouse position changed on the primary PC, so I moved it so the mouse was on the Log In button and clicked, and sure enough the main Launcher popped up on the main PC, even though the remote display still had a frozen display. A little more movement to the Play button and the game launched, as soon as it did the screen un-froze and showed me the game again. So it's somehow locking up video output to the streaming device, but still accepts input from the streaming device.

Laucher updated, but with a crash message, on both my PC and Steamdeck installs, but I clicked "do not send" and it continued to launch fine. Good job!

My humble opinion. Overall seems a good step to right direction. A little fewer different infos in general view is appreciated. Sadly i can't evaluate this scrolling down stuff, because i don' see it.

I too think, that this Pegi label isn't needed there, at least not so big. On the store page would be another thing.
Maybe the link to forum would be better to be on general page.

Now, a small subjective suggestion. For me the nice examples of launchers were the old Project Entropia launcher and launcher of EVE Online: Revelations II.
Last one have a Youtube clip, as a reminder.

EVE Online Revelation II login screen

You feel, that there is something very big, immense world (of course the music plays big role in this feelings).

Of course, not everyone wants to see and hear this, so it would be nice if some features could be turned off.

But as a hook, as a first impression for "young pilots" it would be priceless, imho.

Is there any way to tell the launcher where to look for the game files? Is there a way to determine the path?
The launcher is supposed to be in the directory where the game is installed, and it will look for the actual game files in a "Products" subfolder. There is no way to change that in the launcher. I had that slight issue when I installed the Frontier standalone launcher that it insisted on installing into a "EDLauncher" subdirectory of whatever install directory I chose; my solution was to install it into my game installation directory (let's call it "E:\games\Elite Dangerous", with E being my data SSD drive), which put the Launcher with all its files into "E:\games\Elite Dangerous\EDLauncher". I then moved all files from "E:\games\Elite Dangerous\EDLauncher" up one directory to "E:\games\Elite Dangerous", overwriting all files when prompted. Why the launcher installs to a subdirectory of its own... 🤷‍♂️ . My Steam installation didn't have that problem, it put the launcher where it is supposed to be ("E:\games\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous").

As for the gamefile location(s), the "Products" folder in my Steam installation directory (as well as my Epic installation) is actually a symlink to the "Products" directory of my standalone install, so all three services (standalone, Steam, Epic) share the same game file directory. I usually update the game via Steam as it is the fastest. Epic will reinstall a few files outside the "Products" directory and do a verify pass, and with the standalone install I don't have to do anything when an update is deployed.

This new launcher definitely incorporates the quality, professionalism, and attention to detail I’ve come to expect from FDEV.
Sarcasm ! hardly constructive but can agree entirely with the sentiment. sadly with the announcement today of the impending update I feel it falls on deaf ears.
Still the trepidation of Update 16 hangs over us all.

If you are a Steam user (I mean if you purchased the game on Steam) the key is never to install any kind of upgrades from the EDLauncher application. Let Steam do all the installing for you instead, it will know where to place what.

(As a bonus, you'll most probably even get faster downloads than what the Frontier servers would be capable of.)
