The latter works, thanks. But, Frontier still sends a verification code to my ex's eail, which is not ideal. I'll have to explore some way of getting the game linked to my own email (but might have a problem there are I already have the three other accounts linked to various email addresses and presumably Frontier won't allow two accounts to share the same email address).

I am slightly boggled by this request as I can’t remember how many years ago I last looked at the official manual but I do remember that it was very out of date even then, but it was certainly well before Carriers were added.
The regularly featured request for the forum link to be more prominent also shows how differently I play as I don’t recall ever using it to open the forums which are on one of the default tabs when I open the browser.
I do agree though that having that link under settings in the way that it is seems an odd design choice.
No, you'll need a separate email account for each commander. I'd try contacting support to see if the email can be changed, they're normally nice and helpful.
I know for a fact that Gmail addresses can have a
User@gmail.com
User+2@gmail.com
User+whatever@gmail.com and all are sent to the first one.
Edit2: it's supposed to be a feature of other providers, too, but haven't tested it.
FWIW I downloaded 3.8. The download was faster than most things (close to 50mb/s, I have fiber that can do 10x that, but nearly every site limits the speed), but the "prep" time was very long. At least 10-15, maybe up to 30 minutes! I stopped checking and don't clearly remember the clock when I checked. But it was over a half hour, but it was over 60% downloaded then, too. So, "doing nothing" seems like it might be the same, but download speed is faster than Steam is most of the time.
Still getting nagged to select my one and only account and deal with an extra button click.
Thanks. Another top tip I just found is that you can use googlemail.com instead of gmail.com. At least in some countries. Two addresses for the price of one!

Sorry. TLDR. Today I opened Steam (first time since April) and downloaded the update with the new launcher.
Odd seems to work fine, but when I try to download Legacy, it just gets stuck at 0% for a long time. Any suggestions?

Turn Windows defender off When using FDEV updater in the launcher... by adding the installed location as an excluded folder...
Windows Defender will freeze access many times untill its done some stupid tests and block the installers...
FWIW, the launcher does now work, just doesn't auto update itself.
I'm sure if I could get the latest version downloaded, it would work fine. I can't, though. The latest version I can download is 6920, not 6926, the one I need. I'm putting in a support ticket to sort it out.
I got mine from the Frontier store. Maybe it needs some time to propagate around the world. Try again a bit later. Btw I'm pretty sure that the launcher from Monday also works to start the game.

Right. I had to download it over mobile data on my cellphone and e-mail it to myself. The update process could do with a little bit of streamlining, I'd say.
As far as propagating around the world is concerned, FDEV are UK-based and so am I. The game wouldn't launch from the Frontier launcher, but it would launch using MiniEdLauncher.

May I suggest you change the http to https, because browsers become skittish otherwise
