But what if we could have both?

May I introduce the MVP of cute animals.

I think that there is also a good chance that peccary popped up as an anniversary animal because it was by far the most mentioned “better choice” animal after the Arid pack came out And people were not happy by the mostly African animal choices.
And it was the only one out of those missed opportunities that would be easy to make compared to baboon, secretary bird, roadrunner etc.

Possibly, I know my negative opinion of the arid pack came down to no north american desert representation which the peccary at least helped fill that gap.

I honestly do not get the hyraxes popularity at all.
Like they are an okay addition, but if we talk about small mountain rodent like things, why not directly take one of the two cute ogs from south america with the chinchilla and guinea pig?
All three would fill pretty much the exact same niche of small rock dwelling rodent likes, but 2 of the 3 are from south america and double as domestic animals aswell, with the chinchilla even being endangerd. Theyd pair nicly with the lama both in petting zoos and anden themed areas and would just generally bring more to the game for the same estimated development cost, while also making likly lots more people happy as they are not just pets but also cuter and from SA.

Nah hyrax is just better.
Ever since I saw a three way mixed enclosure of Gelada, Nubian Ibex and Hyraxes I’ve wanted the Hyrax. I mean they’re basically rock hamsters.

The exhibits are certainly big enough to fit them still. Plus, they don't tend to move too much anyway.
I wouldnt wish the curse of an exhibit animal on my worst enemy they are the bane of my existence and I will dedicate my life to protecting the unfortunate animals on the brink of entering the pits of despair being chucked into a corner and being left to rot in sadness frozen in time.
Green iguanas can be longer than the Japanese giant salamander, which reaches around 1.5 meters. I don't see how size would be that much of a problem, the exhibit square is 4x4 meters.
I dont think the iguanas should of been exhibit animals considering the meerkat something half the size of both of those animals is a habitat animal. I have many many many problems with the exhibits they are literally the worst size too big for the small bugs and frog and too small for the iguana and snakes. I just want the salamander to be a habitat animals so amphibians dont feel entirely neglected I would rather not get it at all then get it in an exhibit since there are plenty of other salamanders that wouldnt be a crime to put in those boxes.
To add to that as small fun fact, i, a human, have lived in a one room appartment for 2 years thats smaller then the exhibit.
Adding up my room + kitchen and bath come to just about ~32 m^3, aka half as much as the exhibits.
I rest my case but im sure we can all agree that if a human can reasonably live in half the space of an exhibit they might be a bit large
This is my biggest problem they are the complete wrong size for everything too big for a spider but for the snake it feels small because of the warped perspective of the game and physical size of the animals.

Ive said this before but the iguanas being exhibit animals made sense at the time.
Its just a product of its time.
The size might not be an issue today, but remember that animals that are substantially smaller like the meerkat and prairie dog only got added 1,5-2 years after the game was released.
But the bigger reason is probably the climbing, the "i walk normally but on log" approach of animating climbing in the base game just doesnt work for them. Reason being their sprawling gait which is just more complex to do because you have to basicly make them "hug" the log their climbing on. And this hug also has to change depending on the radius of the object they are climbing on.
All of which apperently still seems like more work than frontier is willing to do even today, given that they didnt add climbing to the water monitor

yeah it is 100% a product of its time even now we cant physically make habitats below 100m2 the game just isnt and wasnt designed for small animals. I agree even if they were to do the iguanas now they either wouldnt of had them climb or had it be unrealistic.
