Winter 2023 DLC Speculation

5/10. Only because of Wild Donkey, Sand Cat, Oceania, and we did get a sloth but its the wrong species.
2022 -> 9/10 The Grasslands DLC itself I'd give 10/10 :)
2021 -> 9/10 None of the packs were as good as Grasslands but overall the animals even out.
The year everything changed -> 8/10

How has everyone felt about this year? I liked Arid and Oceania but IDK this year was kind of not at all what I wanted...
Honestly I feel like overall I have been treating the packs this year (namely Tropical and Arid) unfairly. On paper they added animals I really wanted, and helped to fill out the rosters in good ways. I think the problem is that for a year or more now a lot of packs have felt more or less the same. Even as they add in animals that are needed, there hasn’t been something to shake up things in a good way. So I think I have been a bit burned out due to that. I love the Somali Wild Ass, but I won’t build that habitat differently than the other equids, other than making the habitat more dry, or making it share with other animals. So that’s just one example, over all I think this year is better than we give credit for. Especially Oceania, I really loved that pack, two birds is what I have been waiting all year for. I still have no birds for South America, Europe, or North America though.

Basically I just hope this next DLC mixes things up. But we will see. I don’t think we will get it but I hope for another bird. I would love some ducks/ waterfowl, but I’ll take anything at this point. I just want to break the two birds per year streak.

I didn't mind the overall packs this year, although it does feel the theme is getting more specialised with lesser known animals being included to satisfy the requests for those animals over everything else. The best thing (imo) is that the scenery packs feel improved with greater attention to Foliage and scenery diversity.

Animals wise, half of them I couldn't care about. The fossa, red river hog, lar gibbon, Tasmanian devil, camel, black rhino and porcupine are the animals I like the inclusion of but the rest are just filler animals for the sake of being in the dlc.

  • Tropical Pack - 7/10. it's mainly due to the sloth that is the VERY wrong species for a zoo game.
  • Arid Animal Pack - 13/10 i'm sorry but Mr. Porcupine made my year, if it didn't had the porcupine then probably 6/10 LOL
  • Oceania - 8.5/10
  • ? - hopefully 13/10.

I feel like with Oceania once they announced the pack no one really wanted the species that much anyomore. Like everyone was clammoring for the devil and the Oceania releases and everyone loves the kiwi and the devil gets no attention
Well, if PZ wiki has something to say about animals popularity then Devil page is always least trending out of all Oceania Pack animals.

And, if you look at pack itself then it wasnt even chosen as pack mascot or something. It was just there. Kinda speak how relevant meta-wishlist is as a measure of popularity. Top 1 for so long with people not being able to wait for it, but in the end animal itself had no impact.

I loved this year. The animal artwork has just gotten better and better, its honestly outstanding now. I also enjoyed the surprises of the DLC themes/animal picks.

HIGHS:
  • Red River Hog
  • Fossa
  • Sloth
  • Somali Wild Ass
  • Black Rhinosceros
  • Porcupine
  • Oceania island map
  • Oceania scenery pieces
  • Quokka (yup sorry!)
  • Little blue penguin
  • Kiwi
  • All of the foliage
  • Flexicolour thatch
  • Viewing domes
  • Staff uniform choices
  • Peccary

LOWS:
  • No true monkeys in Tropical
  • No lorikeets in Oceania
  • No flying birds in general and distinct lack of monkeys
  • Oceania map doesn't have sea inside the map boundary for boat entrances
  • Climbing mechanic still needs an update
  • No working playgrounds for kids yet
  • Not enough food/shops variety
I'm hoping most of the lows get addressed in 2024.

It was okay. Arid and Oceania were nice. Tropical, yeah, just Not my pack
I feel the same! Arid and Oceania were just nice. I'd probably really like Oceania though if it was an animal pack or something.
If we get the Pallas Cat, I will build them a whole zoo and flood the franchise market with cute, grumpy 100% stats kittens!
This time it's really a pain to wait for an announcement x(
Tell me your Franchise name and I will give you all my CCs for perfect kitten! I only have 13,000 ish and that is because of the anniversary challenge I was trying to get as many cool animal gifts as I could haha.

I had honestly moments of "let this game end with dignity, please."
It just felt like not so much love and care was put into the DLCs anymore or the updates. It felt more like "lets quickly throw out one highly requested animal and a few fillers to make the last bit of profit."
Especially the updates felt like Frontier was already planning on giving up on the game. Not the Devs fault, we all know by now they can only do what the management allows them to do.
IF they will continue to release DLCs for PZ next year, things really need to pick up again. It can not go on like this year forever. Otherwise I'd rather have a "one animal a month" approach and they put actual effort in that animal, than having lackluster updates and pack filler animals.
Now, I sound very negative now, but that doesn't mean I did not have my fair share of animals I highly wanted. And as I said often, I was really spoiled before, having not much high wishes left. Still, this year felt very shallow.

In the meantime I also saw yesterdays share holder thingie and if the console version they plan to release really is PZ (which is likely) I also doubt ongoing DLC support for PZ. Unless they approach the one animal a month suggestion.

In a world where I could wish for everything, PZ would speed up again next year. In this reality, I'd rather have it end support (and concentrate on PZ2) on a high note (if that is still possible) than "enduring" (exaggerating here) another year like this year.

Low of this year:
No new canids. AND I don't mean necessarily we need another species. Most would say we definitely don't. I just mean even a single new colormorph would be nice. I mean, there are still dog lovers out there! And, we have been neglected this year.
Another Low is like @Swjosdotschka said, it feels like they have just been adding requested animals. With really random oddball (Asian Water Monitor). Rather than thinking about which animals go well in a theme. Another reason I like Oceania the most probably is because those animals fit the Oceanian Theme.

The Sloth that is much rarer kept in captivity and those three antilopes in the arid pack basically shout at me when I think of "which animals go well in a theme".

I really want Coastal maps for most biome/continents!
For our wonderful community here, I'll trade them for almost nothing. 🤝 No need to spend all your CC's!
Thank you! Now, I really want Pallas' cats to be in next DLC. :) I already did since they are, IMO one of the cutest animals (grumpy but adorable) and they are a good alternative to Sand Cat.

I cannot really understand your Statement. Even if you did not get the animals you wanted to get there is no doubt about the quality we got delivered in my opinion. Animals Look Beter and better with such an eye of Detail. We got the Porcupine people thought could be Impossible. They went Back to the Orang Utan to let it brachiate. And I think this is a difficult and Not really appreciated Thing to give such a mechanic to a Base Game animal. We got a Lot of Community favourites. And in case of the Updates. What is the expectation? Updates get smaller over time. That is Just a normal Thing. Really, such a comment Like " Let this Game end with dinity" I cannot understand. You must Not Like the rooster. That is totally okay. But I really do not See quick and dirty work.

Favorites because everyone couldn't think of what they wanted so they just jumped on bandwagons. IMO. I feel like content earlier was better because people made wishlists that were truly their own.
Most of the animals high on the Wishlist WE got were already high (If you put away the animals we already got because this obviously leads to lower places compared to today or time of integraton) long ago.
