DLC18 discussion and predictions

I know I'm in the minority, but monkeys are among my least favorite animals and I'm horrible at building for climbing animals. A monkey animal pack I would be almost as disappointed as some people were with the barnyard pack... A tropical or SA animal pack could use like 3-4 monkeys but also leave the other 3-4 spots for other animals...
Also about pigs I am tired of them but I'm not going to say none are welcome because as a canid fan I understand how swine lovers would feel if I said "no more pigs." I mean idk if there are pig lovers to that extant but still...
The only taxonomy pack I'd welcome would be class Aves because it could be called feathered animal pack or something...

Complete opposite here :D.
Monkeys are my favorite group of mammals and i think they are one of the most fun to build for

While I would be ok with an Americas pack, we would miss out on the Baboon and Secretary Bird or really any African bird, which is a deal breaker for me. Then again I said the same about a petting zoo pack and I came around to it so -
I'm okay with the Americas pack idea as well. My main issue there though is I really want a Spectacled Bear so much more than the ABB, but the ABB is pretty unquestionably the high profile North American mammal not in the game.
This is where I land on most pack ideas at this point. There's all sorts of fun options remaining. But with the last pack very likely to be the last... It's more about my top picks than what makes a "good pack."

If we were guaranteed two more packs, I actually think an Americas pack would be great. But all things considered... I don't want to miss out on the tree kangaroo. Haha.

I think the fact that it is a niche genre is what is saving planet zoo if someone wants to play a 3d zoo game they have no major alternatives that arent 20 years old even if you just consider how limited zoo games in general are planet zoo has a huge advantage.
I keep hoping we'll get a whiff of some other company developing a similar game (a la PK) with some of the things that Planet Zoo is missing. But yeah, they've got the market cornered for now.

It was around 3,000 earlier, so I think it's more that the count hasn't quite finished yet for the day (it'll be conclusive once the next shows up).
Aren't there also still some issues with Franchise and the animal market too? I feel like that's got to be impacting the numbers to an extent.

and I'm horrible at building for climbing animals
This is one of the reasons why I want the baboon, because it’s not really a climbing animal. They more so stay on the ground and graze through the grass and vegetation. Both of the baboon enclosures I’ve seen haven’t had baboons climbing, just on the ground or on a rocky ledge. The second we get the baboon I’m making a rocky canyon enclosure, I can already picture it in my head 😆

I’m not saying I’m bad at building for climbing animals, I just find it tiring to make cool climbing frames and fences that need to be high enough.
Might be a hot take but i dont think we need both the hamadryas and gelada.
Need? No, but if both were added I think they both would still be really beneficial and give variety to players choosing an African primate - after all they both look completely different, and one is from lush mountains and the other is from more Savanna drylands.

Yeah no i agree. Just meant if they were going to add two more african monkeys having them be the baboon and gelada wouldnt be ideal imo.
Would much rather have one of them and something like the guereza, grivet or something like that

it went down from there for me
Me too... Grasslands was the peak of the game IMO.

I think both are equally beneficial too.
Africa needs a climbing monkey like the guereza, a baboon while nice is just a slightly better mandrill.
Those have beautiful fur/hair.

Actually yeah
1. Hamadryas baboon (desert-scrublands-african savanah)
2. Howler monkey (grasslands-wetlands-subtropical woodlands)
3. Spider monkey (LATAM tropical rainforests)
4. Golden snub nosed monkey (mountain-taiga)
5. Lion tailed Macaque (Indian savannah)
6. Mantled guereza (african tropical rainforest)
7. Crabs eating Macaque (coastal mangroves) or Bárbary Macaque (temperate woodlands)
8. WTE: tamarins and marmosets
Thank you for adding lion tailed macaque. They would be more mountain tropical forests biome though.

I would only change number 7 for a unique, large, ground monkey like Patas monkey which would greatly represent vervet monkeys that are now not existent in the game and quite popular in zoo collections.

Other than that your pack idea is pure perfection.

I completely understand that for sure, also trying to balance out what the community seems to want along with personal wants, as well as where there's a near or complete lack of certain types of animals for regions. Fortunately those top wants do coincide sometimes.

For instance, just looking at the very top line picks:
Africa:
Personal want: Secretary Bird
Community want: Secretary Bird
Most lacking; Monkeys (we have 2 African birds and 1 African monkey, but it's certainly a close race here)
Most iconic missing; Nile Crocodile (at least IMO)

North America:
Personal Want: American Black Bear
Community Want: Muskox (since the Walrus has dropped somewhat)
Most lacking: Birds in general
Most iconic missing: American Black Bear

South America:
Personal Want: Spectacled Bear (I want that more specifically than any specific primate)
Community Want: Howler Monkey (Coati is VERY close though)
Most lacking: New World Primates and Birds pretty much tie here. We don't have any New World Birds but there's also not been as much of a ruckus of not having them as we had have over having only one New World Primate.
Most iconic missing: New World Primate - either Howler or Spider Monkey.

Oceania:
Personal Want: Tree Kangaroo
Community Want: Tree Kangaroo
Most lacking: For once not birds, there isn't really too much of a specific type of animal missing here.
Most iconic missing: Thinking the Echidna over the Tree Kangaroo even though the TK seems more popular

Asia: (not taking into account the Cobra since it's an exhibit suggestion and it's hard to comparatively balance the exhibit list with the habitat list)
Personal Want: Markhor
Community Want: Markhor
Most lacking: Asian Antelopes
Most iconic missing: that's a tough one actually.

Europe:
Personal Want: Eurasian Otter
Community Want: The Eurasian Brown Bear maybe:
Most lacking: Birds
Most iconic missing: probably the EBB again?

I realize I left some spots out but my thought is that if an animal is picked from a continent and matches to 2 of the 4 notations, it's a good choice.

Ok since were making monkey packs:

-Hamadryas: Its the most common and more interesting looking imo of the baboons. Baboons are one of the monkey archetypes that should really be in game
-Mantled Guereza: Africa needs alteast one small more typical monkey. In an ideal world id want one tropical and one for the savannahs, but due to place constraints i chose the guereza, since if they keep it on a species level it does inhabit both tropical and grassland regions.
-Grey Langur: India is also desperately missing a monkey. I chose this one over the macaque because it has a way bigger range and lives a wide array of habitats from grasslands, cities and jungles up into the himalayas, so its the more versatile of the two.
-Crab Eating Macaque: SEA should also get a monkey thats readily kept imo and i chose this one for its huge range and because its pretty distinct from the rest
-Howler monkey: Obviously Latin america is missing a monkey the most, this is the most requested one
-Spider monkey: Probably the most fun, but also probably the trickiest to make
-Squirrel Monkey: Nice, colorfull and common small monkey for SA
-Golden lion tamarin: If we stick to the regular format the has to be an exhibit animal and tamarins and marmosets are the best fit. Another option would be to go the barnyard route and ditch the exhibit and add some pieces instead. In that case id make the tamarin a habitat animal and switch it in for the squirrel monkey, or if its to small to proberly work as a habitat animal drop it.

Honestly this is super hard, and even tho it would add 8 additional monkeys i find myself struggleing to make a perfect (for me) roster.
There are still quite a few that i would be sad didnt make it like the white faced saki, lion tailed macaque, grivet and patas monkey

My hypothetical monkey pack:
1. Hamadryas baboon
2. Mantled guereza
3. White-faced saki
4. Geoffroy's spider monkey
5. Guianan squirrel monkey
6. Golden lion tamarin
7. Lion-tailed macaque
Exhibit animal swapped for new climbing frames and a full mesh set.
Oh that's a good idea about the scenery. A natural climbing with dead logs and branches, leaves to play with and sleep in, and new enrichment. And the mesh set is perfect idea.

Hey just so you all know we are definitely not getting walrus. But keep on forcing it to the weirdest, nonsensical pack ideas ever. I need a good laugh.
