Elite Dangerous 'New Launcher' live today!

The game exe hasn't changed, so same logo. The launcher changed, new logo. Maybe you'll get a pleasant surprise the next time the game updates. ;)
Something along the lines of - 'an update that actually 'updates' instead of downgrading using multiple selections to achieve what was completed with just one for the sake of appearance instead of functionality' ummmm will not hold my breath
Also if they kept the same icon for executable why on earth change it ?, as the 'new' launcher icon is dire to say the least.

It's not. Support for Windows 7 was dropped nearly a year ago: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/windows-7-compatibility.606995/
This is simply the first update/change that has actually caused an issue (and can be worked around with min-ed-launcher).
That message linked doesn't state Windows support has been dropped, it only states that testing will no longer occur on a Windows7 platform.

Right now, Elite is fine under Windows 7 with the new Launcher. The Fix?

For Windows 7 users:
Open EDLaunch.exe.config
Look for ".NETFramework,Version=v4.8" ~line 10, then change the 4.8 to 4.0
Save

If an error popup appears, such as "... array[]" or " ... SSL/TTL... ", then install .NET 4.8 NOT 4.8.1
In my case, I installed .NET right after these error popups, but the launcher would crash immediately upon starting
The fix here was to uninstall .NET 4.8. Windows uninstaller doesn't actually fully uninstall .NET, for reasons, but removed the popups.
Launcher is now functioning just fine.

Yes, you miss the question - this big button "log with steam account" = "password", it must not be shown 2nd time once it pressed ever. Its presence on each launch annoys, almost same as typing password.

No I didn't miss the question. I have one account that is Steam only - I just click the "Log in with Steam" button and it starts, no password requested or required.

You don't need it with Steam - it logs in with/via steam, no need for password entry.
Let me put this another way ...

Start launcher and login you then get the Odyssey image with the CMDR in the suit and the Play option ... closing the launcher, with the X, on this screen means that when I then restart the launcher I get the image I posted previously, I have to LOGIN again with no option to "remember me" anywhere to be seen or even presnt in Settings.

Now do you see why it's ANNOYING?

Now that's something I wasn't expecting, wasn't needing, wasn't wanting, and it went about as badly as I expected

Judging by this forum response a majority issue caused by 'updating' an item that, when you consider the current state of issues with actual game-play that still require attention, wasn't a priority but then to introduce a new launcher that clearly wasn't even tested before release seems absurd.

Correct - I still have a different copy of the launcher for each account* as the launcher just wants you to log out of the account and then log in afresh with another. Definately not what I was expecting from this much-vaunted "new launcher".

* some people use an app for this I see
Yes for years now players are using workarounds. And as if it wasn't enough that we don't have a free second cmdr slot, we have to pay game price for a second cmdr, and after years we get a new launcher, and it doesn't AT LEAST have a one click feature to switch cmdrs. JUST WOW..

@sallymorganmoore
The /autorun and /autoquit option do not appear to be working properly from Steam. I run from Steam with the options "/AUTORUN /AUTOQUIT /NOVR". The game auto runs, but the launcher does not show the full launcher page and when you exit from the game the launcher does not auto quit. If you then click on the "Login in with Steam" button, the launcher quits.
Same behaviour here, Maybe as Helmut Grokenberger noticed, because I have 2 keys, Elite and Horizon (bought before 2019).
(Note : I don't use NoVR option but set "Launch Elite" in Steam properties)

About feedback, I would've liked
  • Logo on the left panel (same as in products) instead of right one,
  • "News" as a link to the forums (obviously to advertise forums) on the left
  • Only featured store ads on the right panel ^^
  • Small old fashioned rotating cobra instead of Mikro Microsoft/Apple wait logo or why not a random pink adder, orange cobra, blue conda... for the fun of it.

Greetings Commanders.

As part of a game news round-up at the end of last week, there was a note in there to confirm that a new game launcher will be deployed today for Elite Dangerous.

New Elite Dangerous Launcher launches at 11am BST 24/07/2023
  • At 11am BST today, we will release a new launcher for Elite Dangerous on PC. This will provide Commanders with easy access to all versions of Elite that they own.
  • We do not anticipate any major downtime.
The new launcher will be available for all supported PC game platforms.
  • Steam, Epic and Oculus store fronts will all display a prompted, small update once deployment is complete.
  • Frontier standalone launcher will prompt a 'new version automatic download and install process'.
    • The Frontier standalone launcher may be a little later to provide this process than the Steam, Epic and Oculus store fronts.

Once the launcher is deployed I will notify you here in this thread and open it up for discussion!

PLEASE NOTE:
  • If any critical issue technical support is required on first experience of the new launcher deployment, please submit a customer support ticket at the following link.

Have a great day, Commanders, however see you shortly for the New Launcher adventure.
To Sallymorganmoore :

Watching this thread it should be obvious that this 'new' launcher wasn't the most successful release to date but the reason given in the news round up makes no real sense :

New Elite Dangerous Launcher coming Monday!
  • On Monday July 24th, we are aiming to release a new launcher for Elite Dangerous on PC. This will provide Commanders with easy access to all versions of Elite that they own.
The original menu gave easy access to all installed variants available to the individual, so it can only be surmised that this was a change (cannot say update) for changes sake.
Given the problems even installing this 'new' launcher and the confusion shown as to it's functionality (hiding forum access in a drop down context menu under 'settiings' to name just one) it appears that no testing was undertaken before release.
If feedback is indeed required then :
1) Remove the cheap icon on the launcher and restore the original that is still on the game.exe.
2) Restore the original taskbar that gave 'one-click' access to all functions.
3) Add the 'news' as an additional selection to a new page (similar to the versions button) that would show all news items on one page without requiring scrolling down from a picture.

The only other suggestion I can offer is to ensure any future launcher update is compatible with Windows defender and actually allows a seamless download.

Greetings,

Downloaded the new launcher a few hours ago instead of going with the crowd. It took some time downloading Odyssey files then some more to get all the legacy, arena and training versions. Next create EDLaunch01.exe and EDLaunch02.exe with desktop shortcuts for my bubble and Colonia accounts. All went well on my Windows 7 Pro PC. My Frontier folder is 73Gb as I never really delete aything except log files.

First launcher impressions more fancy pictures and less info plus more clicks to start a game version. Reminds me of the Odyssey launch. Still Sally says the 'live info' and drop down menu isn't working yet so maybe that is where we will get store links, in game info and that spiffy Elite Dangerous manual. :)

Regards

Oh I see what you mean (I just did a check myself) - yes it is a shame that there is an additional button to press (Log in with Steam) - I wonder why that step is felt necessary by FDEV since one is obviously already logged-in to Steam with a linked account? Just more clumsy programming I suppose.

So there is a new launcher, but still cannot switch accounts in an easy way, if i am not mistaken?
Wow.. just wow.
As the game is designed we* have multiple copies of the game each with a single account rather than one copy of the game with multiple accounts so it makes sense that the launcher is designed to reflect that.

*The generic we as I am sure I am not the only long term player with only one copy of the game/account.

My Epic alt really wanted to redownload DirectX9, as others have mentioned. But it worked fine after that. My steam alt wanted to verify my account via an emailed code, again, but after that all good.

The launcher galnet list of articles I will now have to wait for the in game menus. I do not plan to scroll just for the fun of it. That is one part of the launcher change I do not really like.

Where do I specify this?
Make another desktop shortcut for it:

yes, "click the button" step must be absent too, should be done once only.
And it is bugged, with /autorun it shows "click the button" but runs the game. So it is 100% bug.

FWIW, the version mismatch has gone away, and my launcher now shows:

One can only imagine that 1.7.6925.0 was cancelled due to the mess 1.7.6920.0 was. :ROFLMAO:

Has anyone else noticed that, when selecting 'OPTIONS' (after numerous selecting i.e. connected as/settings/options) it says 'Check for game updates, validate game files and more' when actually 'OPTIONS' does none of those as they are actually located under 'MANAGE' which is one click. Just another indication that testing is a naughty word as far as FDev are concerned.
