Winter 2023 DLC Speculation

African spurred tortoise is seriously underrated, I was hoping it would be our free animal :/
I do not like how small the tortoises feel in base game, they are way too tiny.
Imo the spurred tortoise is actually severly overrated. Its just another huge, dull looking tortoise and wouldnt stand out from the other two in any meaningfull way.
I never understood why it is the most wanted tortoise when we could get something why more colorfull and different sized instead. (Edit: actually i do. pretty sure its almost entirely based on zt2 lol)
Would pick radiated, leopard or redfooted over spurred any day of the week

@Narwhaler im hoping when frontier gives us the announcement they drop a tundra pack on us which would hopefully have the Arctic hare. That is if the bird dlc doesn’t happen of course.
That would be nice, altho I actually don't really have a prioritary species to have, I like arctic hares because not only they have various coats, their proportions (or rather fluffiness) make them a good inbetween the scrawnier hares and bunnies, but other species like the mountain hare from Europe would also work perfectly fine. I just hope whatever the species we get it's a good looking one.

Because sulcatas are incredibly common in captivity and are cool af

I beg to differ. The African spurred would be different because it would be in deserts, unlike the other 2 which are found in tropical environments. They do look similar to Aldabra tortoises, but smaller.

Personally, I'd prefer something large than a smaller tortoise. But that's my thinking, and I also see what you mean, as well

I did witness at a local wildlife park about 8 yrs ago a little kid got his finger too close to a African spurred tortoise and got a bite. Tortoise probably thought he was trying to feed him. Very minor a little blood but nothing severe. Pretty big tortoise tho. A pet shop also has one and they let him roam around.

I like spurreds aswell. But in terms of PZ i would very much prefer to get one of the ones ive listed before.
All three have the advantage (imo) of a drasticly different size and look. Especially their size opens up the option for a reasonable indoor tortoise.
And leopard and radiated are also arid species. Plus radiated and red footed would also add a nice filler animal to regions that could use some more variety, being SA and madagascar

Ouch, I've been bitten by a snake-necked turtle before and that was painful enough.

I'd happily take any tortoise at this point. Really wish we had a smaller one.

Not really, both or tortoises are tropical tortoises and spurred would be or first arid chelonian, not only that but is considerably distinct from aldabra and galapagos, while also being better than leopard because of popularity and being more versatile.

Radiated and red footed are cool but they aren't much different from Aldabra and Galapagos whith radiated being basically Aldabra 2.0.

Either way i feel like the community sleeps to hard on the desert tortoise and the Asian forest tortoise. Desert would add a tortoise from NA and deserts overall while Asian forest would add a Asian tortoise, this two plus mediterranean tortoise and the two tortoises we currently have would means a tortoise from every continent and almost all biomes, meaning that you could have a tortoise from every possible situation.

Here they are right here. They only had the big one last I went. It’s about 40 minutes away so I haven’t really had time to go the last couple years. The one tortoise is actually trying to flip his buddy over. Starting to see this behavior more and more. Pretty remarkable really.

@Marvinb yes indeed mixed with the Aldabra. When I went they each had their own enclosure. Only one of the African spurred were there also. It has a lot of neat animals my local zoo doesn’t have. No big carnivores but little cats, canids, and a striped hyena. They also had black wildebeest which were neat to see as they are quite rare in captivity. The name is boulder ridge wildlife park. You can go to their website and access their animal roster. Quite a good animal selection for a medium sized park. They used to keep bison with black buck if they still have them. Need to go back sometime for sure.

If we are getting back into talking about tortoises, I will reiterate my desire for the Indian star tortoise. They are bordereline obscenely beautiful, medium-sized, widely-kept in zoos across several continents and represent both a part of the world that is currently without any species of chelonian (South Asia) and a habitat without any chelonians so far (dry forests, grasslands and semi-desert).

There is another very very important thing.I was even surprised that no one mentioned it.
Take a look at this picture.Throughout Asia and even Southeast Asia. We only have two exhibition animals?????
