Copium is dangerous people...

PS beware suddenly being under water too ;)

Amazes me how Berks can keep smiling and laughing while the game screws him over time and again.

Can a development literate person enlighten me? Is CIG fancying up basic development milestones and goals by rehashing them as 'tech' to make it sound like they invented the wheel, hence the long development cycle?

I haven't a notion about development, but sometimes they are like 'We are currently working on hand held weapon system reloading tech' when describing the reloading of a weapon in game and it just strikes me as odd. Specifically their mention of 'physicalised water' tech or something like that, as if having moving water in a game is a new technology.
Have a little dig into Chris Roberts' history, particularly the clear parallels with Freelancer, where the project had to be rescued by Microsoft, with Roberts moved sideways.

He is not a finisher, he's much more a big-dreams dreamer - and to be clear, we need people like that, just not in charge. It could also be argued that, with their public funding/revenue stream, there is a perverse incentive to  never complete either game.

I'm not saying I'm right, but the evidence seemingly supports. YMMV

Had a chat with the systems architect guy. Their take on the entity mismatch example was:

"Each server is playing it's own game, then the replication server comes along and says "No, the Pico is here, not there". That took 4 seconds in a small scale demo. Imagine how difficult this synchronization is to accomplish for millions of objects across the internet with global-scale network lag, bandwidth limitations and at net code frame rates. I wonder too if the replication server will be a bottleneck in this design."

I suspect that if the areas that individual servers control are sufficiently large, such as a whole planet and surrounding orbit and satellites, or a big chunk of a given system etc (say 3 or 4 servers per system) then all these problems would not be that much of an issue. The problems would become much more obvious in smaller partitions, i.e. big battles or large concentration of players in a smaller area, capital ships etc where the boundaries between servers become very active game zones. And even worst if the partitions become dynamic.

I suspect CIG will definitely try to implement the "large zone" version of static server meshing. That could be feasible. And will stay there for a looooong time. And even that one will probably cause issues when transitioning boundaries.

I don't know what their plan is for meshing - I had thought this thread was the plan https://robertsspaceindustries.com/...m/50259/thread/how-is-server-meshing-possible - then I looked at the dates and it's 2019 - so presumably 'server follows the player(s)' didn't work out in the last four years ...
That would be dynamic server meshing. Clive is discussing the static server meshing as the first step. That is still the plan as far as I am aware. Albeit yeah, extremely late, and showing CIG is indeed struggling even with the static version.

Interesting thread that echoes one of my impressions following the Con and last couple years developments:

Yeah, the absence of Tony Z in particular bothers me a bit. It´s as if CIG could be giving up (at least for now) on the mmo game and settling for just a server based static arena theme park. Like a glorified but very broken collection of War Thunder servers, with little or no player agency on economy, mission generation or real state. The no show of COO Erin Roberts for quite a while also worries me.

More on the Quanta thing:

Last year apparently Chris roberts said Server Meshing was not a pre requisite for Quanta:

Quantum is not dependent on the server mesh as it’s a level above the server mesh

Whereas now Benoît Beausejour seems to be saying exactly the opposite.

The server meshing work also has a very large impact on how the sim communicates with the game state and so have thus prioritized other work in the short term until we can come around and make the simulation affect live gameplay and make a difference like we intended since the beginning.

Excellent list. Could you add Boreium and Tedium? I get them a lot reading "those" Spectrum posts.

Their focus right now seems to be more art assets - from Citcon we had:

  • New clothes
  • New hair
  • New character creation
  • Jump gates
  • New system
  • New clouds
  • Water physics
  • Destructible scenery
  • Tattoos
  • New ships
  • Base building
  • fauna
  • Solar flares
  • new quantum tunnels

I'm trying to think of anything from Citcon related to the economy or gameplay 🤔 Other than minor things like how you interact with buttons / loot items there was nothing for gameplay above 'look at the art assets' - and Quanta is all about providing gameplay, so they probably delayed it? No rush, they have years to get it working (and they don't need it at all for SQ42)

You mean the bottleneck of switching from Stanton to Pyro with a solo ship navigating a JP ?
Or the bottleneck of switching from Microtech to a moon of Microtech in the middle of nowhere during a QT jump ?
What you see in this demo is a lot more advanced than what they need now = no need to track view of other servers object and nobody will stay at the border of each server, only briefly passing it in the middle of nowhere.
There is zero need now for SM to be activated in close combat zone.

What you see in this demo is needed for dynamic server meshing, not the static one.

Sounds like things/packs you could buy without ever having it in game.
{new clouds and water pack=$100}
{new character creation options and accessories=$300}
{ships=$$$} etc.
{game=priceless}

Minor things like the new starmap, the new minimap, the engineer gameplay and the fire gameplay ?
Solar flares are also gameplay, they get you out of quantum and you must seek cover when they occur. They added also antirad medipen but I don't know if they work now.
If the space cows are added, chance that the yeti of MT and the big crab of Pyro will be also and those are aggressives toward you. Chance also that fauna can be lootable with meat or other things to loot on them.
