Or for that matter, do we know they even understand the concept of a spoken language, or even familes and children as a concept or even the concept of innocence and guilt?Do we KNOW they understand our language?
This one, I can say (something). The Codex tells us from old INRA research that the Thargoids occasionally vocally communicate with what I remember described as hissing, chittering(or something?) and similar noises, be that at each other or at humans. Something which we can’t just understand like that, evidently.Or for that matter, do we know they even understand the concept of a spoken language
T. James’s Out of the Darkness strongly implies they can understand these concepts at an intellectual level (though probably not emotional). Then again, it is not really clear how much of that novel is considered canon by FDev.Or for that matter, do we know they even understand the concept of a spoken language, or even familes and children as a concept or even the concept of innocence and guilt?

There is a clip of a movie and I really can't remember what it was. The government wanted to communicate with aliens. Some army guy is asking a scientist woman how they should go about it.T. The Elite Dangerous novels were written to be canon for Dangerous. So far there is still little to suggest that has changed - not that it really matters for this topic, anyway. I don't think answers about if the Thargoids understand language would change anyone's approach.elite dangerous canon is only what is in elite dangerous

She breaks it way down to the most basic level. He wanted to know how to ask them a question. She explained that it would take a long time. First, they'd have to determine if the aliens even understand the concept of what a question is.
I really don't know. I actually saw it as a clip from someone discussing the subject. He also talked about a story where humans were force mutated. Some became gazelle like animals with human brains. Forever knowing what they once were but could not do anything they used to do as humans.Arrival?
Don’t know about Braben, but Michael Brookes did reply to someone asking whether the evens of Out of the Darkness are canon — in his trademark style, kinda-sorta-implying “yes”.I have seen something say this novel was endorsed by Braben himself(though I didn't further check myself to see where that originated - so take with a large grain of salt)
So Ram Tah claims, based on what Guardians allegedly wrote in their logs, which may be just war propaganda ("Look, honest, we didn't start the war, we tried to talk but the alien scum did not listen! Kill'em all!") or Guardians themselves grossly overestimated their understanding of Thargoid language and just spoke gibberish.anyway, we know the Guardians figured out how to speak with the Thargoid
I don't think the Guardian logs contain enough detail to be lies, to be honest. What little there is is probably just saying that the Thargoids aren't interested in negotiating over their territory (like us) which checks out. But that's boring and unsurprising so in the years since it became a story about how the Thargoids will attack no matter what.So Ram Tah claims, based on what Guardians allegedly wrote in their logs, which may be just war propaganda ("Look, honest, we didn't start the war, we tried to talk but the alien scum did not listen! Ram Tah and others did put some spin on it...
How do the linked update notes connect to that? Was that a mistake or am I missing something?the Ram red herring Tah logs*? i wouldnt be surprised if the spin would be a whirlpool...

Hmm. That's an odd description, and weird for it to come in this way. I guess it could refer to the mission itself being misinterpreted, at a stretch, but it's written as if Tah himself is a red herring. Weird.
sshhh! or the kumo photoshop wizards will hear youTah himself is a red herring
