Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Rumour over on refunds, based on a tweet, so take with a pinch of salt, but allegedly CIG have outsourced work on the PU to a Chinese company.

The tweeter in question claims this is the scenario:

screenshots taken from a chinese devs PC, why do you think CIG was over in china for 4 days when the bar citizen was only 1 day? All the interior habs, freight elevator work, all the capital ships etc, all have been given to china to do, CIG are focusing on SQ42 fully, no PU.

All pretty much unproveable at the mo. But the principle that CIG might outsource a bunch of Art/Asset work again isn't that far fetched.

Also brings to mind these scurrilous tales of outsourced cinematics ;)

The same possible-dev who shared gossip about SQ42 departures commented on this bit of Agent gossip:

  • an absolutely staggering amount of man hours and monies have been spent on SQ42 cutscenes, with "over a hundred million dollars" spent and a "majority of manpower dedicated to finishing them"
  • while this includes filming, actors and the studio, the biggest portion has been spent in post production
  • a new Chinese firm has begun to help with these scenes, outsourced because Turbulent couldn't "find enough butts to fill seats"

They reckon:

So, from what I know of CR has looked around for 3 shops to help him with cinematics.

I can confirm 2 of them have rejected, not because of insufficient budget, rather due to a stupid scope in terms of unknown delivery.

One of them is a Polish studio and the other from the UK.

From my understanding, the Eastern studio Val mentioned has jumped in to help PURELY on motion graphics related aspects (see the stuff that they presented some time ago that looked cool in game)

They go on to say:

Another serious tidbit of information. Don't be surprised if CR involvement becomes less prevalent and new people come into the front scene purely for protection.

No he won't cash out yet regardless of "suspicious" dividend/share movements, but in my genuine opinion considering the bad rap that SC artists are getting on recruitment to get hired properly if they decide to leave the project, considering they have nothing to show off, I am conscious should it reach the billion dollars funding, there will be a larger outrage from the 3D community which will lead to potential consequences.

Ask anyone around and they will all tell you one thing. Game can come out but current mid and upper management needs out.

Take with your preferred condiment :)

I have multiple accounts - I did the free fly then couldn't access the account on the next free fly so created a new one.

Sounds like there is a pattern here then. CIG deleting or blocking free fly accounts after some time if people don't buy ships. A good way to inflate account numbers.

God there's too many Scooby Doo mysteries to this damn hall of mirrors.

Anyone remember this? ;)

Maybe failing at game development is forcing him back to film-making? ;)

God knows what this is now. Other than yet another shell company…

Although my first thought was definitely: 'Freelancer all over again' ;)

Gemini 42 is an old company of CR's, it might even predate the kickstarter for SC. Its one of the many companies CR has held for years.

EDIT: Looks like this is a new incorporation, so i guess the old company lapsed/was dissolved and they have created a new company with the same name.

Yeah it's on Derek's old list and the wiki. Gemini 42 Productions, LLC (2014-2019).

Bootcha over on SA reckons it was established to film the 'Behind the Scenes' style footage etc. So seems it's just been brought back to life, and moved to the UK.

The use of the term "motion picture" still raises eyebrows though. Even for documentary stuff.

I'm sure there'll be some glossy output from this venture. And some handy tax credits. But I do like this bit of refunds speculation/scepticism:

Wouldn't be a surprise at all. Chrissy seemingly paid himself for the rights use his own IP after all ;)

So all they have to do is convince ~2m of us to do more than just gawp and giggle ;)
With me, they went in the opposite direction: did originally back the project, but once I learned about their shell company shuffle, I decided to get my refund while I still had a chance.

If either of these games actually start resembling something I'd like to play for extended periods, I'll consider repurchasing... once they're available through a Steam Sale. They long ago missed their "Hurry up and take more of my money!" moment.

Frontier made people pay for beta test, too. And it wasn't small change either, rather full price charge for the new releases with very poor excuses.
What was really paid for in those betas, and especially the original one in 2014, was to literally being able to play a bit sooner rather than later. Even with their share of bugs most of those betas were extremely playable and complete, unlike SC. Any gamer will be able to relate to the wish to play something you think you ll like earlier rather than later. Another thing those Elite betas had in common all throughout was an extremely limited beta period and a very clear end, and release date.

All you needed to do if you didn´t want to play the betas was to wait a few months, sometimes even just a mere few weeks, and wait for the reviews to help you take a decision. Not 10+ years.

Totally respect the point of view of someone who thinks those are a rip off anyways though. Although I must say I personally find my Elite Beta Premium access extremely good value for money as it included all paid for extensions.

Exactly what I was asking the other day.

The whole thing is being kept alive by people believing in the dream. If that belief dries up, so does the dream.

Buy an Idris. Buy several!
What's most depressing is that the majority are all talking about how to keep this company pumped up with cash, for what? So they can eventually get the product they paid for that that is MIA, which someone else convinced them to spend so that they could keep this company pumped up with cash, for what? So that person could get the product they paid for that's MIA..... and so on and so on.

Star Citizen is like paying to be a test audience for the Nick Cage Superman movie.
While I understand there's a similar amount (extremely high) of jank in both cases, the movie would be a finished product which is not the case of SC, and I'd certainly pay a movie ticket to see that :) By contrast I did not have the motivation to launch the last 2 patches of SC and see what they look like. Too many really good games at the moment.

They are so similar it's uncanny. Made by self-professed "auteurs" who rarely deliver a competent product after some (overrated) early success, starring talent who have long since forgotten the project even existed.

And neither ever actually released.

Have you noticed how space Vandals were (not) surprisingly similar to the WC movie version of the Kilrathi? On the other hand, out of all the absurdity of the movie, the space bulldozer part is not the most uncanny one. It is what happens right before it. We are in space, FGS, you don't need to approach the carrier at full speed only to crash into it. Just slow down.
