Fall DLC 2023 Speculation

Discussion question I’m curious to hear more about - what are your top 5 animals that you think could work well as Walkthrough Exhibits and that you’d like to see in game?
Forgive me here, as I'm thinking about this in terms of "exhibits" rather than individual animals in some cases...
  1. Budgies. Small and kept in large numbers with lots of color variations. Also pretty perfect for guest interactions.
  2. Macaws and toucans. Color variety. Wouldn't be quite as "busy" as the bats or butterflies but would still be interesting to watch. Enrichment items could be really fun/interesting too. I'd envision this habitat looking like a mix of the sloth and butterflies as far as "theming" goes.
  3. Semi-aquatic birds and 2-3 species of smaller, flighted birds! Pick your biome, but imagine a "mixed-species" woodland habitat with ducks swimming in the water and smaller, flighted birds flitting about. Or a tropical habitat with scarlet ibises and other SA brids. I'm thinking of this as a "river walkway"-style set-up.
  4. Sugar gliders. I'd much prefer them to be habitat animals. But I could see Frontier doing this so... I'm relenting here. They're super adorable and the "flying" animations would be a blast to watch.
  5. Flying foxes. Sure, it's another bat. But these wouldn't fly so much as the existing ones and they're bigger.
There's only one other non-flighted mammal I think I'd want in an exhibit (due to game mechanic restrictions) and I think they're too small and relatively non-social for a WTE... The slow loris.

Honestly if birds ever come to WTE then the possibilities are endless: owls, kookaburras, BoP, doves, etc.

That's probably why they will never add them in the WTE at this point lol
Not breaking any new ground here by saying this but adding exhibits in the current "WTE" style that aren't walk-through could really blow it all wide open and create an extensive range of new and exciting options. Haha.

i would really like more natural forage enrichments (realistic logs with bugs, piles of leaves that animals scrape up to look for food, etc.)
and also i would love sleeping enrichments (hollow logs/trees, little mud wallows, etc)
i would also like natural looking regular feeders/troughs/bowls

So, for something completely different before this becomes unbearable... most wanted (habitat) birds from each continent?
I'm going to pick two:
  • Africa: Grey Crowned Crane, Southern Ground Hornbill
  • North America: Wild Turkey, Wood Duck
  • South America: Scarlet Ibis, Rhea
  • Asia: Mandarin Duck, Golden Pheasant
  • Europe: Mute Swan, Great White Pelican
  • Oceania: Kiwi, Black Swan
  • Antarctica: Rockhopper Penguin, Adélie penguin

Man, Tuesday can’t come any time sooner can it
I know! As curious as I am about the DLC, the update is also really interesting to me this time around. They are getting smaller and smaller over time, but I have really grown to appreciate them. Frontier always happens to wait to talk about a couple features at launch too! 😂

Honestly, I hope that the fall pack will be a suprise rather than the expected Woodlands DLC. Apart from the Tasmanian Devil, imo, there really aren't any other essential temperate animals at this point. Of course we all have our own personal wishes. I really want the Reeve's muntjac. But, assuming birds are out of the picture, primates are hurting the most imo. So I'm hoping the next pack contains a monkey. I know it's HIGHLY unlikely, but my fingers are crossed. 😂

most wanted (habitat) birds from each continent?
Africa: Southern ground hornbill, great white pelican.
Asia: Victoria ground pigeon, Himalayan monal, golden pheasant.
North America: I dunno, the turkey?
South America: Darwin's rhea, American flamingo.
Oceania: Brolga, magpie goose, Cape Barren goose, North Island brown kiwi, little blue penguin.
Europe: Mute swan.
Antarctica: Gentoo penguin.

Right now, as everyone can see, we're running out of ideas 😂. How Monday is close enough, i hope from the bottom of my heart that Frontier will do something completely unexpected from a woodlands or highlands dlc. Idk, something new to the table, something unexpected, like conservation or wetlands were. I really hope to see that. Even a current idea but upgrade it or change it to the good.

Tbh as a European realistic builder there's not too much more I'd really want for the game roster wise.

I'd basically want:
1. European Wisent
2. European Wild Boar
3. European Brown Bear
4. European Wildcat
5. Wolverine
6. Musk Ox
7. Eurasian Otter
8. Eurasian Beaver

That's probably it. Maybe at a push I'd go for the pine marten, European mouflon and the mute swan but I don't think they're totally necessary zoo species. I don't overly see the appeal of adding 50 random extremely niche species if I'm honest. We've got the Eurasian lynx, grey wolf, reindeer, moose, polar bear, grey seal, red fox, arctic fox, red deer, fallow deer, European badger and Alpine ibex already. That combined with the aforementioned handful of other unique species (musk ox, wolverine, wildcat, boar) and European counterparts to NA species we already have (wisent, brown bear, otter, beaver) would complete Europe nicely for me.

I don't really see the need for loads of random things like hares and rabbits and squirrels and hedgehogs and various small waterfowl that are all rare or non-existent in zoos if I'm being honest. Even in a world of limitless roster slots.

I want to feel the surprise and utter unexpectedness I felt when Conservation was first announced. I really do.
I had a dream two nights before that we got the Przewalskis Horse with the new pack (i know, weird thing to dream about). So when I woke up the morning of the reveal I got on Facebook before even getting out of bed and saw the reveal video, i had to pinch myself to be sure I wasn’t asleep 😂

Speaking of temperate, I am building a temperate city zoo ATM and I'm feeling a bit stuck. Has anyone got any cool zoo suggestions that I can look up for inspiration? I use zoo lex and zoo chat for individual habitat inspo but I also like looking at maps and general zoo architecture

There are some great European City zoos that I’m looking at at the moment for my own builds. My biggest influences are:

• ZSL London Zoo (my local zoo)
• Berlin Zoo
• Copenhagen Zoo
• Antwerp Zoo

There are lots of other amazing ones out there, but these four are my top ones for inspiration. They blend lots of older architecture that would have been part of the original zoo with newer, more natural looking builds. This is something unique to city zoos - this way, you can see how they have evolved from when they started to what they look like now!

Thank you, this gives me some great research! So far I have built an entrance, restroom, insectarium, giftshop, foodcourt, info centre, train station, and a siamang habitat lol. I struggle big time making a cohesive zoo plan from the start I usually just put down a bunch of habitats and go from there. I love looking at whole zoos, this is a good list for me to start from! Thank you.
It’s not in Europe, but here are some enclosures from the Bronx zoo that I found pretty inspirational.

And then one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in any zoo
There is some great inspo here! I haven't seen glass aviaries like that before, and I love how close you feel to the water in the sea lion habitat. I like the way the trees are planted in that scenery shot, - are those aviaries to the right of the photo?

That's a pretty sick near habitat, I like that you can see the buildings in the background it definitely adds a sense of place.

all hail the cobra chicken
